Several large retailers this week began collecting sales tax on Internet purchases.
The move arose from an agreement among about 38 states and the District of Columbia that went into effect this week. The deal was struck last fall after states complained that they've been losing billions in tax revenue as online sales rise.

In exchange for signing onto the agreement, the retailers will not be held liable for back sales taxes they may owe, according to people familiar with the agreement.

Those involved would not say which retailers agreed to the deal, but retailers including Toys "R" Us, Wal-Mart and Target recently posted new policies on sales taxes. Amazon.com, which has partnerships with Target.com, MarshallFields.com and Mervyns.com to sell items online, notified customers of the change through a posting on its site.

Sales Tax is an indirect tax. Retailers are charged and in turn pass the fee on to the consumer. They really don't *have* to charge us but they all do...

The states have been crying about this all along. Now many states are broke (due to the economic slowdown and irresponsible spending) so they really want the money. Of course they rcan't stop spending all the money they don't have.

Watch these internet retailers take a sales hit because they just lost one of their biggest competitive advantages. If Dell home division gets into this then it will be bad.

Everybody knows the government isn't run by lawyers, it's run by aliens. Duh.
At first I was going to resent that, being alien by nature.
The motto of the ACLU: "A good client is one that has a case against the taxpayers in one form or another."
It is the most unAmerican group I can think of!:disgust:eek:r worse!

Many dot-com and mail-order companies in the United States currently are not required to collect taxes on purchases shipped outside the state. That's because they lack "nexus"--a physical presence or a close tie with the state where the recipient lives--which the U.S. Supreme Court has said is necessary for tax collection to be mandatory.

has this been overturned?

you already pay a huge tax on internet sales -- it's called "shipping".

once all the big boys start collecting sales tax, you can damn well bet the small fries will collect it too -- and pocket it. just like the no-speaky-de-engrish vendors at the computer shows.

So, correct me if im wrong here... If your in a state that doesn't participate, or doesn't have Sales tax, the E-Stores in those states won't charge tax, right? Or will they charge tax, according to the state that you are located in?

If they charge according to the location of the E-Store, then why not locate were there is no Tax... Many of these Hardware sales sites have little to no brick and mortor... just relocate. What an advantage... 5% tax on $100 is $5 savings... Everyone else will be charging $5 tax AND shipping...

Having no sales tax is what has helped Ecommerce become what it is today. I'm not saying Taxes will destroy Ecommerce, but it rediculous to by off the internet if you can just buy it down the road, and not have to pay shipping now...

We need a list of the stores that have started charging tax and also the name of the stores that will be doing this in the future.
