From my research on the Nokia 8290, it hasn't received much praise. The phones reception, its sturdiness, and the tendency of it infrared transfer to overwrite your PDAs phonebook appear to be focal points of dispraise. The first two factors, I believe, are among the top requirements for a cellular phone. The third quirk is just an annoyance.
It is a very popular phone, so there's tons of feedback available, if you spend a little time searching. All of the reviews from large publication,
ZDNet,
CNet, and
Geek.com, were extremely complimentary, although they seemed to focus entirely upon the phones features. The user reviews, I believe, offer the most accurate view of the phones field-worthiness. Most of the complimentary reviews of the phones found were vague and simple. They usually said something along the lines of ?It?s stylish? or ?It?s so small.? Although such powerful rhetoric is swaying, I, ultimately, chose avoid the phone--not without much dismay. Most of the negative feedback was consistent and appeared to lack maliciousness. I didn?t include my research because I never bothered so save my links since I didn?t plan on using them again, and the research was relatively easy. I used both
Metacrawler and
Google.
I chose the Ericsson
T28w. I wish I'd chosen the
T28z because I really don't need a world phone but information on the T28w and T28z was far and wide. The T28w had it own set of problems I discovered from my research, but most of it had to do with quality inconsistancy (microphone going out and flip-screen latch breaking), change of time-zone problems, or fear of radiation. All the reviewers said that Ericsson customer support was effective and only a low percentage of users were afflicted by this problem. I have a few friends with the T28w, and they've owned theirs for months (6+) and have yet to encounter a problem. The T28z is newer and may not suffer from the quality problems that plagued the T28w. Despite all of this, I've been satisfied, so far.
I hope this helps.
