They have a new app (iPhone only right now, unfortunately for me) that let's you scan the UPCs when you put the items in your cart, pay with your credit card through the app, show the e-receipt generated on your phone to the checker at the door, and out you go. No lines. No cashiers. No self-checkout lanes. Sounds great! I get a bit giddy just thinking about NOT having to stand in line there. Anyone tried it?

I like Sam's myself, but not buying an I-Phone to try it out.

Probably will be a common thing in a few years all over I imagine.

Cashiers will have the lowest theft. I don't see the point. I feel the added scrutiny isn't worth risking spending a day in jail because a minimum wage worker thought you stole something. I don't use the self-checkout because of how they glare at you like you're trying to steal constantly. So it seems pretty stupid to me.

OverVolt, I've never felt like the staff was suspecting me of anything, not at Sam's, nor at Costco. The only time anyone missed something it was the cashier, the checker caught it, I took care of it at the customer service desk, no one was upset. That was in Fort Worth at one of the Sam's, maybe things are different in your area.

Just got it at the Sam's Club here, used it a couple of times. It's great, scans the item fast and has been accurate. When done, press "check out" as you head for the door. The receipt checker at the door scans the barcode that comes up on your phone, then checks what you have in the cart.

Where the hell did you come up with that? Works great on my Android phone.... never a check out line again.

It works on Android? The Sam's Club site says it's only for iPhone. "Scan & Go is currently only available on iPhone, but an Android version is coming soon!" That's what I get for believing them. I will download and check it out next time I go. Thanks for the info. Looking forward to no more checkout lines.

i can't remember the last time i waited in line behind someone at sam's. there was always a free lane/self checkout around. costco on the other hand always had long lines even though nearly all the registers had a cashier.

I can't remember that last time I DIDN'T wait in line...... and half the time behind someone that has yet to master paying at the card reader machine.

Their job is to literally watch for theft and help people who suck at using the self-checkout.

You just aren't able to read people. Congrats I guess?

Oh please how snide. I was laughing at a meme the other day that said something to the effect of "Are we swiping or inserting the chip guys? would these damn card readers make up their mind so I stop looking like a fool in the checkout?"

So you either don't have a chip or shop at the same places over and over and are a jackass to someone who is shopping at a location new to them. Either way. Oh please how snide. If you complain about card readers I can't even imagine what else you complain about. Go ahead complain about me. I figure you will.

I've never seen our local one more than 3 deep, and it's usually pretty busy.

Normally 5 minutes tops.

The wife has an Android, I don't even bother with that for a phone. Maybe she can try it out next time.

But I do not like the idea of linking a bank account to Sam's really, we try to restrict things like that.

Read people? I know very well what their job is, but watching for theft doesn't automatically mean suspecting everyone of it. "Congrats" This is the kind of shit people do on fora that very few would have the nerve to do in person.

Probably more risk with bank cards swiping it in stores than in an app that only works inside the store. And if there is a problem, it is easily resolved by contacting the bank.

3 deep at the Sam's here is 10-15 minutes at best. As the only Sam's in 75 miles, people from all over shop there, and they heap their carts and floats high, to make the trip worth their time.

Oh, man. I got a huge laugh out of this.

This cannot be serious. Or maybe paranoia and guilt just comes naturally to some.

Seems like it could be handy if you're only picking up a few items. Any time I've left a Sam's Club, they don't do much more than a cursory scan of items in the cart to compare them with the receipt.

If you're scanning your own items that would have to become a detailed inspection. Which would have to be a PITA with a full shopping cart of smaller items. And wouldn't this potentially just create a line at the door on the way out? I'd just as soon stand in line at the checkout.

Nice try but I stand by what I said. Walmarts typically have high theft and if there were ever a self-checkout to avoid using its the walmart one. Maybe you're just transposing every self-check out with a wal-mart self-checkout. I'm pretty sure I saw someone walk out the front door with a TV once but I have no proof. These aren't wal-marts in terrible neighborhoods so you either just aren't very observant and are proud of it or you go to wal-mart less than you realize or something, but you basically have no right to laugh.

Generally speaking minimum wage workers don't swipe bank cards :/

I use the Walmart self-checkouts a couple of times a week, and I've never felt like someone was watching me to be sure I wasn't stealing. Sounds like you have some issues.

I was watching the watcher at wal mart the last time I used self checkout. I could have walked out with the entire store before that lump noticed. I just needed her to approve my beer and I had to go get her.

Probably an AA lifer.

One wonders how Walmart and other businesses that make a business model off of poor and cheap consumers will last when the income from their clientele evaporates from technology displacing their role in the economy.
