I love this phone, but only after I put Unleash The Beast on and did Lag Fix 2-3. Now it is very fast, only seen lag very rarely.

Unleash The Beast http://www.peteralfonso.com/2010/08/unleash-beast-v02-samsung-captivate.html

Lag Fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=749530

Be warned the lag fix is debatedly a long term corruptor. Wireless tether in unleash the beast might not work but there's a fix on page ten of the support thread. I did get a random restart once but I think that's because dolphin hd is buggy.

If this phone had a higher res like 960x540 and a great browser, it'd be really amazing.

If you don't think flash is important to you then be it but lets not exagerrate on the purpose of flash.
Purpose of LED flash is not to make your pic better. Its when you are at a a dark place like bar or club and you just need to snap a pic.
Its doing its job when you can actually see faces on a pic vs. nothing but darkness.
And the range of flash is about ~5 feet, not 1 foot.

Night Mode. And I've never had a phone's LED flash be good for 5 feet.

i'm loving this phone more and more every day. installed unleash the beat. didn't install lag fix as it runs fine for me. haven't had one gps problem. locks on quickly. love the droid x keyboard for it.

MUST HAVE WIDGET: SMODA widget. turns 3g off(turns data off period, can still text and call). it gave me HUGE battery performance. had at least 75% battery after being on the lake all day up until about 2 hours ago. facebooked, messaged all day. medium to high bright settings. just turned the SMODA widget on and off as i needed it.

must have.

? looks interesting though. Do you know if 3G automatically turns off when you're on Wifi?

Vibrant has the option without an extra widget.

I do love my Vibrant.

Can't say I'm surprised. I have seen many many users on several forums complaining about the GPS and front buttons. I don't know who Samsung has working on their GPS but they need to be fired, like yesterday. Going back to the Moment Samsung's GPS hasn't been worth a damn. No one else seems to have issue with it, why do they?

This is their moment to shine. Samsung has a shitty reputation for not fixing issues with their phones. If they are going to make a serious move into the space they are going to have to change that and this is their chance. Hopefully they will get it fixed sooner than later.

Agreed, if you want to play in the high end smart phone arena these days, you're flagship product needs to launch without show stopping bugs and you've got to stand by your product for at least a while.

Moto and VZW, for all their faults, have released 4 updates for the Droid 1; 2.0.1, 2.1, 2.2 FRG01B, and 2.2 FRG22B. HTC&carrier have released at least one Android update for every Android phone they've built, or plan to release an update. We'll see how the GS phones pan out, a lot of people are watching them for their powerful hardware, top notch screens, open boot loaders, and easy root access. Might see some fantastic ROMs for them if Samsung addresses the lower level stuff that the community doesn't have the tools for.

I just went to the ATT store to check out the Captivate again. Their floor model couldn't even get a lock on location on Google Maps/Nav.

I'm still torn between the iPhone and Captivate...

went to Ratshack & they had a floor model with a sticker in place of the screen.. on to Costco.. they didn't even have one onhand.

I'm dumbfounded that a $199 phone ($89 with 2yr contract) can compete with the iPhone. Coming from the 'if it costs more, it must be better' camp, it's hard for me to reconcile that the Captivate is a valid competitor.

The captivate keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. Walmart.com is now selling it free after a $90 rebate. Ordered mine last week. Makes me wish I waited through the weekend.

A Captivate is $199 without a contract? Last I looked it was $499...?

Edit: it is $499. http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-pho...sku=sku4760319

So, Rob, why are you calling it $199? Is it available somewhere else for $200? At $200, I'm in. At $500, not so much. I'm an existing customer with AT&T still under contract and I can re-up for a phone in ~April '11.

I believe the Captivate actually retails for the same as the iphone without further discounts and such. I am, however, sad to say that I'm going to exchange the phone for an iphone at this time. The battery, Exchange email client, and some other nitpicks just about done it for me. I'll wait to see if Samsung fixes the GPS and what Froyo brings to the table. I figure I'll be on top($$ wise) anyways if I were to get the iphone 4 now and sell it in a few months and buy an Android phone at full price. It's just really sad because this is a really top notch phone that just wasn't quite ready for production yet.

Here at work we use Goodmail as our Android Outlook Exchange client. Reading all the complaints on the internal company website, it sounds like it's not perfect, but it's supposed to be better than the built-in client.

Walmart requires a minimum plan 🙁 If you're on a family plan or need the 900 minutes, it's a good deal though. Amazon will match it pretty soon though, is my guess.

If anyone has the Vibrant. i just rooted my Vibrant, got rid of most of the bloatware I don't use (Amazon mp3, Telenav, mobiTV, write and Go, slacker radio) and did the lagfix...wow...phone flies now...huge performance improvement...

Go to the phone page, and at the top where is says "narrow your selection", there is a drop down on the far right to show "choose purchase types". Drop down to "renewed 2 year contract".
Right now it is $89.99 with activation waived (saves you $18). If you go new customer, then you get it free after rebate.
