(CNN) - Potential 2012 presidential candidate Rick Santorum said the "abortion culture" in America is to blame for the failing Social Security system.
In an interview with WEZS Radio in Laconia, New Hampshire, Tuesday, the former Republican Pennsylvania senator said abortion rates are influencing the number of children born in the United States and there are therefore not enough children to support the program long-term.

"The Social Security system in my opinion is a flawed design, period. But having said that, the design would work a lot better if we had stable demographic trends," Santorum said. "A third of all the young people in America are not in America today because of abortion."
Santorum, an outspoken opponent of abortion, made the comments in response to a caller who said abortion rates are to blame for the problems with Social Security and Medicare.
"We have seven children so we're doing our part to fund the Social Security system," Santorum said. "I want children to be living in America and contributing. America's greatest resource is our people and we're denying America what it needs, which is more Americans."
Santorum was in New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation primary state Tuesday to meet with voters and headline a GOP dinner in Concord.

He starts out correct; that SS is flawed.. but then he goes brain-dead by bringing in the so-called 'abortion culture' into it as a major contributor.

He's running for president in 2012... but what he should really be running for is a functional brain.

Well what he is saying does have some merit. If we didnt have as easy access to abortion as we have. There would be close to 40 million more people to help pay into the system.

That said I wouldnt run on that platform 😉

Hell that's nothing, New Gingrich believes radical Islamists are the same as Secualr Atheists.

Just when you thought the Republlicans had a bunch a shitty candiates in 2008 a whole new crop shows up and lowers the bar.

Meh. It's true that more babies would grow up into more tax payers, but it's also true that those taxpayers would demand more government goodies.

This is no surprise. Birthers, anti-Muslims, and overall anti education platforms the last year has many moderates shaking their heads and fists...

they may as well give the nomination to camel joe...

Total BS... it would, at best, kick the can down the road a few years.

I didnt make any claim on it saving the system. But 40 million more tax payers would certainly help the system. The system requires population growth. Abortion has deprived the system of 40 million people with which to suck money. Of course that is going to hurt it. You cant deny that.

40 million more contributors are also 40 million more recipients.. so no, it wouldn't have really helped at all.

You there a name for a system that takes more people at the bottom to prop it up. It's a pyramid scheme. The system needs to be adjusted for reality.

This can't be possible. A system that requires a growing number of payers in order to stay solvant is called a pyramid scheme and we know SS is not a Pyramid scheme.

Also if all those babies were born instead of aborted we would have an even greater population of people living on unemployment.

Are these people instantly collecting payments or something?

The issue right now is a huge bump in recipients in the baby boomer generation. 40 million more people would definately help pay for them.

So you want USA to turn into China or India? Thats lovely.

No, but they're going to be collecting payments someday.

The US population grew by about 100 million since Roe v. Wade. There are approximately 76 million baby boomers. 40 million wouldn't be enough to help significantly.

And? When will that be? Sometime after 2035?

That is 40% more to help pay. What are you talking about? That would increase the ratio of payers to collectors by nearly .5

That would definately help.

Don't worry brah, we can population grow our way out!

and also drive down wages so the payment pool isn't as large... :hmm:

How about legal immigrants who become us citizens in middle age (in their 40s), work 20 years, and then draw SS benefits?

As compared to people who work since their 18 years old, and draw SS.
