Hip Hop Culture. It's a culture now is it? Something along the lines of the great cultures of history. The Egyptians, The Greeks, The Romans, The Hip Hops. Somehow I don't see it fitting in there anywhere. I mean sure, it makes more sense than an empire based on furniture, The Ottomans, but still....it's a bit silly to call Hip Hop a culture.

Well they sure wont be hearing about The Rocks either.

Gone are the days of lyricists, 2pac, Biggy--it seems that the only thing people care about are the thumping basslines. But it is actually getting a little bit better, it's at least tolerable, with Em and Fab. Aye, whenever i hear Ludacris....:|

What if I told you that rap and hiphop are just plain BAD. I'm 19 (not an old timer by any means) and I think rap is one of the worst things to happen to this world. There is plenty of good music comming out these days (Nightwish, Therion, Tool, SOAD, Bond etc), but rap and hiphop isn't it.

My parents never said that. I object to rap objectifying women as "my bitches" along with glorifying violence, etc.. I think 90% of rap sucks, though I do hear a tune now and then that I actually like.

People don't realize most hip music seen heard on TV or radio is aimed at teens, who are generally the biggest contributers of money to the entertainment/shopping industry in the US. If anyone judges anything simply through what they have thrown at them for consumer appeal their statements are meaningless and uninformed.

Rap videos don't degrade women. Women have choosen to show off their bodies because of the money hidden behind male desire. If I was a hot chick I'd be milkin my body for all it's worth as long as the money was legit. I wouldn't be Jenna Jamison, but there's no harm in wearing tight cloths and shaken booty around, it's alot better than working 8 hours a day. It's no different than those budwiser commercials, men admire ladies.

Yeah, and you hear Sugarhill, Run DMC, and Furious Five on the radio all the time.....right......Not.

20 years from now you will STILL hear Zeppelin, The Beatles, They Who, The Stones, Eagles, Van Halen, etc, etc, ad nauseum, but hardly anyone will even remember who Eminem was.
The one thing that all those great rock groups have binding them together is longevity. No rapper can make that claim, yet. The closest you can come is LL Cool J, and he has huge periods of time between his runs of popularity. Run DMC was big in the 80's, but have done nothing since. All the other ones just come, stay on the scene for a few years, and fade away. We have yet to see a single rapper get on top and stay at or near the top for a long period.
That is why you'll never see a "classic rap" station on the radio.

He talks sh*t well I should put it. I have alot of black family/friends (black myself) and I've yet to meet a man of color who listens to his music,

If only black people listened to rap, there would be a very tiny market for it. Most people that listen to mainstream rap are white.

Ludacris is an entertainer, don't look at him as anything else.

Common
Talib Kweli
Cormega
AZ
WyClef
C-Bo
E-Life
Nas
The East Sidaz
Twista

All these guys have something decent to say, I never enjoyed older rap because it was to slow and gangstar oriented. I don't enjoy listening to people complain and their was alot of that back then.

As far as Eminem, I don't like the actual guy behind the image. If people can pull something meaningfull from him I have nothing against that.

I think the problem lies on people's perception on music.
I like any kinds of music (my definition of music is anything on .mp3 LOL) such as
40s 50s oldies, the beatles, rock, rap, j-pop, latin, classical, game soundtrack.
As long as what you listen to gives you pleasure, it should be treated as a form of art.
Some people hate rap because they don't want to put rap side by side with whatever kind of music they like.
The simpsons epidsode about Homer's rage art sums up pretty well of the whole conflict.

I laugh all the time when I see the local teens in the parking lot drinking the 40s and trying to act big and everything. They got the bass pumpin. Its even better when the cops come and bust them for drinking and loud music. The best part is when the parents show up and the tuff kids turn into mamas boy and start crying because they don't want to go to jail. They are just trying to live the gangsta life style and have no clue to what it really means.

This is true. Rappers like to think they are part of some kind of unique culture, to the point that they will turn on their own if they think they are "selling out". (see MC Hammer)
But none of them have any problem with mostly white kids buying their own cd's.

I don't understand why people listen to the crap they call rap. It seems very degrading to our culture and I am ashamed that it is the so called music of my generation. Flame me all you want but I have came upon that conclusion myself and it's not like I was not around it like some of the older people here. I am 19 and hate the stuff. It hurts my brain when I hear the recycled beats and filth the rappers intermit between the beats using a very bad form of rhyme. It's not like they have true talent. If they actually wanted to use their abilities they would be writing poems with deep symbolisms and not rhymes with the depth of a kiddy pool for retarded children.

Read a thread before you post in it, the mere fact that you don't listen to it voids your statement, you know nothing about the music.

A song for all the people who think rappers talk about nothing meaningful

Then your beef is with ghetto culture. Rap is simply a reflection on said culture, not the other way around. You grow up in that kind of environment then that is the experience you draw upon when creating your art.

Edit: There is plenty of rap that isn't filled with "filth"

I hear rap all the time, it surrounds me and is almost impossible to escape. Everyone I know plays it in their cars and etc..I don't play it because I can't stand it. How would you like it if I forced you to listen to people scratching a blackboard with their fingernails and called it music?

because i post whatever i feel like

The force that through the green fuse drives the flower
Drives my green age; that blasts the roots of trees
Is my destroyer.
And I am dumb to tell the crooked rose
My youth is bent by the same wintry fever.

The force that drives the water through the rocks
Drives my red blood; that dries the mouthing streams
Turns mine to wax.
And I am dumb to mouth unto my veins
How at the mountain spring the same mouth sucks.

The hand that whirls the water in the pool
Stirs the quicksand; that ropes the blowing wind
Hauls my shroud sail.
And I am dumb to tell the hanging man
How of my clay is made the hangman's lime.

The lips of time leech to the fountain head;
Love drips and gathers, but the fallen blood
Shall calm her sores.
And I am dumb to tell a weather's wind
How time has ticked a heaven round the stars.

And I am dumb to tell the lover's tomb
How at my sheet goes the same crooked worm.

He has his own label, Shady Records, of course its funded by another, as are all the small record labels. He can do what he wants in terms of making music.

I cant stand it when people smoke around me, so I stay away from people who smoke. Stop conversing with the people who enjoy the music or grow up and stop letting something so simple get to you, nobody forces you to be around the people you know.

Kind of laughable that so many people totally disregard Eminem's talent as "anyone can rap"...

Open your eyes; rapping actually requires talent. There is a reason most cannot do it; just like any other musician/artist. Just because you don't like his lyrics doesn't mean he's not talented; just about every rapper in the business that i've heard talk about him agrees that the man is crazy talented.

I'm not much of a rap fan but I know talent. I know there are tons of quality rappers out there that have pure talent, Eminem is one.

Whether you like him or not does not equate whether or not he is talented.

If you think all rap is what MTV plays check out bands like The Roots, Common, Jurassic 5, etc... it takes talent.
