Just saw The Verge's latest Top Shelf show. Patel mentions that the screen of the Galaxy Note 2 on the table was very very green "because it was AMOLED" and the host just nods. Samsung is giving OLED a bad name. Seriously, SONY, come out with an OLED smartphone with your white pixels and save us from the garbage of Samsung. Or license it to AUO or even Samsung so that people can see what OLED is really capable of. Seriously, OLED from SONY and AU Optronics is vastly superior to the stuff Samsung has in their galaxy phones.

It's around the 10:30 mark.

I'll take a 15lb smart phone with a 4" CRT, sadly nobody will ever make such a beast.

SONY has tech for white OLED pixels, something Samsung does not have access to.

I would be interested in seeing one of these displays. I'm not going to lie I detest OLED, but the only thing I've seen it on was Samsung phones, and I hate the display of every single one of them. purple or blue'ish whites make a phone unusable for me. It's worse than input lag. But to be fair to Samsung I always have a custom theme on my phones that's pretty much 99% white. I suppose with a black halo theme I'd have less gripes with OLED.

You can find an AUO OLED screen in the HTC One S. I don't know who else they're making panels for. As for SONY, they make their own OLED screens but, right now, only for their professional monitors and other crazy expensive applications. But SONY may be coming out with an OLED smartphone in the near future. I just wished they didn't take their sweet time like they always do.

I loathe OLED panels. The ones Samsung uses just makes for a terrible white balance. I did however once encounter an OLED that had a decent white balance and that was the Razr Maxx HD.

Damn Dari you are on another level you should change your title to Samsung's newest oled in the gs4 is a game changer in screen technology and is the benchmark to beat.

It amazes me how far you go out of your way to hate Samsung so much.

BTW the gs4 has better white balance then any cell phone screen ever tested.what do you have to say about that oled screen?

If it looked good it was probably from AUO. But it could've been Samsung, not really sure. However, considering that Motorola uses Elpida for memory and Sandisk for NAND, I'm thinking that it's an AUO screen since they're not married to Samsung for those two other components.

Nonsense. Go see for yourself. Put the S4 screen running google.com up against any proper LCD. (iPhone 5, Z10, HTC One, etc.) At full brightness on both you'll see how much whiter the LCD panels are.

Leave them alone. It's kinda nice to have them all gathered in a single thread actually.

I gotta admit I get a laugh out of these hate threads appearing basically weekly.

Yeah, and you put any LCD next to an AMOLED and you will see how much blacker the AMOLED is.

Truth be told, no screen technology is perfect for everything.

I would rather have muted whites than gray blacks. Muted whites are a bit easier on the eyes anyway.

People like you are what's wrong with the world. Always satisfied with the status quo. You should encourage your employer, Samsung, to make better OLED screens to shut the "haters" up instead of defending them.

I absolutely would not. Reading against a poor white background is an atrocious experience.

If you prefer OLED, so be it. But for my needs and many others LCD is a far superior choice.

I honestly haven't had any problem with AMOLED, its a lot better than the old AMOLED found on the SII, my Note 2 looks great and whites are fine, blacks and colors are amazing.

To each their own, this is why Android is awesome. You have a choice, and you vote with your dollar.

If AMOLED was so bad, the Galaxy series of phones would not be the most popular Android phones on the market.

It could be because they're marketed heavily, not unlike iPhones?

Wow, just cause you don't like them, doesn't mean they are bad. Geez.

I prefer SAMOLED universally over LCDs. A lot of the time I prefer my old crappy pentile Gnex to my current Nexus 4. Which calibrated by the way. The blacks are just so bad on LCDs. You can fix the whites on SAMOLED display with some calibration. But you can't fix th blacks on an LCD. SGS4 has excellent white levels and perfect black levels. So what more could you ask for?

Honestly I think a lot of it is ignorance. I've pointed out the difference to any of my work or personal friends who have Galaxy phones and they either didn't care or were surprised. I've actually switched a few people over to IPS phones after showing them the difference.

I really think IPS panels are superior for most consumers. But it doesn't matter. Samsung is selling OLED screens like crazy. I should also refrain from crapping on OLED because it has its defenders online. For my needs it's IPS or bust. That's why I'm getting the G Pro.

The evidence is there. Whether you can understand the graphs is up to you. The ONE looks to have the coolest display of them all. Excluding the terrible Nexus 4.

The SGS4 and Note 2 are pretty even with the iphone. Yet, everyone praises the display on the One. Funny thing is, those same people praise the SGS4 and Note 2 as well. So I don't know what you guys are on about.

For regular people it is easy to sway them either way based upon what you show them:

Show them a webpage with a white background on the AMOLED : "Oh you are right that white sucks the other one is better."

Show them a picture of flowers on the AMOLED : "Oh you are right the colors on the other screen are so dull compared to this, this one is better."

I wonder how many people actually enjoy reading black text on white backgrounds at full brightness? The only time that's useful is in direct, bright sunlight. Which begs the question, how many people are truly using their phones for long stretches under direct sunlight? I would confidently bet very little.

Doesn't the S4 have one the better whites tested? It's no secret that LCDs are brighter so if you have to do a side by side, full brightness comparison than the OLED screen will look darker or not-as-good. The exact same thing will happen when you put two LCDs of differing brightness side by side. Most people don't run at full brightness, and I feel that the lower brightness of OLEDs are only really apparent in side-by-side comparisons. I generally don't see people complain about that it in every day use. For me personally, having true blacks are much more important. In dark rooms, seeing a grey rectangle where there should be total blackness is a very noticeable thing, especially when reading eBooks with white text on a black background.

I absolutely would not. Reading against a poor white background is an atrocious experience.

It's funny you should say that, because reading on a full white background isn't that pleasant after a while. That's why many forums, like our own AnandTech's here, opt for a slightly darker tone.

I actually really like my GS2's screen. After close to 2 years of use, the screen has gradually become less blue and looks more natural. It's a pleasure to have a phone screen that I can read in bed at night while my wife is sleeping and not ruin my night vision or wake her up - just apply a 90% screen filter.

LCD's just don't get dark enough.
