Exactly. 🙁 I would be very interested in living in that area were it not for the absurd housing and cost of living that make it only wishful thinking. In fact those factors preclude the entire state for me. What a shame.

i love visiting sd:

0. hot chicks
1. fantastic weather
2. gaslamp district
3. lots of beaches
4. the restaurants in SD, by far, make the tastiest burritos I've eaten. And they don't make it a habit of adding fillers like rice and beans.

That's my problem with burritos i've had in the bay area -- rice and beans. There's nothing like a burrito stuffed with carne asada, salsa, and guac... the way God intended.

haha, people from l.a. get the best of both worlds 😛

olvera street's where it's at

I have lived in Memphis my whole life, but I have travelled to a lot of cities. San Diego is the ONLY city I have ever visited in that I would consider living. The weather rocks, a lot of pretty women, great food, very clean, laid-back atmosphere, and I just love that Mexican-Spanish architecture found around the city. Hmmm, SD es muy bonita. How I would love to go back someday, soon.

it's expensive and the traffic sucks, its always hot and its SoCal. But i would much rather be here than most places in the U.S.

I just left San Diego recently. I lived there for 3 years. I worked for a company known as Midway Home Entertainment. I'm sure most of you have heard of them (makers of Mortal Kombat). I lived in La Jolla half of those 3 years and Mira Mesa the other half. San Diego is a great place to live assuming cost isn't a factor. The perfect weather all year round is the only thing San Diego really has going for it. Aside from the weather, you can find equal if not better everything else other places (ie parts of florida like Ft. Lauderdale). I had a great job but I'm at the point in my life where I want to start buying real estate and I felt the rediculous prices there just wasn't worth it. 400 grand for a crappy little 3 bedroom house way inland in San Diego = No Thanks. Right now I'm temporarily living in New York but I'm moving to Florida in May. I'm buying a nice house right on the water which will cost me between 500-800k. If I were to get something similar in San Diego it would definitely be well over a million.

no chinatown of japantown. There is a Little Italy. There are large communities of Vietnamese (Kearny Mesa) and Filipinos (National City) though.

its nice out there but you cant compare apples versus oranges. SD !> Boston and Boston !> SD it all depends on what you like. SOme people like the cold weather and those of us born on the east coast want to stay east coast.....I cant deal with the laid backness of the west coast and people telling me that I am "harshing their mellow"....so in either case....both have the good and both have the bad

I've lived in North County San Diego for the past 8 years and I love it. I can't imagine a better place to live. Traffic sucks though so I would try to find a place to live that is near where you work. I happen to work in Vista and live near the coast. It is 12 miles from home to work for me.

BTW-It was 80 degrees here a couple days ago. Dropped down to the high 60s today though. It was 47 this morning when I got up.

Edit-If you need a good realtor let me know. I am married to one! 😀

I grew up in upstate New York. Spent the first 22 years of my life there. I much prefer the west coast quite frankly.

Mira mesa represent, I hang out in the La Jolla area quite a bit with frnds

I moved here from the midwest earlier this year, totally love it (although I havent really enjoyed the beach too much, 2 much work 🙁 )

the weather itself was a big selling point for me

SD has a good amount of jobs too, atleast Qualcomm, Nokia , the wireless companies always seem to be hiring

I lived in SD for six months 1993. I also spent some time vacationing there this past summer. It didn't seem to have changed much, other than the housing prices. If houses were less expensive, I'd probably be living there now. Of course, so would about 10 million other people.
We rented an apt in the clairemont area, just off of Balboa. Decent area that is close to everything. About 10 minutes from the beach.

ive lived in san diego since the day of my birth. ive lived all over, from the east county (lemon grove), to the mid-lower portion (clairemont), to the streets and slums (bonita/chula vista), beaches (carlsbad), to my current residence north county (vista). i love this city with all my heart, and never want to leave it. in fact, when i was looking for jobs up in orange county/capistrano, i was even willing to commute if need be. the weather is perfect, the scenery (😉 ) is even better, the nightlife is fun, esp. for my age (early 20's), and its just overall a very enjoyable city. my cousin, who currently goes to school at boston tries to get back home whenever he can because he likes it here so much. it just has that effect on you. like i said, wouldnt want to live anywhere else.

Any tips on great night-life places? I'm 21 now and need some good ideas of places to go. My friends and I went to the Gaslamp the other week, but it seems like mostly older people, like late 20's, go there. Not to mention there was a $15 cover charge for every club. Is PB suited for the the early 20 crowd? I went there for my 21st bday, but haven't been back since.

Hmm, I'm going to have to flame you on that one 🙂 San Diego was bar none my favorite place to live. Perfect weather, fairly decent traffic (only sore zone around where I lived was "the merge", where I-5 and I-805 came together), really nice people, good infrastructure, available high-tech jobs, wonderful public schools, yadda. We lived in Carmel Valley (just east of Del Mar). I'm going to say that the only downside was the expensive housing: $1400 or so for a 950 ft^2 2 bdrm apt!

We've lived in S. Fla. for 4+ years, including about one year in Coral Springs, a suburb of Ft. Lauderdale. Here, traffic is pretty bad, even though we're loaded with 6 lane divided roads, overall the people don't seem nearly as nice, lots of sketchy companies (been scammed a few times), crazy insurance (along with crazy drivers, especially in parts of Broward county) etc. Only plus: cheaper houses, though the real estate market has been booming.

So, in San Diego, most of the nice places to live would be in North County. If you're really rich (millionaire or something), you could buy a house in Rancho Santa Fe. Carmel Valley is a great upper middle class community. If you have kids and want good schools, other fairly nice middle school areas would include some of inland north county (Rancho Penasquitos, Poway, Rancho Bernardo, etc), Solana Beach, Del Mar (the houses here tend to be old), etc. If you want a cheaper (but still decent) place, Mira Mesa, Oceanside, Carlsbad, albeit the schools aren't nearly as great as those around Carmel Valley or Rancho Penasquitos.

If you can afford it, La Jolla would be interesting 🙂 But otherwise, I'd say the overall best place would be Carmel Valley because it's on coastal I-5 corridor (not the inland I-15 corridor), great schools, newer communities, and really nice neighbors.
