The Vikings could not explain solar eclipses, so they made stuff up. Atheists cannot explain religious belief, so they make stuff up.

Nor can atheists explain blatant stupidity. On a positive note, atheists can be comfortable saying "I don't know". No inherent need to conjure a deity as an answer to every question.

No one knows the origin of religion. The best we have is the cradle of civilization -- outside of that is sheer guess-work.

At first you said psychology, now it's zoology, if I read you correctly.

Hypotheses abound regarding the mysterious origins of religion. pseudo-psychology simply doesn't suffice to explain religiosity.

It natural to be religious, implanted in us by God, our wonderful Creator!

Order of quotes reversed to better illustrate the humorous inconsistency.

I think we can all agree that the seven deadly sins; pride (narcissism), lust (as in a lack of self control), greed, gluttony, wrath, sloth, and envy are not exactly positive traits in any human being..

False. Most of those are very positive traits, from an evolutionary view.

Sloth being the main exception, though in some cases even it might be useful for increasing chance of survival.

Uh huh on a personal level. But on the society level its the different between living in your own squalor ripping each other off or actually being productive.

Sloth is useful or it wouldn't be a common trait. It makes sense not to use energy unless necessary. Its easy to be slothful in todays world when all you gotta do is drive thru!

Religion was created by man and hence reflects both the positive and negative traits of human beings. How a person chooses to practice one's faith is too a reflection of that person's character. A violent, bigoted and deceitful person will practice his or her faith in violent, bigoted and deceitful ways. An honest, compassionate and non-violent person will practice his or her faith in honest, compassionate and non-violent ways.

That's how I see it.

I watched a documentary and actually forgot which one it was, but they asked a lot of different people the same question (about god or something) and the best response came from a Satanist.
He said that people have natural impulses and religion focuses on those natural behaviors and calls them SINFUL. Religion knows people can't stop these things, and to make them feel guilty just for being human is brilliant. He called it the greatest con game in history. This is true. Also, I am incredibly handsome.

Damn skippy!

When I'm old and rich and have the urge to throw aside my children and my old wife to buy a hot new 20 year old wife, it's just my urges. Who needs religion to prevent me from following my natural course in life?

That doesn't make sense. How could people be said to be practicing the same religion in such divergent ways, mama?

Because neither of them are practicing their religion in the way that it was written, but are just doing whatever they want to do. The same as a non-religious person.

History simply cycles, obviously.

<---- total checkmate on Moonbogg!!!

LOL

Only if you think it's checkmate when you toss the board and all the pieces on the floor. Well, perhaps that is the way you and Rob play chess with added religious rules. 😵 (insert face palm emoticon here)

That's what every religious person does.

You need to post more in p&n, because that's where we need fresh blood the most. Show how smart you are and stuff over there, and I'll get naked and keep the covers warm and even keep the light on for ya so you won't get too scared to post there, too. :$

You're right, atheists sure cannot explain atheism.

Jesus beams with pride when you use insults as answers. Is that how you debate (proselytize) in person?

Of course, that's my religious answer. Scientifically speaking, the origins are unknown.

But you reject the scientific method, all you're left with is your religious answer.

Sara next door doesn't believe gays are going to hell, Hank at work believes dancing is a sin, Joe down the street doesn't think the Bible should be taken literally, and 4-year-old little Timmy doesn't really understand any of it but plays along because his parents made him.

When it comes down to it, I doubt you could find two people who practice any religion in exactly the same way.
