It is more than a fair price for a drop in upgrade to a system currently sporting a 3600

I did this exact CPU upgrade BUT I paid $419(?) shipped shortly after release and even at that price I felt okay with it. (note I had to RMA my Aorus B450 so I snagged an ASUS ROG B550f Gaming at BB)

For awhile before I decided to sell the 3600/B450 (back from RMA) it replaced I had the systems sitting side by side with near-identical software and the 5800 was substantially "snappier".

Although I didn't swap my 3080 back to compare gaming FPS increased significantly as well. Solid upgrade for you and FAR cheaper then Alder Lake would have been.

Microcenter has a $50 off for new user coupon available at certain locations. It applies to 4 cpus 5600x, 5800x, 12700k and 12900k. (Coupon only valid for skus 195073, 195081, 326652, 326694.) While coupon supplies last.

You may be able to use a different email addy to get the coupon. This is posted on slickdeals so if you want one of these cpus I would pounce on this deal fast.

AMD Ryzen:

Ryzen 5 5600X w/cooler [microcenter.com] $239.99 > $189.99 AC

Ryzen 7 5800X [microcenter.com] $299.99 > $249.99 AC

Intel:

i7 12700K [microcenter.com] $349.99 > $299.99 AC

i9 12900K [microcenter.com] $499.99 > $449.99 AC

Edit: I started a new topic since this applies to other desirable cpus.

Man those are some sweet deals.

Finally got mine from B&H. Tried it plug in play, and that was no bueno. Damn this board is aggressive. Pumped 120W+ through it and hit almost 90c in less than 5 minutes of CPUz stress test. Best boost speed was 4.7GHz. Set PBO manually. Used ECO 65W settings, full 200MHz limit, and now it boosts to 5.05GHz and temp max was 76c.

T.I.M. needed to settle in? Left the system running and came back few hours later, it peaks at 70.1c and stays there. Kept the same fan curve I was already using. Pleased with it now.

MC has also been lowering the price on the 5950X, down to 629.99 now:

Tempting .... problem is that 95% of the CPU-intensive stuff I do is gaming and in most games the performance gains would be very small over the 5800x.... certainly not worth $600+.

Yeah, I would probably pay that for the 5950X3D though :D (which probably won't exist, let alone the 5900X3D)

You can take it one step further. The 5600X is not that much slower than the 5800x in gaming. In the old days. You could shave $50 here and there and here and there. Then put the budget shavings $$$ towards a way better video card where the Perf really matters. But that is not the case today.

I would get the 5800X at a Micro center with that coupon. In a few years. The 8c / 16t should make a difference. BUT the 5600x will save you even more over the 5950.
