Samsung 912N, Samsung 710T, Samsung 710N

The Samsung 912N 19inch has been looking rather attractive to me since at my CompUSA they have it for $379.99 after rebates. THe problem is that I've never owned an LCD monitor and don't know how bad ghosting really is or how annoying it is; specifically on this monitors 25ms refresh rate. I've read reviews and they all say its fantastic with the 800:1 contrast ratio and it looks amazing.

The other problem is that I'm a gamer; I dont really play UT that much at all, instead I play games like HL:2, Halo, Jedi Academy, W3, a lot of other shooters, and a lot of RTS games.

I've been looking at the Samsung 710N/T for a while now. The 710N doesn't have DVI output and the image quality is less, but the 710T has DVI and the image quality is better; the problem with both of these is that the 710T is streching my price allocation which is around 400. The 710N costs around 369 at Newegg I think, and has very good reviews also.

One last little knack is that I want to impress my friends and neighbors with my monitor; the 912N doesn't have a DVI output or as high response time, but the image quality is 800:1 which is fantastic and while it may not be PERFECTLY ideale for gaming, it looks more impressive with its looming size and picture quality.

I dunno, sorry about the ranting; I'm determined to get the best one for the money I have right now. 😛

If you are a gamer, then you need a monitor with at most 16m/s response time. 12 m/s is pretty good for gaming. I think compusa has a 712N on sale for 250 after rebates. It has 12 m/s response time. THe down side is it does not have DVI.

Personally, I'd go for the 710T or 710N. I mean, the resolution will be the same, so I don't see a huge advantage to 19" over 17" LCDs. In choosing between those two, I don't think there will be a significant difference. The 710T will almost definitely be "better," but to quantify the degree to which it will be better, and if you care about that degree, is almost impossible.

Having said that, I'd probably get the 710N.

Best buy also has it on sale tomarrow for 250.

So the 912N wouldn't be a good choice? I went to the store and it looks really, REALLY beautiful. The only reason I wouldn't want to get it is because it has 25ms response time. But would it really be THAT noticeable? I dont always play FPS, I play a lot of different games. Plus the fact that the Samsung is 19 inches makes it really enticing. I don't know, I'm really torn between the 710T and this; they both look beautiful but now that I've seen the 912N in person, it looks very impressive...

Otherwise, I will get the 710T.

Im going out now to possibly get it with my mom; so any last minute thoughts on this? I've decided to go for the 912N, but that can easily be changed.

Wariogiant I have the 912 very nice LCD, I also game on it MOAPA, UT, NFSP,MOAS,etc I think its a very decent LCD for gaming I give it 8/10.

Post back what you think if you get it.

The 710T and 710N are the same screen, just the 710N doesn't have DVI.

As for the 712N, as far as I know, it's either the same screen as the above or almost the same thing. Just no digital either.

Personally I splurged for the 710T myself and I love it - digital is razor sharp, while VGA isn't quite as sharp. Ghosting is essentially nonexistant on this monitor.

But if you can find a good sale on the 710N, go for it. It's very close to the 710T in quality, and if you can save >$100 on the purchase, it's worth it.

Well I decided to actually go with the 710T and ordered it off Newegg. Should arrive in a few days due to their remarkable service, but the frustarating thing is I won't be able to use it till Christmas!! Grrrr. 😛 I hope I made the right choice; we'll see, and maybe I'll bring my review on here to. 🙂

There's no question you made the right choice. You got the best monitor of the 3 and will notice the difference vs analog (the 710T has both types of ports so you can compare the two if you want although the differences are best seen in a side-by-side comparison).

The only issue is if your wallet will forgive you 😉 .

Wariogiant:

You will definitely want to check for dead pixels when you get it. If you wait till Christmas, I'm not sure on Newegg's RMA policy. I did wait almost a month to RMA a mobo, but I don't know.

MILFs are off limits when they are blood related, even if she happens to be really hot. That's just the rules, man.

haha this thread is going OT real fast.

710 is ideal for gaming. doom3, farcry, sof2 looked razor sharp on it. Was running it with 6800ultra with dvi out.

🙂

Wariogiant,

You made the right choice. I bought the 710T, and have been using it to play Half-Life 2. It's awesome. The colors are crisp. I'm using the DVI input with my Radeon 9800 Pro on an Athlon64 3200+. Great framerates at 1280 * 1024.

I didn't have any dead pixels on mine. But I would take the advise from Farmer, and check it upon arrival. There are two programs I found that do a good job at helping you check your LCD panel. You can try LCDTest or Dead Pixel Detector. I ran both, although I think that LCDTest is a little better in that it cycles 5 colors, versus the 4 that DPD tests. LCDTest will cycle Black, Red, Blue, Green, then White. Whereas DPD will do Black, Red, Blue, and Green. What's fun with DPD is that you can input custom colors.

Good luck. You will definitely enjoy your 710T. It was a wise choice over the 25ms monitors, especially if you place alot of fast action games. Then again, that's in the eye of the beholder, in the sense that not everyone will be as sensitive to ghosting that is found on slower monitors.

Just got it today 2 days early! Very impressive. Came brand spanking new and all, couldn't open it to get a look at it yet, might do so tomorrow to check for dead pixels, otherwise, I'll open it on Christmas Day. 😀

I posted the following as a separate topic but thought I'd tack it on to this thread in case anybody re-checks it and has any info. Thanks.

I recently read a review (http://www.neoseeker.com/resourcelink.html?rlid=90344) of 17' LCD monitors that claimed that the samsung 710T is over all a better screen than the 710N.

I thought that the 710T was different from the 710N only because it has DVI input and that in all other respects it's the same monitor.

Furthermore, in Europe, where I'm currently located, Samsung also offers a 710TM which, through research on the web, I thought to be simply a 710T with speakers.

But now I'm thinking that perhaps the 710TM is an altogether different animal....and I'm about to buy one because in my market they don't import the speakerless 710T!

Does anyone out there have any knowledge of, or experience with, the Samsung SyncMaster 710TM?
There's only one paltry review of it out there on the web and even that one makes no mention of its relation to the 710T.

Any help/comments will be appreciated.

on the 912n,

I bought it like 2 weeks ago.

I have been waiting like 1.5 years for an lcd.

I do not game heavily.

The few games I do play like the gta series do ghost a bit with the 912n.

I wanted a 19' over a 17' with a decent warranty.

I probably should have gone with a digital connection versus the analog only.

I am curious how much better digital is in gaming.

good luck,

yazzz000
