I ordered 1 of these on the 31st, and it shows it shold be showing up today, if so, I'll add a few comments as to how it performs here. I didn't want to post it at that ime, as a good deal, as I don't know it it runs yet :)

Newegg no longer responds to my emails period after spending many thousands with them over the years. Not sure what is up with those people, but I am very wary of them now.

Just received mine. Label reads "Designed by Toshiba Samsung Storage Technology". That should clear up the rebadge question.

Well, it runs, accepts firmware on the second try, but dosn't allow you to pick a burning speed, so far I say it is fair.

Uh, wouldn't that be dependant on software? It's the software that allows you to select the burning speed.

Before you buy a sata optical drive make sure your mother board supports it. My M2N32SLI mobo manual says that it does not support sata optical drives.

I ordered the retail version (SH-S183L/BSBN) for $38+shipping from page computer. I didn't mind paying for shipping since I ordered other things that I needed. Since then the price has gone up just like other stores. They offer the OEM version for $34+shipping, but it's currently back-ordered.

Cool, but $8 shipping. Brings the OEM version to around retail at newegg. Maybe others will have better luck. Man I wish this would go down to like ~$40 shipped.

I can't find anything but nero for it, the Media is Taiyo Yuden TG02, Still waiting on the ordered media to show, but these did 12x on my Plex. No option to do that on the Sammy.

i saw something on the samsung firmware page, smart burn or some similarly named program, which referenced either changing burning or reading speeds. too lazy to look now, but you may want to check that out.

Does the retail version at Page Computer come with a white faceplate? I'd be all over this if only I could find a version that wasn't black!

It was the Media, I picked up 2 of the 25 pack cakebox's that are on Sale at BB for $6.99 per, which are 16x DVD+R, and burned a movie at 18x with it.

Seems to work fine. Should get my DL Verbatim's on Monday, hopefully they will burn equally well :)

I have the IDE version of this and it is an excellent drive. Very fast, and very quiet. Only a single LED, but it doesn't bother me that much.
