The xB certainly impresses me as a distinctly Japanese design (of course I don't know much about design), and I'm glad to see it doing so well here. Frankly I didn't think Americans were open-minded enough for it to be a success. This is the definition of polarizing design. People will probably either love the xB or hate it. Personally, I find it intriguing.
If you truly believe that people will buy anything Toyota decides to sell, well, doesn't that say as much about how well they've done here? I'm not one to argue that the general public is anything but stupid, however in this case I think it's more that people realize that unusual isn't necessarily bad. After all, Toyota is so often criticised (and rightly so) for bland design, so it seems a bit odd for them to be also criticised for something truly interesting.

If the only argument you have against the xB is that it's ugly, please STFu![]()

But it is a valid argument isn't it?
to mark the car off because of something so subjective only proves that you are the stupid one

But it's a subjective one, so it's not really an argument to begin with. The car is priced dirt cheap, has more standard features than it's competitors, great on gas mileage, comfortable and well designed, has tonnes of useful space, and toyota reliability - to mark the car off because of something so subjective only proves that you are the stupid one.

xB and Element: Honda and Toyota decided to have an ugliness competition, and Toyota won.
Besides ugliness, one of the biggest problems with the box design is the terrible drag coefficient. It doesn't matter much in city driving, but they HAD to give those cars really weak engines to keep any sort of gas mileage on the highway. Also, I bet the gas mileage starts to decrease really sharply north of 65 MPH.

They have a 108HP engine b/c they are based on the Toyota Echo, DUH! It's a platform thing. The reason why it gets good gas mileage is b/c it's lightweight and has a frugal engine.
A Scion xB is rated at 30 mpg / 34 mpg
An Element is rated at 21 mpg / 26 mpg
Please edumacate yourself before you start spouting off B$

The REASON why the xB and xA use the 1.5 liter 108HP engine is b/c BOTH are based on the Toyota Echo platform, hence they use the same engine. It's cheaper for Toyota to use common componentry and a larger won't even fit into a chassis that small. In fact, a larger engine is not even needed given the weight of the vehicle.

I think he is just saying that since it is a box, teh drag will effect the gas mileage on the highway, which is true. However, since like NSF4, alot, and i hate disagreeing with him....I am just gonna give NSF4 pat on the back.

I understand exactly what he is saying, but the reason why the xB uses the engine it uses is not to get better gas mileage, it's a fuction of the platform it's based on.

That's the unladen weight. These vehicles are being marketed as something where you can cram anything in the back and go...and having weight back there will really slow the car down with only 108 HP. My point is that if it's designed to be a commuter car, they can give it a better aerodynamic profile and save gas, and if it's designed to be a hauler, they need a bigger engine.
I know that Toyota uses common components, I LIKE Toyotas, but as an engineer I like nice aerodynamic profiles.
Toyota is all about efficiency, and I hate to see such a crude design needlessly bleeding off energy.
