Not a surprise that Montana didn't pass it...they don't have a sales tax in the entire state!!!

If they charge according to the location of the E-Store, then why not locate were there is no Tax... Many of these Hardware sales sites have little to no brick and mortor... just relocate.

The lazy ones - and MANY of them are lazy - won't relocate. i dont care how l3333t newegg is, they lose lots of sales in their home state because they never bothered to "place" their operation in a tax-free state, like Oregon.

Since WalMart and MArshall Fields etc all have physical stores in most states, then I don't see how they can NOT charge sales taxes. However, stores like NewEgg or googlegear prob won't have a problem.

I thought reducing TAX is Bush's main goal in his presidency, or is it just for the rich people?

There's still hope ! :p

Meanwhile, there's a move afoot in Congress to ban online sales taxes altogether. In January, Rep. Chris Cox, R-Calif., and Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., renewed their efforts to prohibit online sales taxes by introducing a bill that would turn the current moratorium into an outright ban.

This still only affects the states in which the online store has a presence. It changes the policy of stores like Walmart that were claiming that their online and B+M stores were separate entities.

you already pay a huge tax on internet sales -- it's called "shipping".

.

thats why we Hawaiians make sure we purchase from places like Amazon.com and Best Buy who offer their FREE SHIPPING offers to those of us in the middle of the Pacific.

What are you SMOKING?!?!

Bush has already lowered taxes once, and he's trying to do it again. Sales taxes are STATE items. Not federal, state! Did you even read the article?

Cigarettes have the same taxes (federally) that they've had for the past two years. The only federal cigarette tax increases that have occurred in the past 14 years have been under Clinton.

Gas prices (outside of California) are and have been stable for the past 2 years, barring any recent spikes due to Iraq concerns. Bush wants to open up more domestic drilling to LOWER gas prices.

Again, I have to ask. What are you smoking?!

Anyone have any good link as to why all the states... Especially California are all suddenly broke? I have been hearing a lot about the Bush administration having to do with this...

This is a Raw deal.

That it is.

These sites charging sales tax had best make it apparent during the checkout process, or they'll pay the price in chargebacks.

Probably a combination of the economic downturn, and the States picking up more of the bill for services the Feds used to reimburse them for.

Congress will be discussing and voting on these issues soon.

I like shopping on the Internet. New burdensome taxes and regulation on tech industries that have been heavily hit during our current economic slump is not something that would benefit anyone.

Keep Newegg alive!

Contact your elected officials and voice support for bills S.52 and H.R. 49, the Internet Tax Nondiscrimination Act of 2003.

The retailers you are refering to are ones that have STATE PRESENCE IN ALL STATES....thus they have a presence in your state and are required to take sales tax for that state.

If you think it's going to stop there you're delusional.

Those recent price spikes are due to George Bush having a rock solid hard-on for invading Iraq. If he wasn't standing behind a podium whenever he makes a public statement about Iraq, you'd see his hard-on tenting his pants. Gas used to be under $1/gallon less than 2 years ago. It's 50%+ more now.

Never occurred to me that Amazon.com would be a part of this. Wonder if it will include Amazon.ca which is a favorite place of many dvdtalkers to order dvds?
