Thanks for the tip. I don't understand half the settings I changed, but I did them too and it really improved the GPS on my Captivate. I just got it today, but coming from my 4-yr old LG VX8300 (stop laughing at me), I think this thing is incredible. Sure, I only have limited time on it, but I haven't had any reboot or lagging issues.

lol the captivate is awesome and i've only had it for less than 24 hours.

I've finally fixed the GPS as well:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732030

And I use:

Second suggested setup (from other posts and claimed to have great results):
SUPL/CP Settings/SErver FQDN Type/Custom Config
Application settings/Operation Mode/MS Based
SUPL/CP Settings/Server/supl.google.com
SUPL/CP Settings/Port/7276

Accuracy - 30
SkyHook - On

Then you have to reboot, and make sure GPS is turned on. I turn mine on using the power control widget.

Captivate >>>>>>>>>>> iPhone 3G by miles.

I have to say something.

This will NOT fix your GPS. All it changes is your AGPS settings, which is an artifical remedy. At best, you'll notice your improvements for a few days, after which it will get worse. I highly recommend reading through XDA Captivate forums and seeing what people do say.

Slap that super amoled screen on a droid x and then you've got a real phone. Because the only thing worth salvaging on that Captivate is the screen. The rest is garbage.

The hummingbird is actually decent. I think it's a tad better than the OMAP on the Droid X. However, I think the X has a dedicated GPU, where the Samsung, I forgot if it does or not.

The processor, gpu and (though some will disagree) the display are nice; the problems (from what I have read) are with the software and possibly the bus (memory/device access).

The gps (from what I read; there is a link in this thread) is that the configuration is incorrect and if you change it from the service menu it will work - this is very different than turning on wireless location (which is mostly useless for general usage).
-
From my first hand observations (in stores only) the screen is very nice for movies but not quite as sharp/clear as the evo/droid x. Unfortunately I have not used any of them outside in the sun so I don't know how badly they wash out. The droid x has some nice aspects but unfortunately the volume issue is a killer for me (there is 'talk' of a software fix but there has been other 'talk' that this is a hardware or assembly issue). While the EVO has the slowest processor (not by a lot) and slowest gpu (by quite a bit) of the three overall it seems the best phone (to me). However I personally favor the galaxy s form factor (particularly the captivate - the hump on the vibrant is in a bad location; the droid x hump does not bother me but the edges are a bit sharper; the evo is ok but a bit bulky being the thickest and heaviest of the three). We won't talk about battery life here since there is a bit of misinformation out there with regards to exactly how the three devices perform.
-
Anyways I think it is all about compromise. Right now I am leaning towards the evo but if it takes more than 2 months for me to decide there will be something newer and better. I suspect that for the next 2 years the android smart phone will see huge leap in form factors, software and options.

The Samsung Galaxy S has a PowerVR SGX 540 which is the fastest gpu currently available in a smartphone.

The Galaxy S phones are the fastest phones out right now.
Look at the benchmarks. Stock, they benchmark lower than the Droid X and Nexus 1, but with the LagFix, they absolutely destroy anything else out there.

I found another annoying problem, I can't connect to my office's WPA2-Enterprise wireless network (PEAP-MSCHAP v2). Well, it says it connects, but it doesn't seem to transfer any data.

I've Googled what I've could; it sounds like this is an issue with Android and not necessarily the phone, and it sounds like a solution is out there if you root. But I'm really not sure. Anybody else have insight to this?

My personal wireless (WPA) works fine.

Funny, because all the things you said, I don't experience on my Captivate. But I did experience them on my JB 3Gs that backgrounds things just like an Android device does. No matter what you want to think, the iPhone still doesn't do proper multitasking. Doesn't matter, because my coworker gets pissed at his iPhone at least 4 times a day, complaining about battery life or not being able to turn his 3G off, or even pick up a new signal after activating it.

And about the screen, I'm sorry but you're full of it. The pixel density is *slightly* more, but there is absolutely no way it's as bright.

Hmmm maybe you have issues with your 3gs because it wasn't designed, doesn't have the power to run multiple apps.

You apparently missed the " " around running. I know it doesn't actually do multitasking and I DON'T CARE.

Ummmm battery life???? Seriously the Samsung has the worst battery life of any smartphone out. If not the worst it's close and nowhere near the iphone 4G.

Maybe your coworker is a douche? Getting "pissed" at inanimate objects is being a douche.

How many times does your coworker "activate" his/her phone? Me. I only activated it once.

Indoors or just out of direct sunlight the iphone 4G display is better overall. Much sharper text, colors may not be as saturated but at least they don't look like someone gone crazy with PS. Unrealistic, oversaturated color is worse than "real" color.

Oh, and of course just about every Samsung phone ever made is a physically a piece of crap and won't last a year.

But my Samsung washing machine is DA BOMB!

Keep it in check, no need to troll

I just picked up a Captivate from Craigslist for $325.
Gorgeous phone.
Funny thing, when lining up with my HD2, its pretty much the same dimension except noticeably thinner and much lighter.
With that said, I can imagine Samsung being able to easily fit a 4.3 screen on the same form factor.
4.3" screen, add flash and combine with the current internals would make this a super phone.

- BTW, so I don't have ATT service right now and it won't let me access the Android market. Anyway to bypass this by using just WIFI ??
Originally when I first got the phone I was able to access the market briefly and downloaded 2 apps before getting denied.
I then did a hard reset and now, it won't even let me sign in.

Check out the XDA forums. ALso, you may need to add the Andriod web service to your AT&T service.

Never mind false alarm.
Seems that Android market was having problems yesterday.
I've been downloading all kind of apps today through just wifi.

It wasn't just me.
It was the Market having problems.

are there any announced plans to enhance the Exchange integration on the Captivate?

I'm currently on a BB with BES at work that "just works" for email, calendar, and contact syncing. I'm eligible for an upgrade on ATT and would like to go with an Android device like the Captivate, but if the Enterprise Messaging is lackluster I will need to go with an iphone4.

Any insight/help is appreciated.

Now you can unlock the Captivate by your self. The unlock code is inside the phone. Nice and easy.

Is there any point to this? If i'm with tmobile and sticking with tmobile?

Perhaps when I sell the phone? higher resell value?

Unlocked phones always have higher resell value and they are good for your travel abroad.

After using this phone rooted, I can say that you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands.

I haven't used the GPS yet, so I'm not sure if I need the fix. I'm going to set up tasker later on today, so we'll see.

Well I've heard of at least one person who cracked their screen and had to replace the glass.

i know they are very close to having a completely vanilla rom of android for the captivate, so the question should be - how is exchange integration on android. I know nothing about exchange, but if it works on the nexus one but not on the captivate, you can flash a completely vanilla rom and it should be the same as the N1. Someone correct me if im wrong.

What do you use exchange and enterprise messaging for anyway? (sorry im a complete noob when it comes to this. I can only remember that i used exchange to sync my google contacts when i had an iphone for like a month.)

EDIT: i just read somewhere that 2.2 adds full exchange integration.
