Samsung PC2700 DDR: Are they good?

I need to get some DDR PC2700, and I found a good price on the Samsungs. Are they good memory? How do they compare to Kingmax or OCZ?

I have this ram with an Asus P4S333, my FSB is at 140 (with 4:5 ratio my memory is at 175 (corrected)) and with moderate settings, sisoft is reporting 2650/2686 as the bandwith.

I got mine from newegg for ~$95 shipped. It's a one sided stick and is 6ns, 2.5cas. I think I paid a bit much, and not being able to put it on the fastest settings is a bit of a bummer. Otherwise it seems fine.

I've heard bad things about OCZ all around, but generally good things about Kingmax (5ns).

EDIT: I was off quite a bit here. At 4:5 ratio my memory is overclocked to 175 not 168 and the reason I can't set better timings for the memory is because of the Sis645 chipset. I'm not so bummed now :)

Samsung chips have been very good, I've heard they are good overclocking too. Crucial uses Samsung among others on their sticks so they must be quality chips. I would go for it! I would go for Samsung over OCZ and probably Kingmax too.

Funny thing is all I've read about is how fast OCZ DDR memory are. But then you read in the forums and people bash OCZ. I don't get it. Most sites say that OCZ PC3000 has better memory scores than Kingmax PC2700.

Where are you guys hearing about the bad news regarding OCZ?

If you really want OCZ, buy it at Newegg. Then you could just RMA it if it's complete crap.

Alright... I've got almost a whole computer ready and waiting. My Radeon 8500 is just itching for an AGP slot to fill.. but I don't know now whether to go with RDRAM or DDR.

I'd like to keep this cheap... I was planning on $125 for mobo, $150 for CPU, and $150 (512mb) for RAM, but I don't know if that's going to happen anymore. I could go as high as another $100 on there, if that'd help.

I was planning on going with the P4B266-C, a 1.8a, and Cruical, but Crucial's darn expensive now! I looked, and could go with bonafide "Samsung" PC2700 DDR somewhere else for less than crucial's price on 2100.

OR, I could bite the bullet, buy RDRAM and a TH7-II or whatever, and hope for the best.

What should I do? I'm willing to overclock, even buy RDRAM, I just want to get the best bang for my buck at this point.

What Mobo/RAM should I buy?

I am in the process of building a Th7-II, and 1.6a system right now. I've had some problems, and my first two rimm slots don't work with memory in them, just crimms. It has been a bit of a hassel but shows really great potential. After I didn't use the "fix agp/pci" option I was finally able to boot at a 133fsb. My memory scores were 3280 at this point and could only go up from there.

If you decide to go the TH7-II route, here are just a couple of hints from the problems I had. Obviously, don't use the "fix command" if overclocking above 125fsb unless you flash to the 77beta bios. The option doesn't work and continues to run your agp at the default divider. Buy your motherboard from a vendor that turns over their inventory frequently. There are still cases out of people buying these motherboards with either a pre-38 bios, or the non-ics memory clock chips. If you are going to overclock, Get the low density Samsung Rdram. I made the mistake of getting the High Density and couldn't get much of an overclock at all from the ram. The ram you would want is the 8 device for 128megs, or 16 device for the 256megs. Remember you have to buy the ram in pairs. I think these are the main issues I ran into, but let me know if you have any other concerns about this board.

From what I've read around the forums, the 1.8a's usually don't clock any higher then the 1.6a's. 1.6a's are cheaper and would allow for higher bus speeds at the same cpu speed. You should read posts around the forums and decide for yourself which chip to go with.

So how fast have you gotten your machine overclocked too?
What do you think is the limiting factor to your system?

I am getting the feeling that a lot of people are wondering about what type of memory to use DDR or Rambus. Check this article out and let me know what you think

Has any one out there gotten a 1.6A up to 2.4 with Rambus?

2133 (16x133) is the highest I've gotten my overclock to so far. I am still at default voltage and have a lot of room to increase. I am waiting for a new heatsink before I push the computer any farther. I don't see a reason to not be able to hit a clock speed as high a ddr setup though. Since my "fix" ratio doesn't work, I think my cut off will be 160fsb. Most likely my cpu won't be able to hit that anyway, at least with voltage I would feel safe giving it.
