Computer science teacher left, long story, but he's gone now. This is a high school AP course. They offer 3 years of programming classes, usually 90% drop out after first year. They also offer a Cisco network certification class.

A substitute was hired for these last 8 or so weeks of school and knows very little about computer science but administration says he has a good understanding  (class is about learning java, he doesn't know how to compile)

They're asking the 2nd and 3rd year students to teach all the 1st year students. We don't get any credit, participation grade, etc.

Why should I do the teacher's job of teaching? I have NO incentive at all!

I'm doubting I could get anything on my transcript for helping out when they're in need...

Have any reccomendations on what I should do?

look at it as a learning experience, or just flat out refuse to do it.

I could see that, but I feel the administration is being lazy so they just ask us to do it!

It's not your problem they can't hire a teacher...

Oh, somehow that gave me an idea, a parking pass would be nice!

Wouldn't this take time out of your schedule? You should at least receive units. But i think it would be a good experience.

Yeah, if you think of it as an internship, it would be great on a resume.

I would consider looking into -some- sort of compensation, whether that be monetary or some sort of credits. You might be able to arrange a sort of "internship" credit through a local college or something. Would they simply hire a sub to "manage" the classroom while you guys taught the classes? Is it a once or twice thing or do they expect you to take over a major % of the curriculum?

And transcript or no, you could still put it on your resume. It's being honest after all. May or may not do you a hill of beans in college, but could be worth it in the real world.

:p

That was my idea too. Worst case senario... employer calls school, school denies student teaching class due to regulations or some crap, employer writes you off as a liar, you end up jobless.

Yeah, at least get -some- sort of certificate, offical write up or something.

I really appreciate all the posts so far, it's changed my view on this!

I doubt a public high school would pay, however I like the idea of being able to put this down for a resume or something similar. We would just be teaching the content in the classes. Basically, if the program "works" and compiles without errors, automatic A since the sub is grading them

I'm a TA first and second period; the teacher is honest and admits that I know more than she does, and it works well that way. It's an odd mesh of AP-CS, non-AP CS, and standard web design in that lab first period, the AP kids are basically practicing for their exam, the non-AP CS kids are working on code and are, thankfully, very self-sufficient, and the web kids are... A total pain in both our asses. I don't mind teaching them some stuff, and I edit the lessons and speak for the smart kids who provide answers on the tests/quizzes that ARE correct, but don't mesh with the curriculum. We decided that because of the RIDICULOUS difference in skill level, the class would be completely self-guided. We hand them checklists of stuff to do before a certain date, they do it. Seems to work out VERY well, kids LOVE it, and actually WORK instead of spending their time on boreme.com.

As for the AP comp sci stuff, our teacher is a CS graduate from 1995. Java didn't exist then. She taught C++ for the longest time, and is very good with the theoretical stuff and amazing at spotting logic errors, but couldn't code her way out of a paper bag with Java.

I'd NEVER do it by myself, though, because some of these kids are asshats.

They'll happily call you an assistant or aide, but a teacher? Not gonna happen :p

Well if you really know the material, what's the problem? Or are you afraid you will suck and/or expose your ignorance?
