Ryzen 5800X $299.99 @MC

I bought my 5800X when it more or less came out (at MSRP 🙁), but angling to possibly upgrade it with the upcoming 5800X3D, depending on its' price...

What cooling did you guys go with, and what are the OOB temps like? I don't have anything beefier than a Noctua U12 at the moment. Will that be enough for plug and play, or do I need to do some UEFI tweaking? Thanks for any info.

It's only 105W supposedly, so I just went with an AMD Wraith cooler I had from another CPU (they do not give you a heatsink/fan on these CPUs). It works fine for the most part, except for a particular oddity. I had a kubuntu 20.04 desktop built with another CPU (probably a 5600X), and dropped the 5800X into it later. Now in some instances, like updating the kernel where it needs to compile something, it goes to 100% usage for a short time (2-3 seconds), and the temperature shoots up to 70-80C, after which it just cools off relatively fast (10-15 seconds). I noticed this with some other applications (like starting NetBeans), not sure how to get rid of this behavior other than to rebuild the system (which I will do in April/May anyway with kubuntu 22.04). I have not seen this behavior when the CPU was powering a Windows box. I don't think putting a beefier HSF will help with this particular issue - the CPU gets too hot too fast for the heatsink to be able to prevent this. A similar setup I have running on a 5600G does not have this same issue...

Thanks, that odd high temp is the kind of info I was interested in. I recall reading users complaining about unusually high temps or hot spots? with the 5800X. I was not serious about buying one yet, so did not pay too much attention. Was curious if you two were finding it difficult to cool, or using beefy cooling, or needing to set certain voltages, or what. Some are using eco mode I think?

I guess I am just looking for the quick and dirty on it, to save time should I experience the temp issues.

I used the Noctua NH-U12S Chromax Black cooler with an extra Noctua fan for push/pull config and it's kept my temps below 73 celcius under heavy load.

Absolutely love my 5800X. I don't feel like i'll need to upgrade for a long time.

My original plan was to grab a 5800X then when they became more available upgrade to a 5900X but honestly there's been no need.

Yes a 5900X/5950X would be faster but 90% of the high-resource stuff I use my PC for is gaming @ 2k/165hz and the performance gains are very small.

I currently have a Corsair h150i 360mm AIO with 3x Noctua/Chromax black 120mm fans in "pull" mode on top of the case.

Originally I had 6x Corsair ML-120 ARGB fans in push/pull however temp-differences were small to non-existent and they made a lot more noise.

Under load its rare to top 70c using Ryzen Master auto-OC @ 4.6g all-core and 4.95g max-boost. Idle-temps are around 38c.

Why wouldn't you go with the 12600k for $250 instead? (Other than power consumption.)
I think this helped with the recent changes in AMD pricing... competition is good 😀
Or maybe a person already owns an AM4 motherboard, and wants to upgrade to a better processor.

AM4 has lasted a lot longer than the typical 2 years you get with Intel sockets.

When I built my system the "12" series Intel chips didn't exist only "11/10" and Zen 3 was a slam-dunk .... NOW I would go with a 12700k/z690 personally.
Careful, speaking the truth on this forum is not a good idea in AMD country. Now if AMD does what they always have done in the past. Slash prices on Ryzen processors. Your statement goes from true to not such a great idea with Zen 4 around the corner.

Oh knock it off...
Yup++++++++

There's already too much of that in the CPU and Overclocking forum.

We definitely don't need any of that mess in hot deals.

Except by that point it will no longer be the "now" I referred to! 😉

And what false impression leads you to believe I care what ANY fan-boy thinks? I'm only "loyal" to as much speed as the budget allows!

Competition = 100% good! 🙂

If AMD drops the price of the 5600x to $150-175 and the price of the 5800x to $200-250. That would change how people think about upgrading on a dead end AM4 platform. It would also change the perception of the media and marketplace with regards to Zen 3 vs. Alder Lake. I am speaking about the value aspect of the CPU's in the current market.

AMD owns all 5 top spots for best selling CPUs on Amazon, and 4 of the top 5 on Newegg.
Also, not as cheap as Micro Center, but B&H Photo has the 5800X for $329.99 right now for those who aren't near a MC.

I already use game pass, so the included code is a $10 value for me, making it $320+tax. Ordered it to pair with a B550 Aorus Elite I have.

@balloonshark - The reason I did not go 12600K is it would have required I buy a new board, order a LGA1700 adapter kit for one of my Noctuas ($10 after tax if I don't want to wait indefinitely for Noctua to ship it for free) and get another win10 pro license. I am not near MC so the cheapest I can get a 12600K is B&H for $280, way too close in price to the 5800x to make it better bang for buck. I think we all can agree, going DDR5 is a non starter, as it throws any sort of value right out the window.

BTW, "Reports of AM4's death have been greatly exaggerated" to paraphrase a famous quote. 5800X3D will give the platform one last hurrah. It appears to be on par with a stock 12900K for gaming, and it is possible but not probable there will be a 5900X3D too. Either way, AM4 still has some life left in it after all these years. Enough that declaring it a dead socket is premature, and almost sounds agenda driven.

Thanks. Before I posted I did a quick glance on a Tom's article comparing both and they seemed pretty even. In your case upgrading seems to make sense although I have a feeling the prices will continue to drop. I was thinking more of an apples to apples comparison where a new system was being built or CPU/MB replaced. The $50 saved on the 12600K could go towards the MB and you would have the new features it brings (whatever those are). I also agree that DDR5 is a no go for now.

I have one Intel PC (10700K) and one AMD (5600G) PC so I wasn't trying to start an AMD/Intel battle. I was genuinely curious about why someone would choose either CPU since the 12600K was also on sale. As someone who built a new system last year I'm already two gens behind so I wanted to know why someone would choose "older" tech. In my mind it would be a tough decision between the two since I like saving power (nod to the 5800X) but would want whatever new features 12th gen brought to the table. I also wouldn't be happy about not having DDR5 if I bought a 12th gen because the RAM is so darn pricey. Mentally it would be difficult to go back to an i5 since if one had an i7.

As long as there are no further issues with labor, materials, or supply chains, I agree the 5800X will see further price drops. But that's why I pulled the trigger; there are no assurances anymore. It is more than a fair price for a drop in upgrade to a system currently sporting a 3600. I have a 3700x, 5600g, and 5700g systems too. This is the last one to not have Zen 3 or 8/16 in it. I sold most my 10th gen Intel stuff. I still have a 10100f system though.

My B550 has "Intel® WiFi 6 802.11ax 2T2R & BT5 with AORUS Antenna" 2.5GbE LAN and PCIe 4.0, that's new enough for anything I do and then some, feature wise. My x570 and Z490 have the older AC+BT.

And 12th gen has turned my thinking about core count on its ear, for the first time in a long time. 12100 is trading blows with the 3600 and 10400 in gaming, and impressively close in a lot of productivity. If *cough* Larry ever ships my stuff *cough* 😛 I will have a 12th gen setup to play with.

Anyways, 5800X at $320 was too good not to jump on everything considered. I will likely still buy a 3D version later. And a 12th gen i5 is on my list too. I just have price lines they have to cross first, as I am first and foremost a budget hardware aficionado. The 5800x is a nod to not upgrading my main system for a couple of years. Tired of constantly changing parts and doing 2FA stuff every few months. 😉

*cough* a little birdie picked your stuff up, including the GPU, says they can mail it out Tues. 🙂
