SB: overclock OR gpu. Pick only one.

So with P67 & H67 we can overclock *OR* have the GPU. One or the other. And no gpu = no quicksync either.

No Z68, which gives both, until Q2. Annoying.

I wonder if someone will be able to find a way to wake up the gpu even with a P67.

Erm, overclocking is really only for the enthusiast crowd, all of whom are gonna be running GTX4xx/HD58xx or better anyway. The on-die GPU is gonna be utterly ignored by the 5% or less of people that even know what overclocking is. The on-die GPU is there for the masses to be able to play farmville and watch netflix on, for which the value of overclocking is approximately zero.
 
And, whilst we're at it, only the K varient cpu has the better gpu engine, which won't ever be used, leaving the crappy one for those who will use it.

Way to go Intel.
 
Im waiting for socket R (2011) for my desktop anyway. But I found jarreds laptop review very positive. And I will probably get a good sandybridge laptop in 2-3 months.
 
im willing to be that the vast majority of enthusiasts don't care about transcoding speed

I know a fair few who do I don't so much but offloading decoding? that'd be really nice I regularly watch HD video while running games..offloading that cpu usage (which can get quite a bit) so that it's free for the game would be rather nice >_<

Still definitely planning on getting a sandy bridge but really wish quicksync would work on the high end systems too 🙁
 
watching things while playing games is totally different then actually transcoding them

if you are actually transdocing video while playing games then well i find that pretty strange
 
Love the OC capability, love QuickSync, however, thanks to Intel's failed design, I can't have both apparently. That is really stupid.
 
I guess I'm one of the "in-betweeners." I don't game but I do want to overclock primarily for video editing and other computer intensive apps. The GPU in SB is absolutely fine for me but the lack of overclocking is not.

Now I have to decide.. overclocking or integrated gpu? Right now, after just reading Anand's review I'm thinking I'll just to with a cheaper H67board, not have to deal with a graphics card and live with the SB cpu at stock frequency.

There ALWAYS seems to be a problem with these releases. I mean this is great and all but it would have been perfect if we could have had overclocking on the "H" boards, 23.xx frame rate, and native USB 3.0 right now.

Oh well it's still gonna be a huge upgrade from my old C2D.

Since I'm a Linux user and I'm always on bleeding edge Linux projects (testing custom rc kernels, developement versions of xorg/mesa/de's) Intel IGP is a must have for me, opensource support for AMD/nVIDIA is flaky at best and proprietary drivers are released always against stable versions of projects I've mentioned before.

So I can live without O/C, I'm upgrading from C2D laptop and this will be a huge performance upgrade for me. I know that by disabling CPU multiplier change and locking DDR3 at 1333MHz is going to secure non-K SB sale, but c'mon...

I am also in your shoes. For $20 I'd like to have the option to OC especially since its so easy, just change the multiplier. What I think I've decided is the following....since the SB graphics 3000 is equivalent to only the lowest discrete card these days (5450).....I will spend $50-75 and get a discrete card like a 5570 or 5670 or GT240, then I will get a P67 board. It appears all the H67 boards have some sort of drawback in terms of functionality.
 
Haven't heard if that one's going to fix the problem that the IGP has to be active and the *only* GP in your system for QS to work.

No it works. Read the PCWatch's review. It says there's no restrictions and can run either depending on need and BIOS settings. Plus it says you can even do multi-monitor along with the IGP. I thought they would only leave it for mobile.
 
Since the IGP seems to overclock well, what I'd like to see (but unlikely) is some notebook manufacturer allow IGP overclocking.

Hmmm wonder if there will ever be a software IGP overclocking utility? Right now sounds as if it is done in BIOS/UEFI.

That is the most ridiculous thing about it IMO. The "K" parts that are for overclockers (Read: Need P67 board) are the chips with a faster gpu. Yet the P67's don't utilize the integrated graphics? Huh?

Is intel really trying to market the K chip to both the P67 crowd and the H67 crowd with this strategy?

It's my biggest gripe with SB, and i'll be holding off until I see what AMD brings to the table because of it.

I'm an overclocker and I want to use Quicksync,.... does intel really not want my money? We saw how crappy CUDA acclerated transcoding looks so those of us with nVidia really need Quicksync as a viable alternative.

I'm confused as to why a user interested in a P67 is locked out of quicksync when they are the user who would likely be very interested in it's capabilities.
 
If IGP + overclocking is what you want, then wait for motherboards with the Z68 chipset.

Ya, true. And SSD caching sounds interesting, but i'm confused on it's implementation. If it is going to give 2 drives a single drive letter to achieve it's goal,... that leaves me with lots of questions on implemenation.
