S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow of Chernobyl

One of the best games of 2007. Great game, anyone that passes it up at $5 is crazy.

I played it before it came out, but the STALKER complete 2009 mod is supposed to be excellent.

BTW, we do have a thread specifically for Steam deals.

Great deal. Very atmospheric single player fps (ignore the multiplayer game). Paid ~10 for boxed game (Gogamer).

Having fun with the new L.U.R.K. beta mod which adds stealth to the gameplay, beefs up the graphics, adds some more weapons and monsters too.

The Steam version can cause problems if you are trying to run mods created for earlier game patches.

Official Forums Link.

Play vanilla through first, then try some mods (Oblivion Lost, Stalker 2009, SMP, etc.). One exception, you might want the ZRP mod for the first playthrough as it fixes unpatched bugs, yet retains original gameplay.

AT $5 I'd grab it. It was entertaining at first but just didn't have the staying power with me. For $5 though, who cares, cheaper than a movie and lasts longer.

Though I am not into this kind of gaming, I paid for the $5 download, installed the STALKER Complete 2009 1.4 Release Mod and played it for about two hours last night.

The original game has a sickening head bob to it. The mod reduces it and you can easily further mod it to completely eliminate head bob, which I did. The mod notes tell you the three lines to edit.

The modded game does indeed have some interesting mood to it as you are basically following a sequential and branching quest through the neighborhoods and surroundings of Chernobyl in the Ukraine. The mod notes that the contributors did a lot to realistically portray the environs.

The mod improves the graphics but environmental motion is still a bit iffy. I really like the mod's changing light according to the time of day.

I guess you can run and gun the game but it is more fun to play this as an exploration of a very unique and detailed world.

I would give the modded game a solid 8 out of 10. Well worth the $5 and download time.

Funny, that's how I played this game for months, off and on. Fire it up like GTA3, run around, get into some mischief, then put it down again for a while. Had to read up a bit before giving it a full play through to the various endings (btw, headshots rule). Trying mods now. Usually play part way into the story, until my character gets too strong, and the challenge is diminished.

Yeah, the LURK mod you mentioned just turns the whole of STALKER into something fierce and exciting. Stealth just turns the game into something incredible! $5 is definitely worth it just so you can get the LURK mod!

I played before all the patches and mods were out, it was so buggy I gave up on it and never went back. I may have to give it another round if things are fixed now.

So I know this game is well acclaimed and all, but I found the game kind of boring.

Presentation quality is rather poor, and I couldn't find a spec sheet to develop my character! Thought this was an RPG?

Anyhow, I got some quest from some boring dude, wandered off into the wilderness for about 5 minutes, found some dogs, fired a shot and they all ran away, wandered for another 5 minutes, found some dudes, we went to assault some dudes, I charged in for close combat (after all, I only have the pop gun you start with) and get one-shotted by some dude with a shotty and have to start over since the game doesn't feature an autosave apparently.

The game just seems clunky and frustrating, but I'd imagine I'm missing something.
