Samsung Evo firmware

I recently heard there will be a new Firmware for the 840 Evo drives, OCT 15 maybe?. I went looking for Samsung Magician but couldn't find it. The website seems screwed up to when looking for a particular SSD model. What are people using to update their Samsung SSD drives?

You'll note that the firmware on that page for the 840 EVO is from last year. Update is rumored (confirmed?) to be on the way.

Non data destroying update I hope. Either way, it shouldn't matter. I plan on getting a 5th 1TB EVO to add to my array, so I'd have to rebuild it anyway.

Nothing yet. 11am EST

When I did the Samsung Magician install earlier this week I did get a firmware update for my Evo. My current is EXT0BB6Q and still waiting for today's firmware release.

A few weeks ago, a Hackintosh installation with a 250gb 840 EVO drive started too became seriously slow/unresponsive. It seemed almost as if I had lost hardware acceleration for the UI, but games played fine. I didn't have time to waste reinstalling, so I decided to wait till Yosemite to do a fresh install.

I wish it were something related to this, though I reaaaally doubt it. I'll try to boot windows and update the firmware, see if it fixes it.. Hope I can do it via Windows without formatting also.

You're looking in the wrong place. The new EXT0CB6Q firmware is only accessible with the 840 EVO performance restoration software from the download page.

I've never measured the performance of my Evo with their Magician software, so I don't know if mine is on the downward slope. I wonder what the difference is between the latest Evo firmware and the one offered with the Performance Restoration.

If you just got your SSD in the past month (which I'm guessing since you only recently installed the 6BQ firmware), you likely haven't seen any degradation yet. It would be more of a drop than a slope if you saw it since it's dependent on access age. At minimum, the new firmware is supposed to protect the drive from future degradation. The performance restore won't be so relevant to you, but you will want the firmware.

They've called it a read issue but it's usually seen in real-world applications. In the Magician software my seq writes were cut in half, they're back to normal with this fix.

I installed it over RDP but it shut down the system rather than reboot it. I'll have to verify the fix after I get home from work.

I haven't used the rig it's in for 6-9 months. So I should install it anyways?

Does the update work on drives in RAID-0?
From the accompanying user manual:

8) If RAIDmode turns on in SATA configuration, It is not supported by Samsung
Performance Restoration and DOS application.

I'll have to try each drive in AHCI mode and then see if I can enable RAID and have the array operating afterwards. It's no biggie if I need to rebuild it.

From what I remember earlier reports stated nearly all Samsung 840's were affected. Seems like this current firmware is for 840 EVOs only. Perhaps the regular 840 firmware will come later, if they are even affected at all.

Nope. The drive also needs to be initialized with a drive letter under Windows for the program to run, so you have to destroy your raid to run the update. I had to restore my OS back onto a new raid after updating each drive in Windows on another machine.

Yeah, I had to do that. I can restore from a backup pretty easily over night.

The five 1TB EVOs are taking about 20 minutes each for the update. I'm on the 3rd drive so far.

Bit leery but might try it, mine are in RAID 0 in a pretty non standard thing.

Magician won't even run right I ripped that out long ago.
