School suspends teacher for reading Ender's Game in class

Why do you hate kids? Why do you want to go against something that protects our children? Want to buy a pin for the cause? Only a dollar...

Having solved all other education related issues, a school in South Carolina suspends a teacher for reading Ender's Game in class because it was pornographic.

WTF.

No. Seriously. W.T.F.

If you want to argue that Ender's Game is a bit too violent, I can buy that. But pornographic? I've read this book many times. And it's in no way pornographic.

Following the updates, it appears the school is upholding the suspension for failing to go through the review process for exposing students to unapproved sources. God bless the policy princesses and their pointy little heads. Next up, the risk management losers will recommend they fire her.

Honestly, considering the parent filed a police report against the teacher for spreading pornographic material I think the issue was pornography and that the school board does not want to appear to be harboring a teacher who spreads pornography.

There is plenty of material that gets passed around in schools that hasn't gone through any review process. They are using this "unapproved materials" as an excuse. At most something like that should get a warning to the teacher and a mark on his employment records.

I would actively try to get my 14 year old kid placed in a class where Ender's Game was being read. Partly because it's awesome, and partly because I would have made my kid read it by the time he/she was 10, thereby assuring an A on the report 🙂

Now, I read the book quite some time ago, and I remember violence, but I don't recall any sex at all.

I do not fucking understand the mentality of schools/parents.

Kids get exposed to all kinds of things, hell they even get exposed to death pretty often. This is what happens in life. What next? Not allowing children to play outside.. as it may cause skin cancer in the future? 🙄

I don't believe it's about not following the review process either. I also don't believe it's about pornography. It's about personalities. Either the teacher has some agenda or the Principal does, maybe both. Policy is just the convenient excuse.

Read the article, he was reading pornographic material off the internet and some idiot parent claimed it was from this book.

Although in regard to Ender's Game, it was one of the few books that I read in high school that I actually enjoyed. Albeit, I don't really like to read that much.

I got a laugh out of this update in the link in the OP..
According to a news report by local station WRDW, the police incident report in the case claims that the teacher read “pornographic material from the Internet to the students in class. One of the stories was about prostitutes having their faces covered with ejaculation.” But according to the WRDW report, the school is still maintaining that the offending material was just three books that the teacher read to class, which were primarily offensive due to swear words. (Thanks to AJRimmer for pointing us to this.)

:sneaky:

LOLAmerica.

LOLNewZealand

That liberal fucker Ender saved the Spider Queens. Just a really bad example for kids.

Haha. An here I was getting mad at the liberals for not allowing the works of a devout Christian to be read in school. You do know that Orson Scott Card is a Mormon right? I guess that counts as Christian. Oh who the fuck cares really. It's a good book. Kids should read it.

So which actually was it, what he read above or Ender's Game? If it was what he read above (which it would be the talk of the school and everyone would know about it before the bell rang) then yeah he needs to be fired. If it was Ender's Game, we need to get the AT Effect in full force on this school to let them know what the rest of the country thinks about the administrative decisions in their bumkin school.

Oh, well graphic violence and torture usually gets more of a free pass. If someone's showing skin though, that's clearly more destructive and dangerous.

And to try to make any sense of that, I'm going to go jam a few metal spikes into my brain, then hook them up to a 3-phase power line and see if that helps. I have a feeling that, even after my brain's been brought to a boil and every last cell there has died, it still won't make any sense.

On a related note, reading kids a story about me baking my own brains with line voltage would probably get a free ride. But if I didn't have on any pants, that would get someone fired.

Yeah, no telling what actually is going on here.

Considering the school is saying its just 3 books, my guess is a parent is either making shit up or else they overheard their child heard this at school and somehow is thinking the teacher did it. That sounds like something some junior high boys would pass around or read to each other or something. Maybe the kid is trying to keep from getting in trouble and so said the teacher did it.
