Saving Private Ryan

Good movie in general in terms of telling a story...not a real one at that. Great direction, cinematography, score, etc.

Band of Brothers is about 10x better at least in terms of telling a real war story.

What are some "real" war movies I like? "Black Hawk Down", "Patton", "Gettysburg", and "The Great Escape" to name a few. Oh, and "We Were Soldiers" was top notch too.

Check out the old TV show "COMBAT!" from the 60's its on 2x a day on one of the encore channels. Some of the episodes are great I think.

Oh, "Air America" was also a good film...semi accurate too.

I don't think any other movie has done as good a job describing what being a soldier in WWII meant as those last scenes in Saving Private Ryan. Just regular guys from across the country being asked to do extraordinary things. The coward who couldn't summon up the courage when called upon, the guy who fought for his life and lost, Hanks sitting there firing away at the tank just trying to get the job done because of his sense of duty, and Ryan at the end feeling the guilt for having survived and reaping the rewards of life post-war when so many good men didn't. Great stuff.

QFT. One of the more classic snubs, I still think a couple of years ago when Chicago won beating out Gangs of New York and The Pianist is a joke.

Speaking of war movies, The Pianist sort of qualifies as one and is up there as one of the best I've seen.

Of course one could list numerous Oscar snubs and its all a matter of perspective anyway .

Considering that they only bother to bring it out on military holidays, they'd catch a hell of a lot more flak for editing than leaving it clean.

If they ever air it on a non-holiday, I fully expect edits. So it'll be about 20 minutes long
