Following on my thread about being locked out of my new S7, I had another problem; no app. icons in Google Play, and only downloading via 4G.

So after doing research, I found my exact problem; the phone has IPv6 features that apparently only Google Play utilizes, and will work if your ISP uses IPv6 and it's enabled on the router.

Unfortunately mine doesn't, and to get around this I had to install an app. called "DNSet" which resets the phones DNS lookup to the public Google DNS severs sans ROOT. This worked perfectly. The other option is to setup a VPN.

I'm a (usually) happy Android user, but shame on you Google for putting up roadblocks to simple setup procedures. The process should have taken a few minutes, instead of the two days it took me (including the silly lockout) and having to research all this. Google no bueno.

Here's the thread from which I learned all this:

That is completely messed up.

I probably should have read up on this issue if I really want to know, but is it really Google's fault to provide a feature? Could phone manufacturer and the carrier communicate better to avoid something like this?

Yes I'm all for implementing new features, but when all the players aren't ready it should be able to be backward compatible. Oh well, live and learn.

Oh I get that. What I was saying is that in this case it looks like Google implements a feature on an app (Play Store), since everything else is working, just Play Store that doesn't. What the device does with it is out of Google's control. If the carrier/router isn't ready for the feature, it's the responsibility of the device to set it up so it falls back to the protocol that's working.

Unless you're blaming Google because of the OS (Android in general) instead of the app (Play Store), but other phones don't seem to be having the same problem. Or are they?

So the GS7 is trying to use IPv6 even though you have it disabled on your router?

Or do you have IPv6 enabled on your router but your ISP doesn't support it?

The IPV6 router (Netgear Nighthawk) options just put it into a "Connecting..." loop, and the WAN IPV6 address shows "N/A"

My ISP (Charter) says it is rolling it out this year, and that its backbone is ready - we need dual stack to the house.

There's something in an IPV6 FAQ on their site that I can't make heads nor tails of:

As part of Charter's IPv6 Trials, we have made available a Public 6RD Border Relay. If you are interested in participating in our early trials and own a device that supports 6RD use the configuration information below to begin experiencing the Next Generation Internet:

6RD Prefix= 2602:100::/32
Border Relay Address= 68.114.165.1
6RD Prefix Length= 32
IPv4 Mask Length= 0
Primary DNS Address= 2607:f428:ffff:ffff::1

Secondary DNS Address= 2607:f428:ffff:ffff::2

There's nowhere to make this or any other changes in the web interface for my cable modem (SB-6141). Does anyone know where to enter this so I could try it?

I'm using a Nighthawk X8 and I don't have ipv6 enabled. I have no issues with our S7 edges.

Are you sure the Play Store downloads via WiFi and not 4G?

My mobile data use is miniscule on average. I also use internet speed meter which tracks my data usage vs wifi etc, tracks it all. I'll test it right now. Yep, ISM says its going thru wifi. Just installed jetpack, watching the 83mb install grow under wifi in ISM.

Hmmm. According to the thread in the first post that shouldn't be possible, and you're not using a VPN?

It doesn't matter either way. I'm telling you, its not supposed to be this hard to get your phone to work. And I do use a vpn sometimes for ad blocking, but not a real vpn just blockthis.

I agree, but it was weird; all Internet activity worked perfectly EXCEPT the Play Store. That thread's solution worked for me, so I assume that's what was going on.

I would be remiss if I didn't update with the best solution. My router was sending out an IPv6 address on the LAN, but due to the ISP there was no WAN IPv6 address.

In my Netgear Router under IPv6 there is an option to choose auto config or DHCP for IPv6 address assignment (default DHCP), but by choosing auto config the IPv6 address is removed from the LAN, and voila; the phone works in the Play Store without the VPN app.

I think I sort of understand this. o_O

I was about to post and ask if you had IPv6 enabled on the router because I could see why that would cause an issue if your ISP does not. I think internet providers need to get /w the program and start supporting it. It is coming, it needs to change.

Google was just listening to your router that it had IPv6 support, but it really didn't.

Agreed.
