Perhaps is varies from state to state, but at least in NY, teachers are expected to have higher character & values. All a teacher has to do is go out & get sloppy drunk at a bar in front of the wrong people. There's a simple form to fill out & the teacher can be subjected to an investigation (without that teacher's knowledge that they're even being investigated.)

Role model is the wrong term. Teachers should be authority figures. They teach kids how to follow arbitrary rules and be productive members of society. Kids seem to get worse every year because teachers no longer have that authority. Kids grow up thinking everything is a slap on the wrist then suddenly they get caught with a dime bag of cocaine and they go to jail for 10 years. My best teacher was someone I didn't even like. She was a rude asshole, but she got results. She would openly make fun of you if you sucked on a test. If you missed her class, she would personally phone your parents and ask why you were not there. Major bitch; great teacher.
