So its ok for him and anyone else to approve of it but not dissaprove? That means its ok to approve of religion in schools and basically any other highly controversial debate but not disaprove them ...otherwise its just hypocritical BS. let the boy have his free speech as long as he does so with common sense
Where do you draw the free speech line? What if he wore a t-shirt that said "Homosexuality Is Wrong" to school?

Bigotry against bigots is bigotry. But we are coming off an age that still exists in many parts of the world where being homosexual can not just get you suspended, it can get you killed. In a world where we can see death as the aim of homophones it's not so easy for those who are threatened to have compassion for those whom, if they took control of government and popular opinion, could lead to the situation we see in the other parts of the world and saw in Nazi Germany. Just look how most Americans felt during the Iranian hostage crisis watching march after march there with those chants, "Death to America". It always helps, in my opinion, to remember when looking at this fool of a teacher that we have similar buttons that can be pushed that make us just the same.

How about we start searching for the line when the school brings up the subject matter?

Right because that is exactly what this kid was doing. Bullying another kid. Read the article, the school teacher brought up the subject and he offerend his own opinion to a friend.

He was building an environment of hate. Might as well scatter bottles of pills, razor blades and nooses around the school if you're going to allow that.

What if he drove to school dragging a gay person behind his truck?
First, 14-y-o's can't legally drive. 2nd, tying and dragging a gay or straight person behind their vehicle is illegal. 3rd, violating another person's right to express your "speech" isn't protected.

Then other people are free to get angry. But who is he damaging?

Are we not to allow shirts in school that say, "X is wrong" on the basis that it offends Xists?

I wonder if the kid said it in German? Meaning, connotation and, context are all different between languages. What ruffled the teacher's feathers might have been along those lines. Much like the differences between "American" and English.

That teacher should be fired immediately, because the incident shows that he's the kind of dipshit that doesn't believe in people's rights to have an opinion other than his own. That kind of thinking should not be conveyed to the next generation, just like I don't want some fundie teacher telling the class that homosexuality is a sin and they're going to hell or some crap like that.

This is yet another example of PC run amok.

You are kidding me with this crap right?

Hehe, does it matter. Only the issues he raises are important, how you react and feel about them. We see 50 million dead as a result of Nazism. In the US you can be a Nazi but any association with Nazism in Germany is against the law. No free speech there. 50 million people dead teach different folk different lessons. Truth and what it looks like depend on personal experience. Black folk are wound a lot tighter about racism than they are about homophobia. Grow up gay among straight bigots before you judge Nebor. Fucking over people can make them violently angry.

If the incident went down like described, then the teacher and the administration are idiots. I would to know sometime if what actually happened is confirmed sometime in the future.

I hate to believe that both could so stupid, but I've been disappointed before by people that should know better.

Why did so many of you feel it mattered that you disapprove of homosexuality?

Is it relevant to the debate or discussion?

I'm sure where you work you are free to voice your dissatisfaction over gays...

If it's a public school then the first amendment applies

see
Tinker v. Des Moines

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinker_v._Des_Moines_Independent_Community_School_District

The Court held that in order for school officials to justify censoring speech, they "must be able to show that [their] action was caused by something more than a mere desire to avoid the discomfort and unpleasantness that always accompany an unpopular viewpoint," allowing schools to forbid conduct that would "materially and substantially interfere with the requirements of appropriate discipline in the operation of the school

Evidently you can at this school, as long as it's hate for evangelical Christians. A tee shirt with an anti-gay slogan would be different; offering an opinion is different from breaking decorum with a sociopolitical message.

Incidentally my ninth grade Spanish teacher was gay and never brought in into the classroom, except to tell an amusing story about being in England and having a man ask him to borrow a i love you (cigarette.) Sexual orientation in general should not be brought up in non-related classes.

If you and other gay activist have problem, take it up with Catholic church and other religious entity and make it illegal to teach their followers anti-gay message.

This kid is just telling his friend what he was taught. Seems like you people are too chicken $hit to take up the big boys and only picking on the little guys.

Whether I agree with either side or not doesn't matter to me.

What I see here is a kid excersizing his right to practice ignorantly blissful youthful indiscretion and a teacher practicing his right to be scared shitless of allowing that kind of comment in class and being sued for it.

Of course it matters. The person who has the same opinion is clearly right, regardless of whatever it is they did.

While the teacher seems to have acted stupidly and I don't support it,(if this story's depiction is correct) the right to free speech is pretty severely restricted in the school setting.

So really, there hasn't been much of anything like free speech in schools for quite awhile now.
