is it $39 for any phone or $39 for the Nokia 8290?... cuz if it's $39 for an 8290, great... but my friend gives out Nokia 6190s and 5190s for free like any other store.

What is the contact info for this business?
Name of Company, Phone Number, and contact person... this is very good. And I'll ask my friend if he will beat your guys price.

<< In Canada, the phone goes for $850+15%taxes (canadian dollars). >>

The phone you are referring to is a Nokia 8890 dual-mode GSM900/1900 Worldphone. It has a brushed aluminum casing whereas the 8290 is a single mode GSM1900 phone with interchangeable plastic covers. If you REALLY want an 8890, go to www.picocell.net, they are based out of Vancouver, BC. Their pricing on the 8890 is $795. They also sell the 8290 for $299.

Most people get these 2 phones mixed up but the difference is like the difference between a BMW 318i and a BMW M3... :) :D:Q:confused:

Laxer - Roaming, long distance, and airtime charges are all independent of each other. Just because you roam you are not incurred long distance charges. A lot of people would assume that you would, but if you have the $39.99 plan, then you get free long distance anyway, so no, you never incur any domestic long distance charges, EVER. As far as the time specific charged roaming deal, I can't explain that one, but whenever I go on business to Oregon and I'm on the Voicestream network, I only get charged during the day.

If anybody has any questions about Pacific Bell/Cingular wireless service, go ahead and e-mail me. I am not affiliated with the company, but I am however a very statisfied customer.

nightspd,

You can do an "upgrade" which is basically trading in your old phone for a $150 purchase credit towards a new phone. The only down side is that you have to sign a 1 yr contract and you have to pay tax on the original price.

wildting88 I have a 5190 and want to get the new 8290 but don't know how to cash in on the cheap prices without having to get a friend and sign me up for a new cell phone deal...cuz I know that these dealers make their money off of the service contracts and not the phones itself really. I read about the $150 cash rebates for trading in the phones....but where is that possible? I want to get this phone bad but don't want to spend more than $50......help!!!

baloobear- don't cancel your phone yet... drive down to LA, get the 8290 for free by opening a new account... (yes, you get a different number, but live with it) you can choose a 510 number if you want, or you can switch it by calling 611.

cancel your other phone like a week later. simple as that.

Just roll over the icons at top right of the message area. One of them is to private message someone. If they don't have that option enabled, another icon will bring up their profile, sometimes their email adddy is there.

if you terminate your contract early, you will be charged $150, just to remind you. but if you're done with your contract, it's totally a good idea to reactivate a new contract with new phone.

I have a 6190 and I want more details on how to get a 8290. Someone suggested just cancelling the old plan. It's not that easy. All plans have a 1 year contract and I am midway through mine. What's the word? I am from Monterey Park but going to school at UCSB. I can come home for the weekend to get a phone no problem. Would these little shops understand the upgrade program?

You're wrong about the long distance/roaming thing. If you're roaming, you WILL be charged long distance because most of the little perks of pacbell/cingular plans (i.e. free long distance, m2m) only apply when u're in the California-Nevada coverage area. Once you start roaming you'll be charged .15/min roaming AND .60/min long distance. Trust me, I know this from personal experience. They tried raping me with a $250 dollar bill last time I went to Michigan. I got it lowered to $100 by whining a bit, though.

The cheapest i found for the 8890 was in a cell phone store called Atlantic Cellular down in LA and Orange county area. They sell it for 323 out the door (all taxes included).

I bought one myself and the guy who sold it to me (this taiwanese guy called William) was hella cool. he even showed me how to scam 2 additional phones. So its a good deal to buy one.

Heres how the deal goes.

Buy the phone for 323

Scam 2 phones

E-Gay for 400 a pop

and make 472....almost enough to pay cell phone bill for a year...

THIS POST IS ONLY FOR PEOPLE WITH NO MORALS

peace out

From my research on the Nokia 8290, it hasn't received much praise. The phones reception, its sturdiness, and the tendency of it infrared transfer to overwrite your PDAs phonebook appear to be focal points of dispraise. The first two factors, I believe, are among the top requirements for a cellular phone. The third quirk is just an annoyance.

It is a very popular phone, so there's tons of feedback available, if you spend a little time searching. All of the reviews from large publication, ZDNet, CNet, and Geek.com, were extremely complimentary, although they seemed to focus entirely upon the phones features. The user reviews, I believe, offer the most accurate view of the phones field-worthiness. Most of the complimentary reviews of the phones found were vague and simple. They usually said something along the lines of ?It?s stylish? or ?It?s so small.? Although such powerful rhetoric is swaying, I, ultimately, chose avoid the phone--not without much dismay. Most of the negative feedback was consistent and appeared to lack maliciousness. I didn?t include my research because I never bothered so save my links since I didn?t plan on using them again, and the research was relatively easy. I used both Metacrawler and Google.

I chose the Ericsson T28w. I wish I'd chosen the T28z because I really don't need a world phone but information on the T28w and T28z was far and wide. The T28w had it own set of problems I discovered from my research, but most of it had to do with quality inconsistancy (microphone going out and flip-screen latch breaking), change of time-zone problems, or fear of radiation. All the reviewers said that Ericsson customer support was effective and only a low percentage of users were afflicted by this problem. I have a few friends with the T28w, and they've owned theirs for months (6+) and have yet to encounter a problem. The T28z is newer and may not suffer from the quality problems that plagued the T28w. Despite all of this, I've been satisfied, so far.

I hope this helps.
