Oh please how snide. I was laughing at a meme the other day that said something to the effect of "Are we swiping or inserting the chip guys? would these damn card readers make up their mind so I stop looking like a fool in the checkout?"

So you either don't have a chip or shop at the same places over and over and are a jackass to someone who is shopping at a location new to them. Either way. Oh please how snide. If you complain about card readers I can't even imagine what else you complain about. Go ahead complain about me. I figure you will.
I don't know what their issues are, but too often the checker has to come around and "assist" the customer in using the CC machine. Or the can't follow the instructions "Do Not Remove Card" when using the chip function.

"We closely monitor these checkouts and update our systems to address theft, " a Woolworths spokesman said.
Which is no doubt doubly so for walmart which has a theft problem.

Although shops may think they are saving money by ditching staff in favour of automated systems, in fact, the amount of money lost through theft rockets after the introduction of self-checkouts.

Scanning items using hand-held devices or mobile phones was also fund to lead to errors. At the end of one shopping trip in a large supermarket researchers found that 10 per cent cent of items in a basket had not been scanned through genuine error caused by distraction because the ‘shopper is being asked to do too many things at once.’

Some supermarkets now carry out random audit checks and technology is being developed to tag items so that they set off alarms if they have not been scanned.

So just wait until you screw up and get into a fiasco one day. It saves 5 minutes boo hoo. As the problem gets worse retailers are going to crack down.

My opinion... it will not be long until the normalization of self-checkout leads to statistically increased theft and thus crackdowns on users of such technology. Which is why I still happily put up with the wait and go to a cashier.

Probably just all the smartphone use dumbing you down a bit. Not really thinking.

Our local Costco eliminated the self-checkout lanes. I don't know if that was done across all their stores or not.

I used it yesterday, worked fine except it couldn't connect me to the store when I was back where the tall shelves were. When I got towards the front of the store it was fine. Will definitely save me some time, the lines are always stupid long at my store, to the point where they take some people at the Verizon checkout.

But they weren't always so bad. They cut way back on cashiers and customer service, introduce this "app" and suddenly everyone thinks they just got the best deal ever.

I've only been going there for ~6 months, got a deal that included year membership, $20GC and some free items for $23. I mainly wanted it for the cheaper gas. But its always been bad since I've been shopping there. Not sure if I'll renew when my year is up, unless I can get another deal.
