1. The first mission? Supposed to be easy. Yeah, just need to kill bandits entrenched in buildings. Except each of them can waste you in just 2 hits. And there are 7 of them. You do get helpers though, but they go down quickly, as expected.

2. Any hostile enemy with guns has a special ability: Godlike aiming while running, and actually do that at any distance they want! While...

3. Every gun you use has a special property: Can't hit shit with it. The iron sights option is just to mock you at your face.

4. Enemies that actually spawn camp next to you when changing levels, as expected, with zero chance of survival. Nice gameplay there, devs.

5. You can actually fail "completed" quests if you don't collect the reward. To make it even more "realistic", you just need to run all the back to your starting camp for the reward from your current location, just 3km away.

6. Did I said there are soldiers waiting to aimbot you just outside your starting camp even before you begin your walk to the first mission with a pea shooter?

I found the game anywhere from easy to hard ,depending on the area, but all areas can be completed if you think things through and have the right gear etc...

As to the starting area mission,I used cover with helpers as backup and saved often.

Btw the sniper rifles you get later in the game really help a lot.

Another tip use your binoculars, zoom is handy to locate possible enemies etc..you can avoid some fighting that way, patrols I wait until they are far enough from me when I first started the game.

Dude,
this game was not meant to be just another run-and-gun type. It's a mix of shooter/strategy/rpg, thus the diff. way of doing things.

Yes, I suck. I can actually hit stuff when I run'n'gun compared to standing still shooting at fvcking stationary targets at the same fvcking range. But wait, isn't this game supposed to be realistic?

Same here. Some of the levels seemed to be a lot more difficult than others, it just takes a wee bit more patience and thinking, and I for one appreciate that. It mixes things up. I applaud the devs for NOT creating just a plain old 'run and gun' game.....

Yeah.. Most gamers can hit stuff when they run'n'gun, and such games are usually quite simple and mindless. But that's the way they are intended to be.

This game is not a "run'n'gun" game. It's like buying a Doom game and looking for cover during every fire-fight.... Just isn't made to be played that way man.

You will struggle throughout this entire game until you learn to take the fire-fights slower and behind cover, crouching, leaning, and using your head.

The first few hours of the game require you to sneak and infiltrate to be effective. Once you get the good AK things work a little better for you. Even on the patched game line up your shots with the sight but not the scope. For some reason I was more accurate with the sight than the scope, others had the same problem.

Try to get the the freedom base, If you still hate the game then then sell it.

STALKER is a RPG ... not FPS although it is *disguised* as such
[i can "sense" the 10 sided dice clicking in the background - as you "miss" ... "miss" .. "miss" .. as you gain "experience" and [secretly] 'level-up' .. it becomes: 'miss' ... 'hit' ... 'hit' ... 'hit'

You are a weak drunk rookie with a crap gun you don't remember how to shoot well ... but you can SNEAK pretty well and even use you knife pretty well ...

Hang in there ... STALKER is an awesome game ... but like a traditional RPG-type game it is hard as hell in the beginning - IF you treat it like FPS
[don't]

even worse they badmouth them - because they don't 'get it' or it doesn't fit their preconceived notions of what it should be

those of us who do get it mostly liked this slightly-rough gem

All bases have been covered: you don't get it. This is not a run/gun FPS, it is an RPG-FPS. I knew that from the start, and having played Deus Ex, Morrowind, Oblivion and System Shock, I had no problem getting by.

Not going to waste my time and tell you how good it is, you got to give it time. You aren't the first to make the EXACT same complaints. This game just isn't for you.

Vanilla Stalker is kind of lame, try a modded version of it like Faiakes (usually makes it really easy), Stalker Redux (makes it a lot more realistic/harder), or download the Stalker data file unpacking utility and mod the files yourself.

The bugs are what kills the game for me.
Even patched there are still quite a few.
One I experienced is where you are supposed to go talk to the bartender.
I went, he was too far behind the bar and I couldn't get it to let me target him to talk.
Tried everything, had to reload and play the area all over till he was in the right spot.

You can just save at the counter and reload that save, he has a path he walks in, but sometimes he stays in the back of the bar too long.

The Bartender uses the games ghetto AI detection, so you can make noise or jump around and he should walk over to you.

Stalker is a fantastic game. Perhaps you missed the million posts about it being difficult at first?

That's a shame, as I absolutely loved STALKER, enough that I played through it several times to get the good endings. Right now, i'm just playing around with Duty and Freedom. Granted, the game came out way too early, as I was getting CTD's every hour until the first patch came out which apparently ATI cards suffered from the most. After tweaking the ini file and using the Float32 mod, the game is great otherwise.

The one thing I would like to see added to the game is co-op, as this is the perfect world to do it in with various missions. I think they really dropped the ball not having that in the game.

I just walk up to the bar and wait 5 seconds or so. He will walk over to you. Has never failed.

I played this game on hard on the first try, and yes, sometimes it was frustrating and difficult, but the game was a blast, very immersive. I was constantly short on ammo (on hard, they don't give you shit) so I had to use more clever tactics until I reached the Bar.
