Why do you say so? DLP has, with the possible exception of LCoS, the best performance in bright light of any RPTV technology.

Anything that uses reflective technology is going to get washed out if there's ambient light in the room. The reflective tech I've seen is from SONY (can't think of what they call it at the moment), but even that was so so as compared to a plasma or an LCD.

Well I went to another CC to take another look, they didn't have this 720p model on display but they did have the 1080p.

Our Westinghouse 32" LCD is 6 months old and the 1080p was gorgeous, so I passed on this hot deal.

I'm both happy and sad.

RossMan, why not get it through Circuit City? Looks like that link you provided has it on sale for $1800

It was through CC.

I've decided to hold off since 1) it wasn't hot enough (by my standards at least) and 2) 1080p is the way to go.

What's so great about 1080p? I haven't really noticed a difference between 1080i vs 1080p, especially at the price difference.

This deal was for 720p (1280x720) instead of 1080p (1920x1080). The 1080p Samsungs cost about $500 more than the 720p models.

No. At this point. I would wait for a TV that is capable of producing an image in 1080p as opposed to 1080i. Give it a year and 1080p displays will be down enough in price.
Does it have an HD tuner?

Honestly, I can't see how much better things could get with 1080p. At 1080i, programing looks like you're looking out a window (on HDNet, TV looks almost 3D!) I'm thinking this is going to be a "S-Video cable doesn't look as good as component video" debate.

To me, it is a non-issue right now. These 1080p nuts can get back to me when 1080p is widely used in HD programming.

Aren't all HD-DVD and Blu-ray movies mastered at 1080p? I don't know if you're planning to get one or both next-gen disc players, but if you are getting HD-DVD/Blu-ray I'd say go for 1080p.

That is true. If one is planning on buying his/her collection all over again and going with either HD-DVD or BLu-Ray then sure, they should get a 1080p TV.

I will agree with that.

Netflix will be carrying the discs for rental at no extra charge, so if you use netflix you can enjoy the HD high-bitrate goodness without paying $20+ per disc.

I'm thinking I'll buy a 1080p Samsung this year, then get a PS3 with its "free" blu-ray after the first price drop, or even at launch if there are enough good blu-ray titles to watch by Xmas.

We just got a 46" Samsung LCD tv the other day.. absolutley amazing quality and even the design is beautiful!
Of course the first thing I did was hook my laptop up to it before I even bothered to take the stickers off :) It may not be 1080p but it still looks great.

What sucks is that I can't get wireless in that room so no mega widescreen online gaming for me.

If you guys have the extra money and don't mind spending it then by all means go 1080p, I just highly, highly doubt you will notice a difference between 1080i and 1080p. And certainly when you're spending 400-500 bucks more in comparison. Just my opinion, you will be happy either way!

I haven't seen an 1080p signal yet however 720p looked great on my friends DLP. Hard to watch sports on my regular TV after viewing it on his HD.

You've said the same thing twice now.

And if he was comparing between a 1080i and a 1080p sets, it probably wouldn't make as big of a difference. But he's not. He's looking at a 720p and a 1080p sets, where there is a significant difference.

It was more of a general response than pointed towards RossMan

How about $2024.45 shipped to your door...

$1739.99 HLS5086W
- $75 Rebate
+ $229.90 for 3 yr warranty
+ $129.56
--------------------------------
$2024.45 delivered to your door

This is cheaper considering you won't have to pay tax (well, depends on the state your in). And more importantly, the deal is still valid. ;)

You can get the HL-S5086 from TVAuthority for a bit less with free shipping and even cheaper extended warranty.

There is currently a powerbuy on AVS forum at TVA for members. I think you can just register there for free and buy it. TVA is supposedly a highly regarded reseller.

I currently have on order the HL-S5687 for $2495.

Here's giving back to you a little for some of the hot deals you've gotten for me ;)

1080p and 56". I already have a 50" 720p RPTV (Panasonic 50LC13) and couldn't resist getting the bigger, higher resolution HL-S5687 for that price.

For people that say 1080i is no different from 1080p, I say they really need to look at true 1080p material. There is a huge difference.

Edit: Plus, my Panasonic has been really problematic for me. Its broken down 4 times already.
