Cops sure suck at providing a calming influnce. Rather funny the cop thought pepper spray was going to calm the child down. They all need training on how to deal with people.

The pepper spray was obviously not used to calm but to subdue or to prohibit further violent action.

Just another way of saying the same thing, and just as obvious it does not work.

it looks like the kid calmed down enough after the fact to handcuff. So it did do the job it was intended for.

it is entirely possible the girl had been abused in a similar situation with an authority figure restraining her. Nobody has considered that as a reason for her reaction.

Stop making fucking excuses for this girl.

did he punch her after she bit him? she was overreacting before that point though

He very much appears to punch her after she bit him, then he pepper sprays her. They both appear to have overreacted. It's disturbing, because it once again shows that the police are as short tempered as the people they are arresting. What happened to professionalism?

And actually, my first question is, why is this girl being handcuffed for violating a city ordinance? Why not just chuck her in the back of the cruiser and drive her whiny ass home?

lol look who shows up to criticize the cop. so is the cop a racist too?

The cop is twice her size, unless he is a wuss, he could have easily overpowered her and forcefully put her hand behind her back. I think he was just trying to be cautious about it, probably too cautious, buty you can tell he made every effort to be in front of the camera so everyone can see her behavior.

If you were looking at the same video but they were off camera and all you could hear was the girl crying, you'd have a much different perspective/reaction to the vid. After she bit him, he could have just used more force, but he went to the pepper spray instead. Don't think it really matters anyway, he was in the right.

Yes, he could have easily overpowered her and broken her arm

Seemed to have worked fine. After spraying, the girl was not able to bite again and was less resistant. Also, subduing someone does not equate to calming someone.

It did work, actually. Did you watch the same video as the rest of us? After the pepper spray she stopped resisting and he was able to cuff her... that didn't stop her bitching though.

I can't help but  at those who say "well, I've been on a ridealong, so I know blahblahblah"...

ah great, didn't know she was black. Did anyone posted about that? Has the shit storm of idiots like Sharpton/Jackson spoken out on this tragedy? Have her idiot parents defended her biting as an accident yet?

Why was she resisting? Whats the point in doing that, did she think she was going to do 10 years in jail for breaking curfew? I'll never understand why a rational person would do that and then complain when force is used to restrain them. People are idiots.

Thank you coppers for taking care of scum like that. Worth every penny of my tax $$.

Not your neighbor hood. My neighborhood is relatively safe with a very low crime rate. Though there seems to be a lot of mischief at night which includes vandalism and street fights amonst adolescents. So they had to enact a curfew.

If one of my kids snuck out at night or went out after school and never came back home, I would thank the Cop for a job well done for keeping them safe. I would also be very pissed if my daughter attacked a Cop.

It would be better to have cops taking care of real criminals, but that was amusing. It takes a lot of something to bite a cop.

One thing that gets me is that people don't realize how hard it is to successfully restrain a kid without hurting them, especially when they are fighting. I have worked with kids who have major emotional and behavioral problems all coupled with violent physical tendencies. No matter how small they are and how big you are, it takes ALOT of effort and caution to restrain a kid without hurting them. You could just "force" it and use pure strength, but you would probably end up breaking something or hurting them.

The cop mentions the fact that he doesn't want to hurt her because she is so small. He could have very well just slammed her down and then forced her much more harshly. I think the cop acted fine.

Using the pepper spray after hitting her probably wasn't professional, but that girl had it coming to her and she definitely deserved it.

I'm gonna be short tempered with any person that attacks me. I don't know about you, but I won't let some person start attacking me and not doing anything.
