you do NOT need that software if you are running XP...
IF your running 2000 you just need the PPPoE software...nothing else.

Everyone beware. There is no 30 trial period. I just spoke with them, and if you sign for a year, your in for a year unless they can't service your line for some reason.
So, if your unhappy with the service, your just screwed.

Beware, after one year, they begin charging your regular price for their services, bringing your bill up to $50/month.

There may be no trial period, but I remember reading in the fine print that you've got 30 days to accept the license agreement. If you don't agree, it seems you can cancel everything without an early termination fee.

Is there any maximum upload or download limit with SBC? Can I hook up multiple pc's with one connection using 2 different modems on each pc? I ask this because I have a spare dsl modem and have phone jacks galore in my house.

If you could find that, it would be great. However I asked the rep, and she put me on hold to check. She said once your in, your in.

This is the clause that I was referring to:
"IMPORTANT NOTICE: The installation materials provided through the self-installation kit or by the service technician will contain the Terms of Service for SBC Yahoo! DSL. You should review these Terms of Service before installation by clicking on the Terms of Service icon below or by visiting http://sbc.yahoo.com/terms/. You will need to accept these Terms of Service in order to use the DSL Internet service and continue with the installation process. If you decline to accept the Terms of Service, you will need to call 1-877-SBC-DSL5 to cancel the service within 30 days after service activation to avoid service charges and installation fees."
Since the termination fee is agreed to within the contract, I would think they'd have a hard time trying to get you to pay it if you cancel the service based on the notion that you don't agree to the contract.
There is also this clause in the contract:
"If the Service cannot be provided at the lowest synch rate in the range, either you or SBC may disconnect the Service without a termination charge to you."
So at least you can canel without a penalty if the performance is poor.

Anybody know if I can renew my contract with SBC for one more year at $30. I sighned up one year ago for the 768 plan for $30 dollars. It was faster then dial up but at only 80 KB donload max compared to 300+ cable in college it was quite slow. Cable is now available in my area now but slower then in college and my SBC contract will expire soon. I can upgrade to the 1500 for the same price now but it will go to $50 in a few weeks so it is not worth it over cheeper cable. But if I gan one more year at $30 for 1500 and keep my email I would be happy.
Thanks

Does anyone know how they activate it? Is it like cable where they turn it on at where they are, or do they actually need to physically do something at my apartment? For that matter, how does cable activate? do they jsut tell their DNS server to lease my modem an IP? How is DSL different fromt that?

????? I've been using DSL for two years now. Nearly every router supports PPPoE. You just put in your username and password in the setup screen, plug your DSL modem into the WAN port, your PC into a switch port, and off you go.Originally posted by: sat4funYou must be a cable user. Please advise how I can connect to DSL without the connection manager or by using the instructions posted by aperry?Originally posted by: FritzoHeck with software...just head over to the Belkin thread and pick up a cheap router. 🙂Originally posted by: aperry A few things here from my past experiences (I had SBC Yahoo DSL and moved to an area where it is not available yet):Even with all this said, $29.95 is a good price, and if it were available at my house, I would probably do it. Cox charges me $39.95 per month, plus I have to have their minimum package ($15.95 plus tax) which I do not even use, so I am paying nearly $60 a month for cable-modem access... :disgust:
- If you are running XP, you do not need their glut of software that loads. Just go to here for instructions.
- If you are not running XP, you need to use their software to install (I think). Then, delete all of the extraneous garbage except for DSL Connection Manager.
- If you are a Usenet junkie like me, and want to use your own reader to read Usenet, their server blows. They are missing many groups. They claim that the reason for this is that they don't carry groups that appear to be duplicates. They will add a group for you if you ask (and can convince them that it has unique content), but I found it to be severely lacking.
- If you already have a Yahoo mail account (this includes @rocketmail.com and others too), DO NOT combine your accounts. If you do, and later drop SBC Yahoo, you will have to pay a monthly access charge to read your previously free email account. I believe the charge is $9.95 per month.

I did upgrade to 1.5 down and it should go in effect in a few days. But since my price will go to $50 very soon the 1500 doesn't look to good compared to options like cable. One more year at $30 would be good though.
