Palin is strongly pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life.[12] She opposes same-sex marriage, but she has stated that she has gay friends and is receptive to gay and lesbian concerns about discrimination.[12] While the previous administration did not implement same-sex benefits, Palin complied with a state Supreme Court order and signed them into law.[32]

I wouldn't really characterize that as anti-gay when Obama opposes same-sex marriage as well.

And she also signed into law same-sex benefits. So no, not at all anti-gay, maybe pro male-female marriage definition, but not anti-gay.

Oh boy do I love semantics!

this election was an up-hill fight for republicans from the get-go, so his VP choice seemed to be coming from the "what do I have to lose" side.

Good God you are dumb. A VP pick hasn't been important in carrying a state in something like 40 some years. It's a none-issue.

Guys, with this pick, we can all agree that, when it comes to women, McCain knows how to use them. He hasn't given two squirts of piss about women in his electoral history until he found it necessary to become President. This vagrant attempt at pandering will fool no one.

I'm thinking that there will be a blog/article real soon saying something like:

John McCain threw his first wife to the curb after a car accident left her deformed for a beauty queen heiress who's fortunes and connections fueled his political campaign. Now, he is doing the same with his VP selection. Going after a beauty queen who will once again help advance his political ambitions.

I see another trend: All his women have been beauty queens. Regular women may not take too kindly to women that get ahead in (John McCain's) life simply because of looks. We know Hillary didn't.

Didn't regular women take to John Kennedy because he was 'handsome'?

I guess being good looking is only a good thing if you are a Democrat.

Well, he just cut the legs out from under Obama. All the Hilarity endorsing middle-aged women would consider this a bigger progressive win than a black guy in office. If only he went with Conde Rice there wouldn't even be a point in having an election.

"No experience" (in quotes for a reason) is not the same as "no visibility", which is the issue concerning Governor Palin.

My initial thought is that this may swing 1% of the population over to vote Republican just for the sake of a woman Vice President, but even that might be a stretch. Most women who would be on the fence would still look past the VP's gender at issues like abortion and gay rights and go Democrat anyways.

What this might help the Republicans do is act as a shield against Democrat allegations of the GOP being anti-women. "How could that be, we have a woman VP!" Again, the party's traditional posture against gay rights and abortion will mostly dilute this. Worth a shot though.

She was ORDERED by a court to sign it into law. She then said she wanted the citizens to vote in a referendum on whether or not to repeal those benefits! So if most of Alaska thought discriminating against gays (for health benefits!) was ok, she'd be all for it.

Semantics? She vetoed a bill that would have revoked same-sex benefits not because she disagreed with it, but because she felt it would have been unconstitutional as it directly contradicted the state court's prior ruling. It was a practical measure since a lawsuit would have resulted in hundreds of thousands of wasted dollars for an outcome that was evident from the get go. She is is definitely smart and forward looking, but not gay friendly.

Absolutely not, any "true" Hilary supporter would never switch over to to a Republican Canadiate like John McSame. You'd need to do a massive 180 shift in your worldview; McCain is a conservative and for the war. Hilary is not.

Genius, he was of the opposite sex. A lot of women resent beauty queens because they don't have to work hard in life, just sit back and let everything come to them. The blatant pandering here is just awful. When he needs them, McCain likes his women in the mold of Barbie dolls. But, G-d forbid they should get disfigured, or McCain will dump them on the side of the road. To him, women are tools for greater ambition rather than partners.

Well, now the (R)'s truly have 'Beauty & The Beast'! Sorry but McCain looks like the Cryptkeeper.

Who are you guys kidding, Republicans like their women in the kitchen.

He just threw his own candidacy under the bus. Honestly thought he might have a small chance with Romney, oh well haha

Condi Rice is universally considered a complete failure and would open up more McSame talk.

Also you're trying to sell the argument that Obama is only where he is because he's black, which is the problem with the McSamer's, just don't get it.

Looks like with his advertising of the last few days and his VP pick, McCain has shifted his message from his experience towards an appeal to Hillary voters that he is hoping are disgruntled enough to vote Republican in November.

I guess it's all a matter how how many Hillary voters are out there that you think are receptive to this message, but I honestly think the number is far smaller than McCain does. If I try to take a step back and look at this objectively it appears to me to be a huge mistake on McCain's part to target feminists and supporters of the equivalent of Democratic Party royalty with a pro-life campaign. I just don't think it's going to work.

If this does in fact turn out to be his plan, I say today is the day he screwed himself. Do other people here genuinely think that McCain can get these Democrats and keep them until November? If so, why?

There were a large number of Clinton supporters who were not really Democrats in the way you're thinking. Many were Independents, left leaning Republicans, and centrist Dems. I think this is the target McCain is aiming at. It's a big target and I think he'll do well with this group.

The Clinton supporters who were solid Dems, disgruntled or not, will be in line with Obama. The speeches from Bill and Hillary were very effective at pulling their loyal supporters and solid Dems back in line. Without the convention support of the Clintons, Obama would have beeen finished.

Yes you are the only one.

She IS a conservative. And she is anti-tax. What more could we want?? Perhaps more time in office, otherwise she looks perfect.

Anti-tax you say? One of her acheivements as mayor of 5400 people was to raise their taxes.

McCain will be President and he has the experience that one needs.

She is going to be the VP and very few people vote because of the VP. And I don't think there is any history of people NOT voting for someone because of their VP pick. Dan Quayle anyone?

How the hell does McCain have any more experience than Obama?

The point is, McCain had been using "lack of experience" as one of the themes for his Rovian attack ads.

Now that he's selected someone with far less experience than Obama, he cannot continue without looking like a fool.

He traded in the lack of experience angle for the chance to court disgruntled Hillary-whacks.

That is what seems like a desperate and mis-guided move for McCain.

You think Palin became governor by sitting back and letting things come to her?

It's obviously pandering. Doesn't mean it won't work.

I mentioned this in another thread already but here goes again. 🙂

Was listening to the Rasmussan (sp) guy talk about the polls and former hillary supporters. At the very end of the primary the numbers were approaching a 40% dissent rate. Right now it's down to the upper 20s. He said that a successfull BHO campaign would have that number down to about 15% by election day.

15% to me sounds like a lot of votes out there for the other side and should this pick have a little bit to hold that receeding line to something north of 15, could be a decent thorn to inflict upon the other side.

and exactly as i expected, the first thing my (stay at home raised 4 kids and takes care of me) wife said was "that's terrible! how's she going to take care of her baby?"... she already don't like wife leavers...

bad move, john, from the cubeless-household-style conservative side... but this may work for the fems who believe in having someone else raise your kids for you...

i hope that they come out with something like "dad is quitting his day job to stay home with the kids in dc..."... but the bio on the dad doesn't lead me to believe that will be the case... hope i'm wrong...

Far less? That's debatable. A senator who served 143 days before hitting the campaign trail vs a state governor.

Palin won the gubernatorial election with 114,697 votes. Alaska has a population of 683,478.

In 2004, Jim Douglas won the gubernatorial election in Vermont, a state with a population of 621,254, with 181,540 votes.

Do people just not vote in Alaska?

She wins the Gun vote for him

She wins the Social vote for him

She wins the woman vote for him

She wins the Latino vote for him

She wins the retired vote for him

She wins the religious vote for him

Most important, she wins the Anti-Abortion vote for him

It's a lock for McCain

Oh and she is hot
