Saw Superman Last night - no spoilers

I saw it this afternoon and was pretty pleased with it. I like a lot of the throwbacks they did to the old comic and movies; I especially loved how they played on the original Superman movie theme for the score.

In a sense Kevin Spacey was really the heart of the movie; he was just too perfect.

It was flatout awesome. I really like this new Superman, he just fits. Truly the stage is set for some terrific sequels. I just loved it, totally. It got out the gate real slow, but was picture perfect afterwards.

I liked it. I give it 3 out of 4 stars. But I'm a big-time fan of Superman, and saw "Superman The Movie" and "Superman II" many times each.

Before you see this movie, you MUST watch Superman 1 and 2. Then you'll understand why certain things in the new movie were done the way they were.

First, the pros:
1. Musical score - basically the same John Williams theme from the original 1970's - 1980's movies. IMHO, these themes were perfect for Superman, and I am very glad that the new movie used them.
2. Homage to the original movies. From the opening credits that used the same word style, (although jazzed up with great CGI scenes of other planets/stars), to the choice of continuing the Superman story pretty much where it left off (although I refuse to consider Superman 3 and 4 as part of the Superman storyline), Singer once again shows his respect for well-established mythos.
3. Mostly excellent special effects.
4. Updated the "old" Superman - after all, it's been 25 years since the first movie.
5. Straightforward plot - too many times we've seen Hollywood screw up a great concept (e.g. The Incredible Hulk) by tinkering too much with the basics.
6. It really kind of sets the stage for a sequel. Kind of like the pilot did for the new Battlestar Galactica.
7. It's SUPERMAN!

Cons:
1. Straightforward plot - Yeah, I listed this as a pro too. But although I liked the plot, many ATOT'ers whined about it, so I'm listing it here.
2. Dialogue - there just was not a lot of it, and the plot didn't really demand it, but I felt that Superman spent an awful lot of time just standing there looking pretty.

Batman Begins was a great movie. I thought Christian Bale was a much better Batman than Michael Keaton because he seemed so much more aggressive and intense. Keaton was just too soft.

The new Superman looks decent. The actor who plays Superman looks a lot like Christopher Reeve...it's scary almost.

I liked X3 as well. It wasn't as good as the first two movies but it did have some entertaining parts.

Saw Superman this morning, and I enjoyed it. Batman Begins was a better movie IMO, but it fits with the Batman character as Superman Returns fit with the Superman character better.

There were only two things that really irked me. 1) They removed the 'American Way' from the things Superman stands for; 'Truth, Justice, and the American way.' 2) When Lois is getting tossed around the airplane cabin like a rag doll, she walks away without so much as a bruise or scratch. Riiiiight.

Special effects were among the best I've ever seen though.

Batman Begins > Sin City > Spiderman 1> Xmen 2 > Spiderman 2> Superman >> Xmen 1 > Xmen 3

Superman was a good movie in that the producer paid adequate homage to the originals, and the acting was decent. I think one of the reasons it didn't resonate that well was the fact that there weren't really any surprises (completely predictable plot), and no adrenaline charged moments like X2. One thing that made Batman easier to work with is that he's just a dark, mysterious, anc cool character to work with, so its easy just depicting the mundane life of Bruce Wayne as interesting. Clark, on the otherhand, didn't have much development in the story as a character, as he was never a really deep character to begin with.

I saw it tonight and liked it. I haven't read the comics or seen the first two movies, but I still enjoyed it. I didn't dig the intro, I found that way to long, they over-did the words whizzing by. A few times, sure. A dozen, I guess so. A couple dozen times ... c'mooonnnnn!! Seemed like the into was a way to use up their budget, I didn't find it impressive. I also thought Superman looked "plasticy" in the CG shots, when he wasn't in the shots they looked good, but many times I found myself saying to myself "that just doesn't look right."

I guess I was one of the few who enjoyed the lack of climax and lack of a pretty bow at the end. It was different, and I couldn't call everything, which was a welcome surprise. Sure Superman would save the day, but it was without the all but obligatory epic battle.

And yes they need to tone down the "creepy stalker" vibe of Superman a bit, all I kept thinking was "MySpace freak"

I saw it tonight. It kept me entertained. A little boring during some parts. It dragged on too far beyond a perfect ending spot. I agree that you should see the others first, but the gaps slowly fill in enough so that it isn't a problem. It's definitely a feel-good movie. The worst part of this movie is the idiots talking on their cell phone and with each other. Seems to be a plague in this town. In keeping with the spirit of this thread:

Batman Begins ~> Superman Returns > *Xmen >> *spideman

If you ranked Batman Begins over X3, I'm going to have to throw out your review.

I think that's about what everyone thinks...so you better not listen to anyone.

SPOILERS

Batman Begins was awesome, and was heavily character driven which I really enjoyed. So much rich back story that you have to love if you like batman. There are some faults though:
1) Batman voice sucks, only thing that hurts bale as batman. In every other way I liked him as batman more then even keaton.
2) Action scenes filmed in shake-o-vision. Please stop this hollywood, for the love of god. I can't see anything thats going on...they might as well just cut to black and play a bunch of punching sound effects and then cut to batman standing over a bunch of knocked out bad guys.
3) Katie Holmes character pretty much totally unnecessary.

X3 was just awful. It used special effects as a crutch and leaned all its weight on it. The characters were all...OUT of character. (Professor X losing his temper, magneto abandoning mystique at the drop of a hat, and using his fellow beloved mutants as fodder...not to mention him suddenly becoming retarded and failing to anticipate plastic weapons.) There was virtually no backstory and the new mutants they introduced/played more prominant roles weren't developed AT ALL. Beast was barely in it and collosus showed up only long enough in ANY scene to toss wolverine. Did that poor bastard even have any lines? They put a larger focus on storm, a boring ass character played by a crappy actress. Kittie Pryde was the only character that was sort of cool that even got enough screen time to notice her.

The movie tried to rely entirely on action and managed to botch even that. The bridge moving scene made little sense at all because a suspension bridge would have collapse when moved like that. The 'army' of mutants way as well have been a bunch of humans with halloween masks on for all that they did. Ugh. The movie was even more disappointing because the first two had been so good.

SPOILERS. don't read if you haven't watched

what i don't get is:

if the kid was indeed superman's - that would mean that lois became pregnant immediately after superman left, and gave birth no more than 9 months afterwards. So for Richard to be anywhere near convinced that the child is is, she would have had to run directly to him to have sex, which would make her a tramp. Which would make her completely unlikable.

Either that, or she gave birth, raised the child for a few years, and crackhead Richard was retarded enough to be convinced that he somehow telepathically fertilized her egg a few years before they had met. In which case he's the dumbest sh!t ever to grace the Daily Planet.

Dunno 🙁

I read that they removed Perry White's line of Superman "defending truth, justice and the American way" was removed from the film to make it more foreigner friendly. That line is a staple in the Superman series. What a crock!

Hasn't that line become kind of an oxymoron though? 😛

I have to agree with everyone else on superman. It was meh. About what I expected. It wasn't horrible, but it had virtually no effect on me.

SPOILER:

The only thing was that was cool was supermans kid...but it wasn't even developed much so its still meh.

Plus, I still say its way to easy to find some kryptonite.

I thought it was ok. Better than X3, about equal to X2. I saw it in IMAX 3d which is a big rip off. Many of the 3d scenes where technically inaccurate (i.e. foreground stuff looked like it was in double vision). I left the theater with a huge headache from the 3d. The only good 3disms were people.

When I left the theater I was disappointed, but it has grown on me a bit. Routh (sp?) does not do a good clark kent but he was definitely a good superman. The action scenes were really the only good part of this film. The dialogue was really terrible and all the little superman in-jokes were borderline vomit-inducing.

Still, if you want a good popcorn flick, this is a decent choice.

They removed the American Way? That probably deserves a P&N topic all on it's own. 😛

Even ignoring the P&N implications....couldn't they have come up with something better than, "Truth, Justice, and all that other stuff"?

That's just lame.

Spoilers

I thought they met after Lois had the child.

What I couldn't get was how did Superman get to Krypton? Spaceship? Is that the thing that crashed? It looked like an asteroid. like he hitched a ride on an asteroid. Because he can't fly there. Once he leaves Earth's solarsystem he loses his powers from the Sun.

The movie for the most part was enjoyable, but too many dull intervals killed it for me. Brandon Routh did a great job as Kent, Kevin Spacey of course was terrific... but the movie just didn't keep me interested.

Batman Begins > Superman Returns > X-Men III

+1

Looks like he flew to krypton - pretty weird though because isn't it supposedly in another galaxy - pretty hard to make it there in 5 years. Was it stated that superman can only absorb power from our sun? how about there yellow stars? Maybe he hitched a ride back because he ran out of energy..
