Saw a new 2010 Ford Taurus SHO driving today

Was driving home on I-94 today when I noticed a brand spanking new 2010 Ford Taurus coming up behind me, he pulled along side me and it had the SHO and Ecoboost badging! The driver noticed me looking slack jawed and I mouthed floor it, he gave me a thumbs up and floored it and accelerated so fast it was almost scary.

If only I wasn't getting my Fusion Hybrid in a few weeks I'd buy one of those in a heartbeat...sexy car, looks even better on the highway...

I wasn't that impressed by its pictures, it looked good but nothing amazing. I wouldn't mind seeing one in person though. Some vehicles just look better in real life. For example the Ford GT looked good in pictures but in person it was possibly the most amazing car I've ever seen.

Exterior, interior, and engine are fine (a true manual would be great however) but for $38K, my money is going to a G8, G37, or even towards a 335.

If you're looking for a full sized car with some power, there is no competition whatsoever. The BMW and Mercedes in this price class are tiny by comparison.

That engine only gets 15mpg in the city and 25 on the highway according to Ford. Probably less than that with the SHO Performance Package.

That's pretty mediocre.

Pontiac G8, ES350, Acura TL, & Hyundai Genesis are the main competitors at the $38k price point.

The Lincoln MKS will be fitted with the same motor in 2010 but it has an even more refined interior and more luxury features. Direct competitor for the Lincoln is the M35X, Jaguar XF, Saab 9-5, BMW 530X, Acura RL, STS, MBZ E350, and A6. At the price point of $48-$52K fully loaded the Lincoln MKS is a true bargain.

I thought those numbers are for the Turbocharged engine in the SHO, so the standard engine should get more.

It is. The regular one will use the standard 3.5 (not DI or turbo charged). It puts out 263hp/249ft-tq and gets 18city/28 highway.

Compared to what huge awd car with 365+hp?

Compared to Ford's claim and the name, I guess. It seems underwhelming, particularly the 15 in the city, which is a pretty low number.

The Camaro's V8 is rated just as good or better, for example.

The Mustang's V8 does just as well in the city.

The SHO should have the EcoBoost 3.5L, a 6 speed manual, and be rear wheel drive if they want to sell a lot of them, imo.

He thought it was the regular Taurus.

for a full sized awd car that isn't bad, i would think. camry is 19/28, weighs 300 lbs less, and makes no where near the power or torque.

Found an article:
http://www.motortrend.com/road...us_sho_look/index.html

NOTES:
0 to 60 in 4.8. Not bad
25 mpg highway
365 HP
350 torque
$37,995 base price

the mustang weighs nearly 350 lbs less and has a less lossy drivetrain. omg yes. can't wait for the limited edition mustang with this motor. only issue is no ford v8 burble.

(not to mention that speed kills pretty much everything without six different letters and numbers tacked onto the name)

edit: i see that time was not the time of a tested taurus, but rather the time of a 550i that ford says the taurus will beat.

I'd probably consider the 335xi if I was looking for a fast, luxurious, AWD sedan in the $40K range.

I just think AWD was the wrong way to go with the SHO.

I'd rather have a 335xi too but they aren't in the same size class and the 335xi is $5k more. Converting a taurus to RWD and moving the engine and trans all around just for the limited number of SHOs they are going to sell would be stupid. I'd love to see Ford swap more cars over to a RWD/rwd based AWD setups but it aint happening anytime soon.

Does make the ecoboost engine's seem more impressive looking at the 335xi. Taurus is a lot bigger, has 65hp more, 50ft-lbs more, and gets the same highway and hair worse city gas mileage.

I think the obvious comparison is with the Chrysler 300 SRT8, which even after all these years is still the superior car. Ecoboost vs a 6.1 V8, the torque numbers are not even in the same ballpark...the Taurus SHO barely matches the normal 5.7 Hemi, which after incentives (employee pricing, rebates, etc.) is far cheaper.

Though with the twin turbos, the 3.5 may provide an easy tuning platform if the rest of the drivetrain can hold together. At 500hp, an AWD SHO is much more interesting.
