here in NC there is a line item on our taxes that asks the monetary amount of purchases made from outside the state that you didn't pay sales tax - so that you can pay the 7% NC state tax applied to that amount.

yeah, like I'm going to put anything in that line.

Hey, this is not a Federal tax nor is it a Federal initative. It is a "State" tax. Blame the politicians at the state level.

Federal tax and sales tax would not be the same thing.

Logically, this is bad for online retailers: it will make them less competitive with B&M stores.
Good for B&M stores... they can compete better with the online companies for the best prices.

Amazon... when I looked, down .71 to 21.38 That's a 3.21% loss. If I had read this earlier, it would have been nice to short a couple hundred shares of amazon. A $5000 investment would have netted me a quick $161 profit minus commission.

Walmart... up .51 to 47.30.

btw... I thought there was a federal moratorium on collecting internet taxes.. Maybe I misunderstood it. I thought that meant that rather than "stores without a physical presence in a state don't have to collect taxes" it meant "stores without a physical presence are not supposed to collect taxes"

Or even if the federal government passes the law banning taxes on online purchases... are the states just going to do this agreement anyway, making the federal law pointless???

I wouldn't mind paying taxes so much if I knew the idiots collecting the money were actually putting it to good use...

If they charge according to the location of the E-Store, then why not locate were there is no Tax... Many of these Hardware sales sites have little to no brick and mortor... just relocate. What an advantage... 5% tax on $100 is $5 savings... Everyone else will be charging $5 tax AND shipping...

Having no sales tax is what has helped Ecommerce become what it is today. I'm not saying Taxes will destroy Ecommerce, but it rediculous to by off the internet if you can just buy it down the road, and not have to pay shipping now...

There is a reason that half of all Fortune 500 companies are based in Delaware, you know.

So what about Catalog sales then? If we purchase something from a Catalog (from a store which does NOT have an establishment in your state), you're not charged sales tax.

Granted, we buy more online, but we do call often as well....So if we call, it's not really an internet purchase right?

Like if I'm at Sony Style physically (which currently only exists in CA and NY), purchase something and ship out of state, I don't pay tax. Can we use phone orders in a similar fashion?

There is an online petition to stop this. I have signed it already but have forgotten the website. I will update later when I get home.

I'm fine with sales tax, but income tax is a joke. They take my hard earned money out of my paycheck before I even get my check. :disgust:

all of us living in states with sales taxes are already obligated to pay sales tax on internet purchases. the issue here is about enforcement. soon, most retailers will be collecting sales tax because they are forced to.

the prospect of a bill prohibitting sales tax on internet charges is ridiculous. it'll never never happen. would that be fair to a local brick and mortar that competes with online stores? no. will sales tax ever go away? no. in fact, if gore or hillary get in there, don't be suprised to see a national sales tax.

the problem is that everyone says they want lower taxes, but then they get pissed at the hint of reducing one or more government programs. like now, everyone wants free medical coverage and prescription plans. then, these same people have the nerve to gripe about their taxes.

then, these same people have the nerve to gripe about their taxes.

I'd say they have a right to.

A good portion of their tax dollars are spent on programs other than Medicare, etc, with seemingly no oversight whatsoever.

Of course, if you like paying for $500 toilet seats, be my guest.

Just don't expect me to chip in for one.

were starting to pay for having a republican president. higher taxes. more expensive cigarettes. higher gas prices

What are you SMOKING?!?!

Bush has already lowered taxes once, and he's trying to do it again. Sales taxes are STATE items. Not federal, state! Did you even read the article?

Cigarettes have the same taxes (federally) that they've had for the past two years. The only federal cigarette tax increases that have occurred in the past 14 years have been under Clinton.

Gas prices (outside of California) are and have been stable for the past 2 years, barring any recent spikes due to Iraq concerns. Bush wants to open up more domestic drilling to LOWER gas prices.

Again, I have to ask. What are you smoking?!

Get 'em Jafco. Probably isn't smoking anything but tobacco, but is pissed that he has to pay higher taxes on it. I have found a way around that. DON'T SMOKE!!!

But to the Sales tax, haven't read all the posts, but we all knew it was coming, and might as well get used to it, and just focus on how much money you saved before this took effect. And if you don't like it, write your Reps, I know people don't think they listen, but make it known you are a voter, and if they get enough of those letters, I think we will see change.

Got a solution for ya,

VOTE REPUBLICAN! and you will see a whole lot more of it!!

You guys do know that by not reporting what you have purchased out of state in the past you are breaking the law? Most states have what is called a sales and use tax and have had them for some time. This is nothing new it is now just being enforced by the retailers because most people either don't know or don't care about their obligations to the state they live in.

sad
they don't realize one of the incentives to buying online was the taxfree purchase
now that they take it away, why not just get it from the store. that way you get your item instantly instead of fearing losing it in shipment or waiting weeks

i for one will not purchase anything from a site that charges me out of state sales tax
to hell with them

Catalog sales are still not taxed... and as a matter of fact, it is the language of the law that exempts these catalog sales that has been used for the moratorium of Internet taxes so far.

The current bills in Congress will simply extend the moratorium.

IMO, the incredible amount of wasteful spending by the Govt. in general gives reason for me to not support direct state-taxing of Internet transactions: If they can't spend my monies wisely now... I don't want to give them avenues in which they can take MORE of my money.

Click Here to contact your members of Congress and voice your support for Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act (H.R 49 and S.52).

Both of these bills are already in committee and will be discussed/voted-on soon.

looks like if I see Tax charged, that I will have to make my decision then, kinda sucks though, there will be no benefits to buying online unless they start offering everything with FREE shipping, time to start looking at local B&M stores it looks like.

Probably it is mostly large companies like Staples, BB, etc that already charge sales tax because they have a nexus (store) in your state ...
