My biggest complaint about being in the northeast (Connecticut in my case) was the exorbitant cost of energy!

There is no one solution for everybody.
Later hours may work for some and I would guarantee that just as many would be unhappy with it.

Just because I have a different opinion does not mean that I am wrong.

My kids used to have to get up at 6:00am when in Kentucky to make the 6:50 bus pick up. To get adequate sleep they needed to get in bed by 7:30. That sucked ass. We often didn't get home from work until 5:30-6:00pm. Somewhere in that 90 minutes we had to shove in dinner, homework and a couple activities a couple times a week. It was fucking awful.

Moving to Portland and having classes start at 8:30 and my kids not having to get up until 7:30 is just such a massive quality of life change. They can stay up to 9pm. We have time to eat as a family. There's time for family time at night. It's not a massive rush.

It's just objectively better in almost every part of my life. It's just better than "go to bed earlier". Especially with it being daylight until 9pm. Nobody wants to go to bed in daylight.

That is good for you. I don't get this part: In bed at 07:30 PM and get up at 06:00 AM? 10 hours in the bed. 😳

Now how about other parents that don't have the luxury of going to work later in the morning and have to be on the job at 06:00 - 7:00 AM.

I moved to Groton in 1980 to work in the EB shipyard as a DOD subcontractor. The Milestone nuke plant at Waterford was billed as cheap electric energy before I got there, and a lot of people converted and some got rid of their oil fired furnaces. Well, that was like a number one subject when I arrived there. People bitching about the not cheap nuke power.

Thanks I'm fine here in South Carolina where my Military retirement, Company Pension and Social Security are not taxed by the state.

Military retirement is taxable in Massachusetts.

You did, it was actually in response to @MrSquished's comment about old people complaining that younger people don't go through the same stupid bullshit they had to. I do find it interesting how strong of a reaction to all this you've had though, you're like half the replies in the thread. Feeling ok? We're here if you need to talk.

MrSquished was responding to my comment but anyway. Meh.

I am only conversing with people bringing up their own points of view and commenting on my post. Should I just ignore them?

Sure I have a different opinion and as I stated above no solution is good for everyone.

I have noticed that nobody has seen to address the issue of parents that have to be at work earlier and their children depend on them for a ride to school.

Maybe they should start taxing military retirement in SC if your shitty state can't even afford school buses for all kids.

What do they do when school ends? Average school day is about 6-7 hrs. Most people work 8+ hrs.

I wasn't specifically talking about South Carolina in this topic.

I'm generally talking about younger children and people in rural areas. Everybody don't live in the suburbs or in the city. Do you think walking / riding a bike 10 miles to get to school is a good idea. Or having young elementary school students walk or ride a bike a long distance would be a good idea?

I know you are looking at this through your little tunnel vision for your specific comfort zone.

Which brings up another benefit of later starts. Prime time for kids to get into trouble is between when schools get out and parents get home.
