just as the left would if put in the same position.

Unlikely. Dems didn't give Reagan this level of crap. Or Dubya. They utterly pale in comparison to the GoP when it comes to obstructionism. Too bad really. If things like the Iraq War and Scalia are any indication, Dems should probably obstruct more.

Come back bozak. I was just kidding about the Kennedy thing. It was really a black ops done by Obama's dad to make it look like saint Reagan did that.

RIP Justice Scalia.

I didn't agree with a lot of his decisions, I'll leave it at that. He was still a person that had a family, so I'm sorry he passed and I wish his family comfort.

I'll start another thread to discuss the SCOTUS nomination because I don't think that this thread is the place.
This. RIP Justice Scalia.

Well.. I'm just going to go ahead and address the 500 lb gorilla in the room - now that a Supreme Court Justice seat is up for sale to the highest corporate bidder, how will this impact the current election?

My guess is the next president will likely have 2 judges to place on the Supreme Court. Since these are lifetime appointments and could mean decades of influence.... I don't see how it won't impact the election.

Agreed. They will keep whatever number of people they need present to prevent a recess appointment.

I'd kinda like to see him make a recess appointment of...himself. Obama drops the mic in the Oval office, puts on his robe and sunglasses, and walks over to SCOTUS.

that shit would be hilarious.

Seriously: someone extend that gif of him kicking down the door after the speech, then walking directly into SCOTUS, wearing a photo-shopped robe, and he sits down at the bench with a big fat grin. 😀

haha, I don't see that happening, buuuuuut since the Republicans are already posturing to delay the nomination until the next president takes office and Hillary has already stated she'd be open to nominating Obama for a seat on the Supreme Court

The number of Republican heads that would explode would set a record.

It will never happen that way, of course, but it amusing to think about.

Holy crap, the chatter the next several months will be...well, pathetic, really. :\

still, some lulz will be had.

I still can't get over the irony that Scalia was on a hunting trip bent on killing God's creatures under the name of "sport", as if Scalia's fat ass needed that food from the kill.
And the irony that everyone right wing so truly believed Ginsberg would be the first justice to die off, and here it was Scalia biting the dust.
Oh God knows what God is doing. This isn't just some fluke.
And God said, "Thou shall not kill any of my creatures for sport, or I'll squash you like a bug". Amen! 😉

He wasn't all one thing.

Obama can and should nominate a permanent replacement. There is no valid argument for leaving the Supreme Court short a justice for over a year. Republicans will try really hard to come up with reasons why we should wait until next January, but we all know the real reason is that they don't want the makeup of the court to change.

It will be interesting to see all the excuses they trot out though.

Do you honestly think it would be any different if the roles were reversed between the Dems and Repubs?

I don't.

Cole is a former Republican...lol! Speaking of him, here's an interesting post regarding Scalia from Adam Silverman over at John's site, Balloon Juice (I'm an old timer there).

I like this last bit:

Associate Justice Scalia’s most enduring legacy may be that his death today prevented the Supreme Court from deciding at least eight major cases in line with his judicial philosophy and ideology. And that is significant.

I feel the need to say this and I mean this with every bit of my heart and every fiber of my being.

You may feel it and mean it but you don't get to post it here.

9 months isn't anywhere close to the record for being without a justice. Obama could use this as an opportunity to not do something blatantly partisan and self serving, but I doubt it. Next president will probably choose Ginsberg's replacement, Breyer not far behind.
