Here's the gist... I live on the 3rd floor of an apt. in the back of the building and we occasionally put our dog on the porch on nice days. She has a house and water outside. The first thing we did was put her upto the bars to make sure she couldn't fall out. She was too fat to fit through the bars, so we thought it would be fine. We've had her outside on nice days for months now, for around 3-5 hours each time and she's fine...

Today I came home and found my dog laying on the front stairs of my apt. building. I thought my GF took her outside and the dog decided to run so my GF went inside and was waiting on the dog to return. Then brownie (the dog) stood up and she wasn't moving one leg, so I made her walk the 3 flights up stairs to make sure she could still walk. But she refused to move her back leg at all.

Come to find out my GF let her out on the porch around 11, and I came home at 1. So she seemed to have lept off our 3rd floor balcony, but we don't know how... She's too short and cannot jump over, but too fat to go through the bars. She then walked around to the front of the building on 3 legg, where she layed there and waited for me.

Well to finish up... The Vet just called and said she had 1 leg out of socket and torn the ligament on the other leg. They set the leg back but she may need surgery :(

Today has not been a very good day at all :(

EDIT:
After talking to 2 Vets, that has seen brownie. We have decided that the best thing to do it to put her down :( She was looking at $3000 worth of surgery within the next year or so ($1100 of that would have to be done asap) and she would never be the same afterwards. She whould probably be in pain for a long time, and I don't want to see my dog in pain.

Have I made a good decision? What upset me the most, was I could tell by the way one of the Vets was acting he thought I was making a big mistake, and it seemed like he got pissed off at me when I decided I didn't want to put my dog through this.

She's a pomeranian (well mixed pom.) so she's no more than 12 inches tall and the rail is about 4 and a half ft tall (guessing here) she cannot jump very high at all

animals are resourceful...my aunts parakeets would constantly get out and it turned out one of them figured out a way to open the door to the cage and would hold it open so the others could all get out

hope the dogg gets better, i love doggs, hence the name hehe, but i am wondering how she "jumped" home no fowl play, like your landlord not liking the dog, and coming in with his key. But i doubt that happened, hope everything turns out ok

I'm sorry about that. Is it possible she crawled under the railing, or jumped up on something?

the rail is fairly small too... and you remember her big cage (kennel) it's about 3 ft tall and that is the only thing that she could have jumped on (although she never has been able to before)

Did she have a bungie? that woulda been a sight! You should ask your neighbors if they caught it on film by chance.

How big is your porch? Tie the dog up to something anchored at the wall so he/she can't get far enough to go over/through the railing.

Hope your dog gets better soon.
Don't under estimate the physical capabilities of your dog. We have a pekingese-(short stubby legs) and 95% of the time he acts like a baby as if he cannot possibly jump up or down from the sofa etc.... However, if he is motivated (sees a female dog) he will leap to or from almost any height.

Same thing happen to my dog. Jumped over a 6 foot fence, hit by a car....I came rushing over when i received the call. I picked him up....and that moment i felt the transition between life and death...its weird...because when you are that close you can feel it slipping away....and i held him until his body grew cold.

I never thought the dog could jump that high....i was wrong.

That's what I thought about doing... after it happened.

Well, before you consider tying her up on the porch, you will want to make sure she can't jump after being tied up. You think you are upset now... wait until you come home and find your dog hanging off the porch by its collar.

There can be no wrong in wanting to spare a pet pain. Perhaps the vet was upset because he felt that given time, she could have healed?

Ya gotta do what you gotta do dude. I LOVE dogs with a passion, but I wouldn't want them to be in pain for the rest of their lives just because we wanted to have them around a little longer. Plus $3000 is a big chunk of change that not a lot of people have laying around. As much as I love my dog, I don't think I would take out a loan to pay for her vet bills especially if she was going to be in pain for the rest of her life anyway.

When I was a kid, we had a family dog, Lady, that was a heinz 57 breed (a little bit of everything). She was a great dog, but she suffered from terrible knee problems. My parents paid thousands of dollars for knee surgeries, but she was always in some amount of pain. Somedays it would be really bad and my parents would need to give her pain killer just so she could walk around. When she sat down, she would sit with her hind legs stuck straight out because she couldn't bend them enough to sit.

It's a terrible decision to make, but I think in the long run, you probably made the right choice. The vet can easily get mad, but he isn't the one paying $3k for a surgery that is still going to leave your dog in pain. Most vets make a lot of money, but most of us don't. It's an easy decision for him to make....

sucks you had to put her down...I'd probably have to do the same if something serious happened to my dog.

I'm sure all vets have a rough spot in their heart for owners who are forced to put a pet down, but they probably are jaded to the fact that there's a real cost to animal care - for some, it's either pay rent, or save your pet.

Your dog would never have been the same after surgery, and she would have been in much pain for the duration of her life. I think you made the right decision, and I'm sure your dog is happy, wherever she is.

We're all here for you; I don't know how hard it is to lose a pet, but with an 9-year-old dog at my parents' house it pains me to even think about it.

I'm really sorry man...
She was a good dog.

The vet was probably pissed that he didn't get the $3k he would have if you'd done the surgery.

That sucks. :( I think you made the right decision, based on what you've been told. My parents and I had a similar situation with our oldest cat, but it worked out a lot better in the end. He had slipped while jumping on to something and torn a bunch of ligaments in his knee. The vet said that it would be at least $800 for surgery in order to repair them, they didn't know if it would make a difference, and that the cat might not survive anesthesia (he was 17+ years old at the time).

We ended up taking him home and keeping him confined for a few days so he couldn't move around and injure himself further. In the end, he appears to have healed on his own, since he now walks with a barely perceptible limp and doesn't have much trouble jumping or climbing. He's now about 20 years old and in great shape for his age. :D

Sorry to hear that man, but I agree, you did the right thing as hard as it was. Forget about the vet, it isn't his place to sway you one way or the other he should give you the facts and keep his emotions out. Anyway I still remember when my overgrown Maltese, Reggie (8 pound maltese is rather large), got hit by a car and I found him dead. That is one of the few times in my teen/adult life when I cried. Still miss him and that was probably 11-12 years ago. Hopefully you can find a new dog not to replace the old one but to just have fun with.

I think you are making the right decision. Putting animals through pain is tough, expeically on-going pain and surgury. Also, high medical costs are a burden on anyone.
