Yeah, I went looking for this as well, lower court ruling only and I can't see how this will hold up on appeals.

it likely wouldn't, which is why I was clear to say current legal precedence goes in favor of forcing you to unlock the device. Not that there is any law that currently requires it. If it were to go to a higher court I personally feel it would never be upheld, however it hasn't reached a higher court yet, and do YOU want to be the person who has to lawyer up and become that higher case in a court of appeals?

Yah obviously that legal precedents were in my mind when I asked the question, though not exclusively. Thank you for the confirmation on authentication method.

Are the battery stats significantly better than the S6? If so, what was the magic besides a slightly bigger battery?

You can get a full day unlike the S6. I find battery life stock to be slightly worse than my previous Note 4 running a custom ROM.

No ideas why besides Samsung getting a handle on software issues from prior lollipop versions and the bigger battery.

I know the display is 20% less power usage than the Note4 display, but not where sure that puts its power draw compared to the S6 display and if it's any better or worse.

Got an update today to the Samsung Pay app which also required a small AT&T update.

I was now able to add my Citi consumer cards and AMEX Blue Cash card. Wasn't able to add my Citi business card or my Sallie Mae card yet - on either Samsung or Android Pay.

Still - the cards I was able to add are my primary cards so I'm happy.

AT review is up, very "meh" review and definitely not worth the wait. Nothing useful about Samsung pay, no new insight, clearly written by someone who is getting paid by the hour/article.

And is that the band of an Apple Watch I see in one of the pics?

I was more surprised that unlike prior Anandtech reviews, I learned nothing new that isn't known or covered to death in other reviews. Best screen, good build, best Android performance, best or close to best camera, toned down TW, only phone serious about a stylus.

On one hand, the internals being very close to the S6 means they didn't have to rehash it (that was a educational review BTW). Instead of tiredly repeating "basically the same as the S6" with a lack of enthusiasm, I was hoping they'd focus on stuff that only they can do compared to enthusiast sites:

- How is the display power draw compared to the S6 and Note 4. What's the ongoing cost of the size difference. How does it scale across APL and brightness. How are AMOLEDs continuing to improve?
- Spend more time into the throttling differences between the S6 (though in fairness this is Andrei's area of expertise)
- How does fast wireless charging work - this is the first phone with it
- Samsung Pay - use it and determine if it is a real differentiator + how does the MST tech work
- Why is real world battery life so much better than the S6

But alas it was nothing special.

Yah a "Deep-dive" into power consumption seems to be Mr. Frumusanu's expertise. Since he conducted in-depth analysis on the Exynos 7420 and recent AMOLED displays not too long ago, I do not expect to see another one so early.

I think the Note 5 review was in-depth, especially in the camera department. There is one glaring issue of backtracking on browser benchmark (using Chrome instead of default browser) but other than that I have found the review useful. The reviewer occasionally "blurts out" out-of-the-blue statements without preparing readers with contexts, and I think those strange statements are what offends suspicious readers. (I have participated in the comments section and that is the impression I get) Whether those are the author's style or Freudian slips is another matter.

The S6's battery life has been more than fine for me. I get ~5hrs SOT, albeit without much background syncing because I have yet to move all my stuff over. I expect to get approx. 20% more use out of it once I apply my usual tweaks. I am convinced that carrier-related issues (bloats, updates, snooping, etc.) are what ruins the battery performance and performance in general for Samsung devices and that is the next hurdle Samsung should overcome along with streamlining Touchwiz.

Bump. Anyone have any comments on the audio quality through the headphones? I see that they've gone back to using a Wolfson DAC, which has me fairly interested. Most of my music is FLAC, gonna be used primarily with a Westone W30 with some UE TF10 action at work.

Thinking of picking one up as an upgrade to my Note 3 - relative needs a new phone and I figured I might as well get something new and give them the Note 3. My last 3 phones have been Notes (1, 2, and now 3) so I'm strongly leaning towards the 5 right now, if only out of familiarity. I've read through the entire thread and the people who actually have one seem to be pretty happy with it, with material gains in the camera and multitasking departments. The main complaints seem to be, as expected, the lack of removable battery (don't care about that) and SD slot (disappointing, but I can live with it).

Oh yeah - anyone have any glass screen protector recs? I've read about the halo effect, and some ebay sellers seem to have addressed that, but it'd be nice to check first. Would be slapping a Spigen Slim Armor on it, so if mnewsham has any comments on that, I'd appreciate it. Thanks y'all.

I've been using it since I got it about a week after I got my Note5. Had no issues with it, and for the price I am very happy. Only real complaint is the kickstand is plastic and not metal, but it still manages to hold the phone just fine, so not a huge deal, especially for ~$14.

Dont use a screen protector so not sure about that.

Audio quality is very good, gets decently loud even using my nicer headphones which I generally use an amp with. I dont play FLAC as it just takes up too much space for me to bother with generally, but I imagine it wouldnt sound any worse than the 320kbps mp3s I have.

Does it feel strong enough to withstand a short drop here and there, without adding too much thickness/weight? Is the kickstand removable?

I don't intend on using my better audio setups with the phone, too much hassle imo.

Thanks for your input, really appreciate it. Would be interested if you've got any further niggles or qualms about it as well.

I have dropped it a few times from ~2-3ft onto the floor and its just fine, I wouldnt want to drop it much further or directly on the corner, but short drops seem to be fine with this case. I dont think the kickstand is removable, it may be, but I dont want to remove it to find out it isn't :p

No real qualms with the phone, I just hope samsung doesn't take too long on the android M update.

Any Note5 owners, specifically on VzW, have issues with network connectivity? Over the last few weeks, it has gotten increasingly worse where I have to reboot 2+ times a day to get my connection back.

Just curiosity on my part... do you have to reboot to get it back, or does cycling airplane mode on & off do anything?

I've tried everything short of a reboot to get it to work. Airplane, turning of mobile network, wifi, bluetooth, NFC, HD calling, yelling at it :) I'm sitting under a tower basically so I know it's not a signal issue. My work S5 just did 110/30 on speedtest.net for example.

I have a VZW note 4 that does this a lot. Usually putting it in and out of airplane mode fixes it. I am pretty confident that this is a VZW issue as all my previous VZW phones did this.

Interesting

The only reason I asked was I have the rare occurrence of something similar on my Note 4 (AT&T) but I'm able to get out of it by going in and out of airplane mode. No idea what causes it and it's pretty rare, but it might be a similar thing which would point towards a Samsung issue.

I'm going to run by the local store and see if they can swap the phone out. Going out of town for 10 days and need a working phone. Had my S5 since it was launched and never had network issues, just all the other problems with lag and battery :(

Probably the best idea, especially if it's getting worse.

Not much help but I've had no connectivity issues with my AT&T variant.

--------------

So I've had some up and downs with my fingerprint scanner - it seemed to initially work great and then seemed to get worse over time. Deleting and readding fingerprints helped but it got worse again.

So for the third time a couple weeks ago, I deleted them all and did the following:

- Added 2 fingers twice
- For each read I left my finger on for a second (vs the quick taps I was doing in prior setups). Did the normal slight variants of angle and position during the reading process.

Since then it's been close to perfect - probably 98% success rate. I do think the shape of the button makes initial setup more important vs. the iPhone so if you're having problems, give it a go and be very intentional on how you setup your fingerprints.

Got my free wireless charger in the mail yesterday. I was expecting 3-6 months or some crazy wait time since it was free from the samsung pay promotion. But I wont complain about a couple of weeks.

Works great, it's not the fast charger so it does take a little while, but I generally am just using it to top off my battery, not for a full 0-100 charge. (at least so far)

Wireless charging built in is one of the few things Samsung got right with this generation. Pretty much the only thing I missed going back to a Note 4. Now I have a Droid Turbo 2 with Qi and it works just fine with my Samsung puck.
