This is absolutely insane. Asshole or not, our justice system is supposed to be about justice.

Exactly, everyone is just judging on emotions. They don't like him, well fvck him. Like him or not, he still has rights just like the rest of us.

I know an officer that keeps large paper bags with him on patrol in case a perp spits on him. He pulls over, puts the big ass grocery bag on his head and keeps driving him to jail. Pretty funny to think about really. Most police supply places sell "spit hoods" or masks for perps that spit. If the guy was bleeding at the mouth and knew he had HIV/AIDS, I could maybe see a life sentence, but this seems harsh and I'm a cop.

Only going to endanger police officers. If some guy is facing life for spitting, there is no telling what he will do.
I know what I would do if someone was trying to put me away for life for spitting. One of us wouldn't be at the trial.

He's a wife beater, and he then assaults officers.

He's too stupid to be allowed outside a prison.

I can't stand people that think like this. People like you are why the prisons are overflowing. You probably don't care about the prisoners being beaten, raped, or killed either. I think you should spend one day in prison. I bet your opinion would change then.

Simply put, he should have faced assault charges for BOTH incidents, but should not have received Life for spitting(unless it caused the Police officer to contract a disease). He may be a piece of sh!t, but he still is receiving punishment for an absurd law that is written too broadly. The life punishment should only apply if the person had intent to force a disease upon someone, or the officer did contract something. Other than that it should be assault on an officer and his wife, and he should receive time for both. Life? Absurd abuse of power by our courts.

the sentence is ridicilous. he is alleged of beating his wife..not convicted. he is convicted of raping and burgarly but he did the time. how would you feel that you got pissed one day and cops came over to your house and you spit on them at a moments rage and the next thing you know your in prison for life. The people who should be in prison for life are serial killers and violent murders and crimes. I couldnt even see spitting a 30 day prison term. just goes to show how fvcked up US justice system is (especially the jurors...your telling me not one of the jurors thought life in prison was quite harsh for SPITTING ON A COP..who the hell are these people and do they have brains?? just a thought)

I say this probably falls under the category of cruel and unusual punishment. Now if it'd been a 5 year sentance I could jive with it considering his history. Hell, 10 years. Spitting is pretty gross.

I do also think the law should be on the books. If some HIV+ transexual prostitute gets in a scuffle with a cop, bloodies her mouth and then spits in his eye that's just as bad as killing him right then and there if he gets AIDS. It should count as murder or attempted murder.

FYI, in same states, if not all (perhaps its federal law by now) knowingly spreading a disease like that IS punishable.

most of the time i am an avid defender of most sentences and police actions. This one IS too harsh, even for me. However, there should still be a punishment for spitting on the cop, as we dont want open season on the police.

In addition to the life term, Marquez received one year in jail and a $3,000 fine for his conviction for domestic assault and a $500 fine for resisting a peace officer.

Source

Says convicted of domestic assault there. Makes the 1year vs life difference even more glaring if he was convicted of the former.

That was like so two minutes ago...

Teach the guy a little more respect for the police, and get him out of society all at once.

Bah, this is total crap. More tax money being spent on someone who shouldn't be locked up for life. Yes, he's scum, yes it's stupid to spit on an officer and yes, wife beating is horrible. But putting him in prison for life is a waste of time clogging up appeals courts and wasting tax dollars.

Our legal system is arguably the best in the world, and yet so fvcked up.

The time spent sitting him in an appeals court arguing whether he needs to serve for life for spitting on an officer is time that coule be better spent on more important, higher priority matters than some law that makes absolutely no sense.

So, you're saying we should just execute him now and be done with it?

He is saying the LIFE SENTENCE was BS.

I am sick and tired of people being sent to prison for ridiculous amounts of time. Our prisons
are overcrowded because we make them overcrowded. Lots of tax dollars could be saved
but the system is sooo corrupt and unfair its a lost cause.

This guy is scum.. but life is totally ridiculous anyway you want to look at it.
