Saab Gripen fighter prototype crashes on maiden flight

That was UGLY. Link on the page says "Aircraft Crash 82" and calls it the very first Grippen prototype, so maybe this was filmed back in 1982.

Why do Europeans continue to build their terrible fighters. If they were smart, they would license the SUs and MiGs from Russia like the Chinese.

The Mirage 2000 is a great little fighter. It doesn't have the range or the speed of an A-15 or Mig-29/Su-33, but in a knife fight it is more maneuverable and a very tought opponent.

And its a whole lot cheaper.

And about the Grippen: Its out of its infancy now and is in service. The Czech air force flies a squadron of them, I think. Its not a bad plane.

if ur spending money on planes u'll never use, might as well spend it at home.

There have been one or two Gripen crashes, but not recently I think. It is a rather economical multirole fighter aircraft, and a number of countries have decided to lease/buy Gripens instead of other European and American alternatives.
Hungary, Czech republic, South Africa for example. Brazil is being courted, and Pakistan and Thailand have shown interest (Thailand wanted to pay in chickens or something like that)

And excuse me but license dusty old MiGs? What Chinese or Russian fighter would be a better alternative than the Gripen? Technologically and economically.

You are a real TOOL just like the username says.

There´s been 3 Gripen crashes, all of them becouse of pilot errors, including this. It´s actually a great plane and the most advanced fighter jet in service (until F22 and Eurofighter comes in service).

I think this video is around 15 years old..

I like to think of it as truth in advertising.

Hahahaha, well I have to say that it was the geeks that destroyed that plane. It has a computerized fly-by-wire system and it was the software that fvcked it up.
This plane can not fly without computers. It is inherently unstable.

SOFWARE NERDS KILLED IT!

See my post. I'd say partially pilot error.

Actually it was the pilot who messed up, he was´nt used to the new plane. I actually think that pilot crashed another Gripen a few years later, so he´s responsible for 2/3 crashes.

crashes happen all the time. its called "attrition" 😉
for example a canadian pilot crashed a f18 last june or july i think..he died

so... how would you suggest the pilot gain experience if the title of this thread is correct (Saab Gripen fighter prototype crashes on maiden flight). reading

Simulator.

simulators are not the real thing. in addition, the simulation will be based just on what the engineers think will be accurate. they really have no idea about all the nuances of a new model.

Just about any modern fighter is inherently unstable. The sacrifices they make for aerodynamic performance come at the cost of having needing a computer just to keep the thing pointed straight.

I read the report back in the day, and IIRC there was something wrong with the fly-by-wire system. The pilot thought it was off, and was landing manually. But the fly-by-wire stepped in as he was approaching, and tried to get more altitude... pilot made a counter move (split second reaction time/ didn't know what was happening)... and the result we can see in the video.
So, not entirely pilots fault.
