SAMSUNG SM950 PRO NVMe SSD

suspect this is what johnnylucky was hinting to about a week ago when he said those waiting for the NVMe SM951 were in for a pleasant surprise next month (ie Sept)

Hopefully we'll see them available by the end of the month

- when i used google to translate the page into english, the big "shocker" was that "no stock available"

A non-disclosure agreement (NDA) was in effect so I couldn't say much. Still can't. I think the French vendor jumped the gun, especially since the vendor does not have any in stock, no specifications, and no info about availability.

First hint that something was in the works was at one of the big shows or conferences earlier this year. A Samsung vice president in charge of flash memory or ssd research or something commented about consumers purchasing Samsung OEM ssd's when retail versions were in the works. The same vice president also casually mentioned that Samsung had ssd's in their laboratories that had lasted the equivalent of 28 years of typical use. After that everything went quiet for months.

Last month Samsung released several business enterprise ssd's. Some web sites reported that one of the enterprise ssd's would replace the SM951. That information turned out to be incorrect so I started contacting my sources. I received confirmation from 4 seperate sources that there would be a new retail model this month but could not say anything because of the NDA.

I've already added the Samsung 950 Pro to the consumer ssd database I maintain. Here is the link:

http://www.johnnylucky.org/data-storage/ssd-database.html

I'll add links to technical reviews as soon as they are published. The ssd's are broken down into interface categories from PCIe 3.0 x 4 all the way down to mSATA. There are links to technical reviews in English and many other languages. There is no advertising. It is strictly a hobby for me.

MAYBE now with the french vendor having let the cat out of the bag, so to speak, samsung will allow it's vendors to release more info

just out of curiousity, why didn't you decide to keep the intel 750?

Decided the price wasnt worth the speed increase(little bit of buyer remorse and also the possibility of have to spend $400 for custom orthotics). Will wait to see what comes out later this year. I used it as a secondary drive.

What's the difference between the sm951 nvme and the sm950 pro nvme?

I'm guessing but i would say OEM vs Retail, the name 950 pro fits with Samsungs current consumer SSD naming standards.

If the above is the case then the difference is the level of support you get from Samsung,
SM951 = None, you have to deal with the OEM.
950 Pro = Samsung indirectly via the retailers.

Under the hood the devices will probably be identical or maybe different FLASH.

Scan had a single 512 samsung nvme in stock this morning for a few hours, but I passed it up in favor of this rumor >.<

Interesting, I will be looking out for this.

i was just thinking about it and realized i waited thru June, then July & August for the samsung sm951 NVMe release, which still hasn't happened, only to learn of the 950 Pro Nvme which hopefully will be released soon

i've got a feeling this is going to be a november / december event

I hope not, but it does feel a bit like the other thread "never ending wait for nvme"

Several sources have said that we are in for a pleasant surprise in September which is now half over. sigh...

Same here. With this much delay by Samsung, I really hope this will give other companies the opportunity to release competing products at a close performance level and drive prices considerably down.

Nice list, thanks.
I just noticed the controller for the mx200 in your list is wrong, that should be marvell. bx is the silicon motion.

Soulkeeper - Thanks for the information. It took me a moment to figure out you meant the Crucial MX200 M.2 SATA 3 ssd and not the MX200 standard 2.5 inch SATA 3 6Gb/s. I'll make the correction in the morning when I do the daily ssd database update.

just visited that french website http://www.pc21.fr/fiche/mz-v5p256bw...-i1404310.html and they no longer are stating "0" quantity in stock - for the hey of it i started the order placement procedure and it accepted it (i didn't go thru with it as i'm in the US and would rather buy in country

it might just be he's building orders or maybe he does have them in stock
be interesting to see if ramcity shows up with them

Ram city recon mid October before they will have stock of the SM951 nvme, he didn't know about the rumored 950 Pro, or was keeping mum.

i believe johnnylucky's report on the 950 pro - i wonder if ramcity doesn't want to loose sales on the sm951 nvme ssds they've got due in by confirming the 950 pro

UPDATE:

A few more French vendors published web pages yesterday featuring the Samsung 950 Pro. Like the first one they are not yet available and there are no photos or technical specifications. Here is a link to one of particular interest:

http://estock.fr/basketadd.php?partnumber=MZ-V5P256BW&eStockSID=36ac3c51275f0e6ea0410bb865909378

According to that vendor the 950 Pro should be available in 8 to 12 days. The page appeared yesterday so that would mean availability sometime between the 24 and 28th of September.

In addition, an Australian vendor reported a shipment of the Samsung 950 Pro NVMe ssd is expected to arrive before the end of the month.

Finally two different sources in the USA confirmed the 950 Pro exists and that they would be available soon. There was no mention of a release date.

Samsung usually makes their ssd announcements during big conferences and shows. I'll have to check for major events next week.

Hey all.
Just came across this thread. I'm a little behind on the SSD news but is this rumored 950 pro supposed to be "better" than the 850 pro? I ask because Im really close to buying an 850 pro but will wait if this 950 is near.
