nah, 2500k is better bang for the buck. 2600k isn't 50% faster, but it's 50% more expensive. 2600k is enough faster at certain tasks to be compelling.

In F@H, you have to have at least 8 cores to get the big points units. When I was only doing the regular units, my X6 was killing my 920@3.6 in ppd. Now, all my nehalem CPU's are killing my X6 (as in 10k for X6, and 30k for my I7 950's).

So I need a 2600k with HT to get my 8 virtual cores to get the big points, so for me its worth it.

Do you have any boxes that aren't folding? Or are you looking at trying to climb the F@H ranks even higher? you are ONLY 48th after all.

my 980x does 4.4. however, now that the 2600k is out, it is only worth it MAYBE if you need the extra 2 cores quite often. I will wait until at least 2011 till next upgrade, but may get a laptop with sandy bridge, for quakecon 2011.

Is Anandtech full of paupers? Only the reviews that show favorability to the mainstream edition of SB seem to be posted. Why not the clock to clock 4.4GHz HardOCP review? They show the 980X besting the 2600K at 4.4GHz in most of the benchmarks.

Let's see. You have a pic of a Vette, vehemently defend a $1000 chip that loses in most benchmarks to a $280 mainstream chip, and are now insultingly asking the entire forum if they are all "paupers".

If you want to flaunt your big toys, that's your right. I don't recall it being your right to insult everyone else.

Most benchmarks? Clock for clock, no.

Original Topic: Is this chip worth buying for the cost?

Answer: Unless you need massive multi-threaded might, not even remotely.

Would you be happier if I said "many"? "a lot"? "more than would be expected for a chip costing 1/3rd of the price"?
Why the op wants to know this, I have no idea. Furthermore, I am happy for the owners of the 980x, it is a house. But there is only one clear answer, and all these tangents about clock for clock are irrelevant. The 2600k meets or beats the 980x in many benches, and for the average user, it is indisputably a better buy.
