Nobody read my links. They both mention the fly-by-wire system as the result of the crash. :p

Oh well, lots of good info on the plane on those pages if you care to read it.

Why do they make them?

Because maybe the country wants to learn something and not just buy it in. It 'might' not be the best but at least the country/ company learnt something. And from this they can improve and have their own technology on it.

I read the report back in the day, and IIRC there was something wrong with the fly-by-wire system. The pilot thought it was off, and was landing manually. But the fly-by-wire stepped in as he was approaching, and tried to get more altitude... pilot made a counter move (split second reaction time/ didn't know what was happening)... and the result we can see in the video.
So, not entirely pilots fault.

Yeah, thats it.

The Viggen and the Drakken were also cool-looking planes.

BTW, I love the Swedish AF emblem, looks like a smilie... :)

Definitely a cool looking aircraft. I loved the European car commercials with the low level passes in them.

It always reminded me of the Dassault Rafale and the Eurofighter Typhoon, for obvious reasons.
