Sandy will be Obama's equivalent of Romney's first debate

This week is going to be for Obama what the first debate was for Romney.

Romney got a boost when, after months of political ads making him out as evil, people saw him live and thought to themselves: "Hey, he doesn't look so bad after all."

Same thing will happen here. Romney and the GOP SuperPACs have been trashing Obama for months as incompetent and uncaring and in need of replacement. And now they are seeing Obama doing what a president should, and being praised even by a GOP governor.

It won't make a huge difference, but even a small move matters.

Assuming Sandy doesn't create huge logistical challenges for voters (and it seems likely to at least create additional hurdles) that have a major effect on turnout, I would agree it's highly likely that the Obama administration's able handling of Sandy will help the President. God knows it should - this is a direct illustration of the administration's competency to deal with a major disaster, and passing that test is a big feather in the President's cap.

Meh, I have a hard time believing there's still undecided people out there with such a huge disparity in vision being offered for the country. If you don't know where you stand at this point then you're truly just moving along with the herd.

As much as I'd like to believe that, sometimes I feel that predicting the political impact of events is like reading tea leaves. You could be right or wrong. I thought Obama would get a small bounce from his narrow victories in the second and third debates, and Biden's narrow victory. He got zero from the second debate and zero from the VP debate. He may have gotten a miniscule advantage out of the third.

Romney seemed to reach his peek about 10 days after the first debate. There has been a very slight pullback since then, but overall everything has been extremely static for over 2 weeks now. I feel like this race has already been decided in the hearts and minds of voters. It only remains to be seen whether the pollsters have accurately determined what that decision is. I am doubtful that Sandy will be much of a bump for Obama, or something like, for example, this Friday's jobs report.

Even a half point bump for Obama over this would probably seal this one up so I guess we'll see.

I think the incoherence goes deeper than language. I see a mind bereft of a capacity to reason, driven into associative thinking by fear, a mind that jumps from idea to idea derived from a mental prison otherwise known as the Bible. I see a mind clinging desperately to a rope in the dark six inched off the ground. I see groves worn in the ground by a tiger padding its cage. The words are fragments of madness well rehearsed, code for this or that association, full of magical significance to him and just babbling to you. The madness lies in the notion these words convey meaning to folk who don't operate on magical thinking.
