Yeah, I bought a Captivate off Craigslist a few days ago just to play around with but also preparing myself for the move to ATT(I'm on Tmobile with a HD2).
Then I got to unlock the phone just a couple of days ago and been using it with Tmobile service.(My HD2 is feeling very lonely right now).
This is absolutely the best smartphone I've ever had.
It look so sleek and its so damm fast.
4" inch screen, super thin and even ligther than the iphone.
I don't miss the 4.3" screen from my HD2 to be honest.
They just need to fix the GPS and I do miss not having a flash though.
LOVE this phone.

Yeah, I'm about to call Tmobile and get them to exchange my HD2(mine has a couple of small nicks on it) has for a new one so I can unlock it and put it up on Craigslist.
Should be able to get $250-$300 for it.

Got my samsung captivate last night. I have never used a smartphone before and this whole deal is new to me. I got it rooted and installed the lagfix in about 10 minutes last night and downloaded a bunch of apps and I am completely and totally blown away. Everything about this phone is incredible. Well 50% of my amazement is with how awesome android is and the other 50% is on the raw hardware of the captivate. I can't stop playing with it and it really feels like the possibilities are endless with this thing.

I do have one question about the battery life though. My phone has been unplugged for just under 8 hours and my battery is down to 27%. I don't know if I should be worried or not. I've been playing with the phone off and on all day, and I would say the display has been on for a solid 4 hours as i've been downloading apps and what not. I've had wifi and gps off for most of the day but I have been playing with those as well for an hour or two.

I've been reading that the battery life seems to start out bad for most people but gets better as time goes on. The fact that I've really been playing with it so much makes it so I'm not too worried about the battery, but I'm just curious as to what's happening with others.

yes, it should get better. also download the 'smoda' widget and turn off data, that'll help. lowest brightness, gps off, BT/wifi off. also installed taskiller and learn how to use it. setcpu wouldn't be a bad idea to underclock it when the screen is off.

doesnt seem too bad for using your display for that long and doing all that stuff. Search around xda forums and android forums for tips how to extend battery life.

Id say make sure you:
-flash to JH2, i think its helped out a bit in my case.
-Use wifi when its available, change the wifi sleep policy to never, and uncheck notify when a network is available. Then make sure you switch it off when your not in a wifi area.
-place the power control widget on one of your screen so you can
*turn the screen all the way down when it doesnt matter (helps a lot)
*keep GPS off when not in use (i never turn mine on-doesnt work anyway) plus ive heard GPS kills the battery more than the display.
*toggle wifi and Bluetooth- even though theyre in your notification bar
-keep an eye on how many different apps/widgets update - 3G uses a lot of battery
-live background use more than regular
-bright colors use more energy than black, and red uses then than others http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/03/nexus-one-sees-red-nearly-doubles-battery-life-video/
-a screen that is on but is all black uses almost no battery. - same on all AMOLED screens
-switch from 3G to edge (i never do this but ive heard it helps)

I was also told to "break in" the battery by letting it run all the way down once or twice and then charge it while its off until full. they also said this

"Hi *******, I understand your concern regarding battery life on your Nexus One device. The following steps should significantly extend the battery life on your phone. Please connect the phone to the charger with the phone powered on, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green, indicating the device is fully charged. Disconnect the phone from the charger, and power it off. Reconnect the phone to the charger with the phone powered off, and allow the phone to charge until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone from the charger and power it on. Once the phone is powered completely on, power it off again and reconnect it to the charger until the notification LED is green. Disconnect the phone, power it on, and use it. You need to use this sequence only once. If the issue of battery life on our phone persists, I recommend you contact our HTC accessory department directly."

Hope i helped. The biggest thing i miss about my BB is the insane battery life, but by doing most of this stuff i get much more life out of my battery.

GPS is so broked lol... Went on a 1200mile trip from MN to NY..

50% of the time it would loose Sat. signal and the other 40% it was okay, then the rest of the 10% it would think your fone is off on some side road when I was on the main highway.

My GPS works fine. I rarely use it but the times I have used it, it worked flawlessly. Now, this GPS fix, I take it this will be an OTA push. If so, will we have an option to NOT get the update since I'm not having problems with my GPS? If not, and I do get the update, and for whatever reason it breaks my working GPS what then?

you know...I hate you guys. My GPS was fine until I came into this thread. Tasker would automatically turn and on off my bluetooth, wifi, ringer...until I read this thread. Now it only works like 20% of the time.

If you havent already, flash the mobileap hotspot pulled from international galaxy s. Much better than wifi tether and barnacle. It's faster and creates infrastructure instead of adhoc connection.

I just got my Galaxy S, and I was also worried about battery life.

I downloaded a program from the Market Place called, Advance Task Killer.

It lists all the programs that are running in the background. Even the ones that are not listed under the "applications" in settings.

It's a great program for three reasons, it's really easy to use, killing programs you're not using will increase your battery life, and the phone runs a lot "smoother" when it's not multitasking as much.

Don't run task killer. It's not needed and will slowdown your phone and cause problems. Just make sure you exit programs properly. I ran advanced task killer all the time when I had my MT3G. That phone needed it because of the limited memory and slow processor. Galaxy S does not.

See, I read that the program might slow down your phone, yet I've tested it and on my phone and it seems to speed it up. Other people saw the same result as myself.

And yes, you could always just shut down the program properly. Easy to forget while on the run with your phone.

Anyways, Advance Task Manger does help you keep track of the running programs, easy to shut them off and and in the long run, that will help you save battery power.

But, I guess it doesn't work the same on every phone?

People should test it out,.. see if it's what they're looking for.

GPS works fine for me with Captivate so far. I just fire up GPS Test first, within seconds I usually get locked onto 6-10 satellites (Wireless assist is off), then go into Google Maps and locates me within seconds.

Now, if I don't go to GPS Test first, I don't usually get a lock in Google Maps.

By the way, is anyone else feeling a bit... jealous after the Apple event today. Why can't Android get games from Epic and other studios... I want some crazy games on Android too! Is that enough to make me swap for a iPhone though, nope ;)

Is GPS test an app or is it included in the Captivate ??
