I'm in a similar situation. I too have avoided consoles for quite some time, but not for a specific reason, just that the newer systems haven't appealed to me until recently. I'm now seriously considering buying a PS3 to play GT5, NCAA Football (I don't even care which years, I just love college football), Madden & of course, for another BR player.

My gaming hours are spent on BF2 on the PC, so I don't need a console for FPS games.

not true.

there are many reports of people who keep it in a ewell ventilated system having issues with FF13.

I am one. my PS3 is in the open. i keep the vents clean and it is in a cool place. for some reason FF freezes up on me. I have had NO other game or movie do it.

The same story comes out in the forums every time a big new game comes out. My PS3 has frozen a couple times, but with no particular game or circumstance. FF13 never froze on me. Consistency shows a particular issue, inconsistency proves nothing.

It was much worse with the 360 before people realized what the issue was. Instantly people blame the games even though the games themselves didn't cause the issue. People ALWAYS blame the game. Your <electronic device> never had a problem before <media> because everything works correctly before it has a problem.

Really, every time a big new game comes out? FF13 is the only game that I have seen in recent years were people are claiming it is breaking their systems.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I have a launch day 60gig, and have played all these "PS3 killer games" and have had absolutely no problems at all.

Anyways, just keep an eye out for a deal once GT5 is releasd, you wont be dissapointed especially since PS3 is so versatile as far as a HTPC and BluRay player.

Buy an used Slim...best bang for the buck right now if you can't afford a new slim. Heck, just buy a new slim. Its worth it, you never know what people put their things through unless you live with them. I deeply hate ebay and CL because you don't know who you're dealing with, and if the console goes boom because they treated shitly, you're gonna be doing the towel oven fix several times. You can buy it used and risk sending it to Sony to fix it for $180 dollars, or you can buy it new, have warranty for a year, and know the console will be treated (properly?). Trust me, i know people that just treat their things like crap and then go sell em on ebay, reap a profit and screw the person that buys it. Just buy it new...you won't regret it. If treated right, SONY's products are the BEST THING ON EARTH. My PS1, which i bought in 1997. is still in perfect working condition(P.s. Its 2010), my PS2, which i bought in 2004, still in working condition. Hell, my original PS1 controller still works. It's about how you treat it, and if you treat it properly. Never buy used unless you KNOW you won't regret wasting your money if it breaks. I have already pre-ordered GT5 and KZ3 from gamestop, i can't wait til they are both released. Also, Pre'd AC: Brotherhood.

Cheers :)

If anyone here plays Bad Company 2, hit me up with a PM and we can play together.

Launch PS3 here, zero problems.

Don't feel strange for wanting GT5 as your main PS3 title. It'll end up being the biggest PS3 game in total sales when all is said and done. It's the most popular sim racing franchise of all time.

I say bite the bullet and get a PS3 Slim. Some of the older Phat models have a fan that kicks in a bit when it gets too warm. It's not X360 loud by any means, but if you can afford to not deal with it I say go for it.

As mentioned above, I don't like dealing with consoles on Craigslist because there are always people out there trying to scam you or sell you a unit with issues. The PS3 slims aren't that bad price wise and the hardware is a generation ahead with better cooling, so less risk of problems down the road, plus you get the warranty if something does break. Buying from craigslist might get you a unit with intermittent issues, or an account that was banned, etc..

There are many things that I find reasonable to buy used - such as the games themselves, skateboards, and girls.

Console hardware is not one of them. Too many people trying to pawn off a system that's been giving them issues, or they just want to sell a failed experiment to you (mod chip install, etc.). I will always buy a system new, unless the price of a used one is so low that it's a no-brainer.

well do a search on FF13 and freezing. hell there is even a class action lawsuit over it. its not just 1 or 2 people its many.

Also many say the same thing i am. the PS3 is getting a lot of air flow, they do not have any problems with any other game but FF13.

shrug i'm not talking out my ass. FF13 has issues with PS3's (and reports of it on some XBOX's). its not just the fat ones or old ones or new ones.

you can buy girls? hmmcan you get one to cook and clean?

anyway i agree. Console hardware is not something to buy used. unless you know the person you are buying from and the system.

I also want to get another PS3. I bought one a while back, but my son ended up needing surgery and I needed money, so I had to sell one of my systems. I sold the PS3 because I used the Xbox more, since all my friends and brothers own 360's. I have played some of the games, Uncharted 1 and 2 and Killzone were great IMO, but Resistence 2 was very bland. I will get one, but when I do it will be a new slim, even is the PS3's are more reliable than the 360's, I am on my fourth, I always buy consoles new.

Thats what im talking about!

Well, you guys are definitely making me think twice about a used PS3. About the cheapest ive found is 180-200$, which for that price I might as well just buy a new one.

Back story:
2 years ago I was avidly against consoles. Thought I would never buy one. Last summer I bought an Xbox 360 to play with some friends. Now im thinking about getting a PS3 as well.

Questions:
Am I crazy to buy a PS3 essentially for 1 game? Racing is what interests me, and GT5 is obviously a BIG deal. Am i crazy to buy a PS3 primarily for this (and possibly a few other games)?

What do I need to look for in a used/refurb PS3?
Storage size?
Should I buy used, new, or wait a while longer?

Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks!

I just got a PS3 last month, ostensibly for the BluRay player and the occasional game. The story is that it is a very good BR player and is likely to be kept current with updates. I looked a various cheap players through Woot and the like and saw that they generally were not getting firmware updates. After the fiasco with my HDA35 HD HDDVD player locking up on just about every movie (have about 10), wife approval factor is pretty low, so I needed a sure thing. Amex points converted to Dell gift certificate (you get double value that way) and 10% off sale at Dell means I got the player + 2 games (Ratchet & Clank: Future whatever and Uncharted 2 (very good so far)) for $21 out of pocket.

Ok, so at Costco I saw a DualShock controller + GT5:prologue for $55. I planned on waiting for GT5 this fall, but I have to say that I am head over heals for GT5:prologue and am seriously thinking of getting a wheel and pedals set.

I have never been a great fan of driving games, but in the last few years I have become a Top Gear junkie and even got into Formula 1 last year as well as local events at Mid Ohio.

I have always said that as long as Nintendo releases Metroid and Zelda games I'll buy their consoles (handhelds are another story). I can tell you that if you are into racing simulation (not arcade style) then you are actually going to get a PS3 for TWO games. GT5:prologue today (run, do not walk) and GT5 (Full release) this fall.

All that said, I think that it helps to have a HDTV for this game.

For anyone interested, I am about 80% done with the "B" class events. "C" class was pretty tough for me as a racing sim noob, but after a lot of practice I got 1st in most races and had moved to manual transmission, TC and other driving aids off and really upped my times. Especially in the Cappuccino. Who would know that you should short-shift that thing? Anyways, I still need some of the auto controls for the Ferrari 430. Definitely need to practice with the Lotus - how the hell can I oversteer out of control at Daytona?!?

So much fun :)

I want to get into GT5 when it releases. But I will only do it if I get a G27. I'm very tempted. :D

Same here but I buy so much shit that I barely play. Forza 3 is a great game and I love playing it in theory but I never actually play it - and I even have the wheel.

There's no way I could play GT5 without a wheel but I'm sure it would not get enough use if I did buy one. I'm conflicted.

I'll probably end up buying it and after a week it'll be a dust collector.

Exactly what I'm thinking of waiting for. Though the thing that drives me towards the G27 is the 6-speed without the sequential shifter...as in the G25 had a mode where you didn't have to use the H-pattern and people said the shifter was floppy because of it. I think the last wheel they made for GT didn't even have a clutch pedal though. :hmm:

Ok this may be a dumb question but I've always wanted to learn to drive stick / manual... would a fancy wheel / setup for a racing game like this help with that?

I wonder if there is anything behind the story on IGN about Sony adding a charge for all used games, like EA does. I can't link it because they block IGN from my work, but it was on there yesterday. If that is true, it will deter me from buying a PS3 since all I want to do is get used games for it.

Learn on a real car. Definitely

This is why I'm hesitant to buy a wheel. As a poor college student, im not sure I would use the wheel enough to justify the cost. The only reason im buying a PS3 is because ive got $250 saved up in Paypal from random crap, that I can use for the PS3.

I got an xbox 360 to play gears of war 2 with friends, and now own a big ol library of games for it after getting used to the fps mechanics with dual analog which was really unusual at first.
