Qualcomm today unveiled the first 10nm server CPU/SoC called the 48-core Centriq 2400. If you were wondering when the first no-compromise ARM server chip would be out in the wild, now you have an answer

Not all cores are created equal, though. Cavium's ThunderX2 will have 48 cores, too, on 14LPP, but that doesn't say much.

No-one sane thinks the second chip is going to be a home run in the server market. The market cares about the "little things", and it will take a few chip generations of development until the CPUs can be competent. A lot of the entrants in the ARM server segment can be dismissed simply because they are only funded to ship one or two attempts, and once those fail, and they will fail, they will go belly-up.

Qualcomm is different in the way that Qualcomm is huge (10x AMD, 60% of Intel), and their own servers are a significant market. If they start using their own chips, they can possibly pay for the necessary R&D for the few generations that are needed without no-one in the organization batting an eye.

My prediction is that this chip won't be anything special, but that if QC keeps at it, they are entirely capable of becoming a player in this space.

Seriously, Qualcomm isn't in the two phones that make all the profit in mobile (iPhone and top of line Samsungs). How do they survive?

Qualcomm most definitely is in the iPhone, they make the modem in most models.

The phone ODM's are the ones losing money, not the makers of the silicon.

Well, the only real ODM in phones is Samsung - they are having a bad year (made worse by the Note7 fiasco).
