Well i found the difficulty to the average. But yeah for taking 5 years to develop it isnt a particularly good game, the annoyance of having to go all the way back to camp for a reward as the OP mentioned, the irritation of when you kill 1 faction member the whole fricking faction goes crazy and shoots you on sight and theres no way to get friendly with them again. Also the anomalies are pretty lame, they all look samey, and generally do the same thing, hurt you...

STALKER is an average game... its not spectacular, those that think it is, well.... give me some of whatever your smoking and i may agree with you. Those that hate it are usually pretty justified. I mean come on... 5 years for this?? How long was oblivion in development for? Im pretty sure it wasent more than 5 years and oblivion is decent game! You can actually kill people and get away with it in oblivion.

i kinda hate that ... when you kill someone their friends get a bit annoyed and tend not to forgive you

and yeah ... they should just mail the reward to you

You haven't found the Sex anomalies yet? no wonder you hate it

yeah oblivion's telepathic guards were much more realistic ... they knew you committed a crime in the basement of a house with no one watching
... somehow ... yeah ... Fantasy IS more realistic than Sci-Fi

i finally got into this game, but i couldn't continue playing due to shitty vista programing. The 2 gig barrier has held me down. I will have to wait till sp1 to fix it.

even worse they badmouth them - because they don't 'get it' or it doesn't fit their preconceived notions of what it should be

those of us who do get it mostly liked this slightly-rough gem

This hits the nail on the head.

I think just because a game has a learning curve doesn't mean it sucks. Stick with it and don't give up. Don't whine about it.

I consider myself a run'n'gun gamer but after that initial learning curve, I really started to fall into the more realistic Counter Strike-ish gameplay of Stalker. It has its rough points but for the most part, it was an enjoyable game.

If you don't like it after a few successful missions, maybe the game isn't for you.

The game is good: design, story, setting. But the bugs... OMG don't they have any QA people?

What difficulty? I'll admit that on the two hardest the AI cheats ridiculously at points, but on Stalker difficulty or easier there shouldn't be any problems. The first bandit killing mission is very easy.

To be honest I don't care about realism, I just want a game to be fun. I think what the OP was trying to say is some of the game mechanics or ideas were over thought out or just down right annoying. If real life killing was ever fun then please lock me up before I do something crazy. However, if a game try's to attempt to be realistic, like HL2 and STALKER (because D3 is a stretch) then I think they should in some way incorporate a balance in the realism so that we don't forget we are playing a game.

In previous Stalker threads, I've attempted to help people who had trouble with the game, but not this one because the OPs post came across as insulting.

The game can be very difficult if your FPS is too low, make sure you are getting smooth FPS or the AI will out-shoot you in every conflict. The area past the guarded train can be difficult too, namely because there was around 25 bad guys in that area for me.

I believe there was a bug in STALKER where your difficulty changes once you get ingame, so you need to verify that it isn't on the highest setting.

killing in real life IS fun - ask any hunter :p

i think the OP doesn't "get" the game ... he is approaching STALKER as though it was a FPS - it is NOT!
-the "mechanics" are absolutely perfect for a RPG-hybrid.

How can you hurt a poor defenseless creature? Joking ;)

I'm actually in the mood to test out my new video card tonight and drivers (and drivers for sound) with STALKER. Since the main reason why I stopped playing STALKER in the first place was because it was a little choppy and had a few (little)bugs in it.

I played it for 1 or 2 hours. Hated it almost as much as I hated EVE Online. Gave it away immediately.

I second the OP's opinion.
This game is a POS.
I gave up after a couple of hours of trying.
Maybe I'm a sheer FPS guy?

RPG my ass. The only thing "RPG" about it was the lame, unengaging quests, the monotonous dialog and the inventory-trade system. At best, RPG-like by the loosest of definitions. Does it even have a...let's say a skill system? Nope.

LOL @ OP. Even though I don't really agree with it, it's funny nonetheless.

I do agree it lacks the polish you'd expect from a game in development for so long, but it is not a bad game. If anything, it is a good game.

Most of it is hidden - except for the "quests", dialogs choice and trade.

You choose you skill set by your actions - 'Stealth' worked very well for my Nameless One ... just as you choose your comrades and alignment - you also get a different ending based on your choices; Plus you gain skill by using a particular weapon and i also believe your "hit or miss" IS chosen by 10-sided dice.

If you cared to notice, you DO "level-up" and the very same weapons you couldn't hit the broad-side of a barn with formerly, now become deadly accurate; not to mention there are weapons and suit upgrades.

STALKER is very RPG

You guys make me want to try this game badly... But sadly, a few things keep me from it...

1) No AA? Thumbs Down!
2) Runs crap on anything except a C2D?
3) Dark all the time? I hate dark games...

Yep, that sums it up... Hey, if I am wrong, correct me! I want a real game to play and it sounds like fun... But those things hold me back.

1) ... well it DOES "blurr" the edges with no performance hit. And there are few edges that really need it ... most of the time you are running from bullets or mutants or the army.
2) Nope, ran great on my Py 3.4EE @3.74Ghz and x1950p
3) Dark at night ... bright as day ... in daytime :p

1) Could be, I dunno
2) Not sure about that. Has a lot of loading that causes hiccups though
3) It's not dark all the time. It has Day and Night.

Damn you Apop!, trying to make me go broke?

Hmmm... Well, it is good to know that it ran good on your P4EE... My only worry then is the lack of AA... Seriously, that scares teh crap out of me especially since my display is large and is low resolution... Jaggies for the lose :-(
